Life - official thread

Im remodeling my guest bedroom and bathroom right now. After I finish that project I am going to turn my attic into a master bedroom suite. I love working on stuff and an old house has been very enjoyable. Ill try and find some before pictures. Ill have after pictures in a week or so... Ill post some during pics below.

here is a during picture after most of the tear down and after I moved the door and took out some stupid closet in the bathroom.

here is half a creepy lizard I found in the wall. I found the other front half a week later in another wall.

I also took a cement grinder and smoothed out my rough cement basement and put in my theater. I plan on tearing out the cement and digging down a few feet in the future but for now a coat of epoxy will do.

This is the bathroom sink counter I am in the middle of making. I'll put a glass bowl on it and run a faucet out of the wall. The wood is 108 year old lath boards out of the wall I took out. I am going to also make a barn style sliding door for the bathroom.

Very cool!
In my next life I want to fix up old houses!

No you don't. Whatever you think your budget would be, at least double it.

If you are paying a contractor or someone to do it I agree. I also agree it is easy to get out of hand. But if you plan ahead and are budget conscious I think it can be pretty cheap. I make a lot of my own stuff and I also get good deals on stuff I buy. I buy a lot from the Re-store and from Amazon or other online places. I do buy a lot from Home Depot or Lowes but they are after checking other places. I just bought all the tile for my bathroom from the re-store for $10. It is this really nice natural redwood looking tile. I bought paint for $5 a gallon in the mis tint section and had it re-tinted to a color I liked more. I also have a lot of friends that run paint, electrical, plumbing, and general contractors businesses that I get stuff from for free or dirt cheap as well though.

Or the other option is to have lots of money and pay someone to do the work or do it yourself and buy whatever you want. It is expensive but you get things to be how you want them and that is cool too.

I think My bathroom remodel will be under $1000 maybe closer to $500. Ill get the pricing when I am done. It is a full redo as well. I had to gut the whole room, redo all the plumbing, electrical and the heat ducts which was the biggest pain. Although I did have my plumbing redone for the house and the electrical panels and lines when I moved in. That made it much easier and you can see my basement makes it pretty easy to access plumbing, heating and electrical.

I'd honestly love to just be an apprentice for a really good contractor for a couple summers. I'd work for free just to learn.

Even if we could get it to work logistically, there's no chance my wife would let me leave her and the kids for two months at a time.

Dude. Bring them. I'll even pay you. When do you want to start? I need a guy like two weeks ago.
