    Libyagate

Two State Department officials confirmed late Tuesday that there were no signs of unrest near the Libyan embassy prior to the Sept. 11 attack that killed ambassador Christopher Stevens, flatly contradicting weeks of claims by Obama administration officials just a day before a major Congressional hearing on the matter.

    Obama on September 12:
Of course, yesterday was already a painful day for our nation as we marked the solemn memory of the 9/11 attacks. We mourned with the families who were lost on that day. I visited the graves of troops who made the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq and Afghanistan at the hallowed grounds of Arlington Cemetery, and had the opportunity to say thank you and visit some of our wounded warriors at Walter Reed. And then last night, we learned the news of this attack in Benghazi.

As Americans, let us never, ever forget that our freedom is only sustained because there are people who are willing to fight for it, to stand up for it, and in some cases, lay down their lives for it. Our country is only as strong as the character of our people and the service of those both civilian and military who represent us around the globe.

No acts of terror will ever shake the resolve of this great nation, alter that character, or eclipse the light of the values that we stand for. Today we mourn four more Americans who represent the very best of the United States of America. We will not waver in our commitment to see that justice is done for this terrible act. And make no mistake, justice will be done.
He called the murder of the ambassador and 3 others in Benghazi a terrible act...not a terrorist act, and blamed these acts on protests that never happened for weeks. Then he claims to be offended by the charge that he misled the American people. He left these people vulnerable in Libya and misled the American people about the circumstances surrounding it, and let Hillary take the blame and he is offended?

You are absolutely correct. He never said "terrorist act", he just said "acts of terror". I think the size of that difference is cojmpletely clear to everyone, and I appreciate you pointing that out.

He talked about acts of terror is regards to 9/11 2001.

He specifically called Benghazi just a terrible act.

At the beginning of his remarks he avoided the word terror in regards to Benghazi and blamed the attacks on a protest that never happened:
The United States condemns in the strongest terms this outrageous and shocking attack. We’re working with the government of Libya to secure our diplomats. I’ve also directed my administration to increase our security at diplomatic posts around the world. And make no mistake, we will work with the Libyan government to bring to justice the killers who attacked our people.

Since our founding, the United States has been a nation that respects all faiths. We reject all efforts to denigrate the religious beliefs of others. But there is absolutely no justification to this type of senseless violence. None. The world must stand together to unequivocally reject these brutal acts.

Hmmm...I wonder why Obama would lie during a reelection campaign with a foreign policy disaster on his hands.

LOL - it's nice to see the "you didn't build that" crowd is now suddenly interested in context and nuance.

I still say that Obama wasted a perfectly "good crises" as Hillary would put it. He could have gotten alot of wind at his back if he had come out strong on this and did some grandstanding.

That's one very particular way to look at this situation.

I'm not talking cover up and all that (even though I think he fumbled that as well).

I am talking straight up political gain from it. Obama could have gotten alot of people behind him and he blew it. If he had handled it right he would have buried Romney hard.

Obama spokeswoman Susan Rice (ambassador to UN) :

It was a spontaneous, not premeditated, response to what had transpired in Cairo. In Cairo, as you know, a few hours earlier there was a violent protest that was undertaken in reaction to this very offensive video that was disseminated. We believe that folks in Benghazi, a small number of people, came to the embassy to -- or to the consulate, rather, to -- replicate this sort of challenge that was posed in Cairo. And then as that unfolded, it seems to have been "hijacked," let us say, uh, by some individual clusters of extremists who came with heavier weapons. Weapons that, as you know, in the wake of the revolution in Libya are quite common and accessible. And it then evolved from there.

Consulate Security in Libya was a Casualty of the Liberal Worldview

NORDSTROM: Our long-term security plan in Libya was to deploy an armed, locally hired Libyan body guard unit. Due to Libyan political sensitivities, armed private security companies were not allowed to operate in Libya. That was the case under Khadafy and that was the case under the free Libya.

RUSH: So we simply said, "Okay, cool, we're not allowed to have any armed American personnel protecting our ambassador at our consulate? Cool. We understand that. We'll hire one of your people. We'll hire a bodyguard for the ambassador." And that's what they did. And you know the story now, don't you? There was a safe house. This is part of the plan. If ever there is a threat or some unrest aimed at people in our consulate, there's a safe house location. There's an escape route, escape plan, and you take all the important personnel at the embassy or consulate to the safe house, which happened. The problem is that this bodyguard that we hired told the mob where they took the ambassador.

The Libyan bodyguard or series of them that we hired then told the mob how to go find the ambassador, which they did, and what they did to him was not pretty. He wasn't just killed. He was raped and tortured.

Well, what is this private security business? Why not the Marines? What are you talking about Blackwater for? Why can't you just go out and position some Marines there? It was okay for the US to send in US pilots to help Libya get rid of Khadafy. This is absurd. This is right there, one of the myriad problems, the liberal worldview. "Oh, you don't want us to have any? Oh, okay. Okay."

It is better to pretend that terrorists are peace loving Muslim protestors who turned violent for the brazillionth time trying to defend their prophet.
