Mazda. My husband has a 1998 626 he's been commuting in for 13 years. The most expensive thing we've done on this car is a tuneup. And the interior looks amazing....every button still works. No tranny, engine, or other system problems. Tuneup, regular maintenance, spark plugs, and I think a catalytic converter is all we've done in 13 years. When he was commuting from Sandy to Provo he got nearly 40mpg too. When we replace his car we'd buy another Mazda in a heartbeat. We had a Mazda minivan that was great too but swapped it for an SUV after a few years.

I have bought about 15 cars on eBay. What I do is narrow down the cars I want, then I email them all offering a ridiculously low price, stating it's all the money I have, but I can wire the money within minutes. Someone always needs the money badly enough (and NOW) to take the bait. I've made money on every car I've bought that way..

Exactly what I didn't want, but expected, to hear.
My old man is unbelievably car-saavy. He sometime hypothesizes that cars in the 90s don't break down these days as much as they do now. In other words, finding an ol' Merc 190E with 80K miles will be indestructible in the long-run, in comparison to finding a 2001 C240 selling for $5000, with 110K. I am not sure to what extent this is true.
My family has gone through plenty of cars. We have awful history with older Audis. Fords are easy to repair, and cheap. There was a Volvo 240 somewhere in the mix that never broke. My brother's Prelude was a lemon. We have a Subaru forester with 300K on it. My brother drives a BMW 330CI.
My baby, up until now, has been the most problem-free car I think anyone in our family has ever had. The dealer always ranted and raved about how well the mid-90s C-classes were made. Not sure if you've heard the same, Mr. Eric.
So I wanna say that the Benz's are badass, but as you said, I probably just got lucky. Do you have any horror stories with Mercdes-Benz? I'd love to hear them, if possible.
I'll check out the Amanti. I'll be honest, I'm kind of a prick, and picky with things like brands and stuff. Kia is not usually my cup of tea, but I will swallow my pride and search some up. My wallet >> my pride, I know.

I've had 7 Mercedes and no problems with any of them. Not saying that means anything though..

I'm a big fan of cars from the 80's and 90's. Much simpler mechanics, less electronics, less computer control. That's why they are more reliable. My problem with the luxury imports is just the cost of repairs. I'm always blown away when I have to order parts for them. And they are a bigger pain to work on. Just my (professional) opinion. Take it for what it's worth (90$/hr.)
So when we do replace my husband's Mazda (hopefully this year...we are saving up to pay cash), we were thinking of maybe adding Volvo to the list. Maybe we should avoid those imports though. Would look for a smallish suv or midsized sedan we can fit 3 kids in. Were thinking Hyundai, Toyota, Subaru, Honda, Mazda. Any advice? Thanks.
