I'm on the record for saying before last night that I didn't except a win-- but I was hoping for a closely contested match. It's difficult having that expectation against the team with the largest home-away disparity in the NBA last season, as well as when you think about us missing our two best players & longest tenured Jazzmen.
With that said, there was something that happened last game that was super super encouraging, that I haven't really seen much with other Jazz teams.
There was 2 or 3 points last night where the Blazers were on the verge of breaking the game wide open & handing the Jazz a proper defeat-- but each time this happened, one player would stand up and bring the Jazz back into it.
The first time this happened was definitely in the first half by George Hill. That play where he jumped up and snatched the ball specifically was a time when the starters came back in for the bench, and the Blazers were flirting with a double-digit lead. He willed the Jazz back into it, with Rodney Hood obviously right there with him.
Then obviously in the second half we know what happened-- Joe drops 27 of his 29 points.

it reminds me of Game 2 in the NBA finals back in 2011, when Miami seemed to be cruising towards a victory against Dallas. For a while no one could get anything going except Shawn Marion-- who kept on hitting these buckets and kept the game *just close* enough for a late-game comeback. We really, really need performances like that from our supporting cast-- and that's what we got last night. Our team doesn't need 30 points from JJ and 20 points a night from George Hill-- but the fact that both are possible and both happened in the first night of the season bodes rather well for this Jazz team.

Boris was a tragic let-down (especially after a fairly good preseason campaign) but one game doesn't define a season. Hopefully more Lyles minutes, and less Mack minutes (dude got lost on Crabbe EVERY ****ING TIME) for next game. Go Jazz.
