PeeK, there's an independently wealthy fellow who gives "unauthorized" tours in Monticello area & gets harassed by the wildlife cops all the time for infringing on the licensed guys who charge for what he does for free. If it's not you then you should meet him. Tons of unexcavated indian ruins in that area -- probably well over 5000.
My work sent me to pocos de caldas brazil for training and we flew into sau paulo first and then had to drive 4 hours to pocos...... i hated sau paulo. It smelled like sewage and was so crowded. I think it is like the 7 most populated city in the world. (for perspective, i believe new york is like #14)
We drove around sau paulo cause we had time to kill before our flight back home and found some very scary slums and lots of garbage and graffitti... but by far the worst part of sau paulo was the smell.
Pocos de caldas was an awesome city however. (kinda reminded me of park city utah, but in the jungle.)
No thanks to a little ring that became a local sensation.
I don't get it though. So much good wasting away in the elements. Can't pick up arrow heads any more... can't pick up a single shard out of the native version of a junk yard but you can walk over it and grind it closer to clay. Stuff out there getting ruined because we're afraid something new might pop up even though we've combed through this stuff already. Best just let it go to the next flood than let some explorers have their hands on it.
Why? Asia has most of those things you mentioned about Brazil + many things that are exclusive to there.. I've basically been nowhere in South America so far, but I know for fact you're missing out if you just obstinately dismiss Asia. But hey, we all won't get to go everywhere, so we kind of do have to reject 99% of all places out of hand as being unworthy of our time and money. And then just pretend they weren't worth visiting anyway to console ourselves. You just have to enjoy whatever you get to see. I'd love to go to Brazil in 2014 for the World Cup even though I hate soccer. Or maybe for the 2016 Olympics.
The only travel issue I ever have with people is that a lot of people just seem go to the same places. Like I'm sure Bermuda....or Disneyland....or Acapulco are all great fun for those people. But when I see that you/you're family go there year after year on your Facebook....and it's your 1 trip for the year....I question your lack of curiosity. Skip that trip, save the money if you need to, go to India the following year with your kids and their minds will be blown....guaranteed that will be the one trip that stands out for them when they are 25-30 looking back at the traveling they did with you.
This...
I have friends and family members who always talk about doing some awesome trip, but always end up going to Disneyland every year...
Now I do go to South Africa every other year(family) but in between those trips we will go other places like Hawaii, Cabo and when we do go to South Africa we try to do layovers in cool places like London and Dubai!!
