Why doesn't infraction lead to decreased Rep power?

LOL.. all the guys who are saying "we don't care about neg reps" have like rep power of +15 or more..

I guess I'm trying to raise this issue for those new posters who've just joined & it can really break their spirit sometimes getting neg rep -20 from a bully who had multiple infractions but still had their Rep Power intact.

But who cares about new posters anyway...

Well as mentioned here by other posters as well, Cy used to do it to me and other posters here all the time.

But I've tried to stay clear of him and hadn't had a neg rep from him for a while (he's never pos rep me by the way).

I can't say whether or not he's doing it new posters though.. as you guys are now BFF may be you could ask him for me?

Also that's just 1 guy I had a run-in with, I have no idea who else is out there.

I'm not being a jerk, just suggesting that Cy, as the only known example of the author of this thread, that hasn't had one by Cy in some time, maybe should have made things a bit more clear. I think it's all overblown.

You see - Rep power is all they have over all the other posters. One of the things I don't like is members with high Rep count neg-repping new posters just as a bullying tactic. Nobody wants to stand up or say bad things about these guys because they're afraid of getting neg-repped.

What I would do is straight away decrease Rep power by say 5. I'm pretty sure they'll stop what they were doing before and start acting like civilized people.

If the measure is there to keep people's stupid behavior in tact then you have to find the best way of doing it so that these guys don't re-offend.


I just don't get how someone can get a 1 week ban, go have a holiday, come back and bully honest-everyday-posters around just because they still have their 20+ Rep power in tact.

I think Rep power has its merits. It keeps people honest and not to do stupid things for example. I used to say a lot of stupid things and some posters here have let me know by neg-repping me which have kept in in line ever since. It's just that you start to get people who have high Rep Power acting stupid that's the issue IMO.

Rep is not the issue, it's how we can fully utilize it.

Then reduce their Rep power to 0 and see how they respond.

Rep power is all these guys have over us average posters. Take that away and I bet you, you'll see a change in attitude.

Then please explain to me why I get Neg -10 rep from Dutch everytime I utter the word "Jefferson" in a positive way?

No it's definitely not about posters with high rep. There are plenty of good posters with high rep who doesn't abuse it. All I'm saying is that if you do abuse it (high rep or not), your rep power should take a hit, simply because you have abused it.

When I was a new poster to this place Cy was definitely one of those who would just neg rep you -20 simply for messing with his mood. (I wouldn't be surprised if he'd neg rep me for this post, but who cares). I toughed it out, took it on the chin, because I enjoy 90% of the discussions I have here.

Which other new posters have Cy done this to? We'll never know. Should he be penalized for this sort of behavior? Absolutely. Why he's still walking around with 27+ Rep is beyond me.

To the Mods: not all new posters are going to report this kind of thing. It can come out as whiny and most people just don't wanna bother. (For all my time here I've never reported a neg-rep be it bully in nature or otherwise). So if you can't monitor this, I think it's pretty stupid. If you have a Rep system going, you've got to be able to monitor it. If you can't, then you've got to take it out IMO.

But how would that keep posters with high rep count from abusing their rep power? Doesn't it have to come back to Mods penalizing them eventually? I think it'll just create too much back-talking & mud slinging.

Easiest way is for Mods to look into Neg Repping Records, this should easily catch guys who Neg Rep on a regular basis, and you can then keep an eye on them. I don't think there are that many anyway that are ruining it for most of us.

I quit hating people earlier this year when I came to Christ.. he had really changed my heart and it's actually quite hard to really really HATE someone.. hard to explain that feeling, but hope you know what I mean. Most of the time I just feel sad when injustice is done to someone that's all.

If all this thread had done is bring this issue to the fore so that we can recognize the issue when it arises and report it to the Mods then I'm happy. I certainly have nothing to gain by starting this thread, it was just an idea I had from my experience, as I was once a new poster in this forum as well.

NAOS is the only poster who I repeatedly neg repped for the sake of neg repping. (That I can remember, I may have done it to Dutch and Troutbum too though (which goes against your theory that top posters only go against new posters, we frequently **** with each other, probably more so than new posters.)

Hotnickkkkkkkk, I never intentionally singled you out for neg repping onslaught, you just brought it upon yourself because 50% of your post were laughably bad and ridiculous. I probably haven't negged you in a while because A.) You got less dumb or B.) I've stopped posting/reading as much as I use to on this site.

Rep serves one purpose to me, it's funny to watch other people freak out over it. I couldn't care less if I had 0 rep tomorrow. It wouldn't change the way I posted, or the way I acted to anyone on this board. I would still neg your ass if you said something stupid, and I would rep it for funny/intelligent comments.

I do enjoy when I neg someone, and they go crying to Jazzfanz like I murdered their dog. When they neg me back it doesn't bother me at all. To be honest, NAOS had his most brilliant move by pos repping me. I don't know why, but it actually made me mad when he did it. He stopped after a while though and started negging me back and all was right with the world.

The fact that it creates this much discussion/controversy is the reason it should stay up though. It's fun. If you take it seriously, reevaluate your views on internet message boards.
