Annual Beginning-of-Off-Season Reminder: Don’t Believe a Word Ainge says

The team was the way it was to start the season because 1) DA is telling the truth and they were expecting "almost guy" to be here or 2) They actually thought they were going to win something even without "almost guy". It was not designed to lose games nor was it capable of being a bottom feeder.

It does not matter which one is true, in either case it was a failure/whiff and we were left in an undesirable position that cause the pivot. I'm at least glad Ainge didn't try to say the plan was to do 50/50 the whole time or that we were trying to squeeze the most trade value out of assets. He came clean to it being a whiff.

I was told who the "almost" guy was and almost everyone would have hated it, but it would have made the team a lot better for not much of a price.

I think you can probably infer who it is from that.

I think this makes sense for TJ's mystery man, but Ainge's "almost guy" is probably a different person and I don't think it's him.

It’s funny that whatever Ainge would’ve said in his presser, some folks would be here saying “Ainge was being dishonest”, “Ainge said nothing”, “Ainge doesn’t have a plan“, or similar nonsense.

There was at least one tell Ainge wasn’t being honest in his presser: he mentioned that Garnett fell into his lap when he didn’t get Durant. In a previous history of that championship team, Ainge himself outlined the four year plan that he had in place to get KG.

Before the trade deadline he said Collins wasn’t learning schemes and needed to be traded, now, he’s an example of work ethic that he’s so glad is around. Before the trade deadline, Lauri was “available.” Now, it’s evident that he’s been informed and understanding of the tank from the beginning and he and the org plan a long-term career in Utah. Ainge says he doesn’t have a plan in the first half of the press conference, in the second half he refers to the plan.

The guy knows what he’s doing but you should never, ever trust what he’s saying. Actions say: he keeps appearing in places to watch Cooper Flagg. Ainge says: We’re not tanking, we’re big game hunting if we feel we’re ready. (He does not feel we are ready.)

The one thing I trust: the plan, essentially, is to build a full roster that’s a superstar away, then trade for that superstar.
I don’t know why, but these types of threads really piss me off just shows the stupidity of the OP as if he sits in meetings for the front office of the Utah Jazz like he knows what’s going on

Just to make sure: what is the history of deals where a small market team without an established multiple All-Star received a superstar via trade?

I went through the list of top 50 scorers in the NBA looking for realistic trade candidates. It is slim pickings, guys.

- DeMar Derozan
- Cam Thomas
- Kyle Kuzma
- KAT (IF Minnesota flames out in the playoffs)
- Miles Bridges
- Brandon Ingram
- CJ McCollum
- Terry Rozier
- Mikal Bridges
- Devin Vassell
- Nikola Vucevic

Any takers?

Give me some Devin Vassell.

OK, and then what? We will have to spend a good chunk of our draft capital on him. Do you think that the team with Lauri and Vassell would become a magnet for unhappy superstars? Or maybe this duo will turn us into contenders on our own? Or, that we will miraculously hit on drafting a superstar with what is left of our picks?

I was trying to be funny.

What is he supposed to say? "Yeah we are going into net year tanking" Honestly think a Lauri, Sexton, JC, Collins dump is bound to happen so we bottom out for the stacked drafts of 25 and 26 and then have the most draft assests in the history of the nba. That seems like the most likely route they take things to me.

We are not yet at the point where we know who could be had. We need to see who falls short in the playoffs.

Last 2 seasons we've seen these (near) all-star level guys traded (offseason/midseason):
- Dame
- Jrue
- Porzingis
- Harden
- Siakam
- Durant
- Beal
- Don
- Rudy
+ a bunch of players who are still better than most of those you listed (plus few solid FAs like Brunson and FVV).

Lets not pretend this offseason wont see any names out there bigger than those guys.

OK, and how many players from this list were traded to struggling teams with no all-stars? An injury-tarnished Porzingis to Washington and that's it. This is our realistic type of acquisition based on the actual recent trades.

I guess my main point is that we cannot skip steps and, as a small market team, miraculously acquire a star with our middling pick or as a FA. We need first to find a star by drafting. THEN it could be realistic to find another through trades. And no, Lauri is not great enough to entice other stars to join him. He is a star mostly in the Jazz fans imagination then in reality. He is a one-time All-Star who did not make it this year and probably will not make it the next year either.

We need to get as many draft picks as possible and draft, draft, draft until we have a real, big time star. This is the first step that we simply cannot skip. It may take several years.

How often do struggling teams with no all stars sign up for such bidding wars?

Stop being silly. The seller takes the best bid. Our money doesnt smell any worse.

You can skip steps when you have a billion assets
