What's new

Jazz Sign Ekpe Udoh

..or take a flyer on an undrafted prospect with some upside without committing any more salary for 2018.

So who do you think has potential? Undrafted players are all on summer league rosters. Most will be retained with 2-way contracts. Jazz will still sign a couple.

I realize the off-season may seem bit underwhelming. Jazz lost Hayward and their options were limited due to timing. But MITCHELL!!! There's a starting spot replacement right there. He's our DWill.

What was the main source of losses last season? INJURIES. Jazz just got three very good backups. Udoh >>> Withey. Jerebko >>> Diaw. Sefolosha is no Hayward, but Hood gets first shot at replacing perhaps 75% of Gordo's production. And look at Mitchell >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Mack.

That's the way I see the off-season. Plenty sweet in those roster additions, Sugarless.

Just did a quick cap calculation. Someone check my math!
1. Release Diaw, renounce Withey, keep the cap hold for Ingles.
2. Sign Udoh, Sefolosha and Jerebko. Jazz are at $99M (equals cap)
3. Sign Ingles. Jazz are at $111M.

wtf? no, it's $100.7 mil. How did you get that result?

edit...:
Squad (-) Diaw = $75,124,667
(+)Ingles, Sef, JJ, Udoh = $25,600,000
Total = $100,724,667

People are constantly swearing at me...
Some of my friends already started drinking at 1 pm because their hero Ekpe is gone :( :(

By the way he's not the highest paid player in europe

I've heard Lindsey say he wouldn't make moves just to make moves, so he must feel that these players will help the team win. The most recent few are at least thirty, so it's not about developing young players, though I would bet the Ingles effect is here, claiming that we can teach middle age dogs new tricks. Well, we'll see how it goes, if they can learn to score, even at 30 years old, it could get interesting.

Man, I love what Jazz are doing. Signing smart, tough guys without overpaying or signing long contracts. Udoh has played terrific this season in Euroleague, I think he will be a really really great backup big.

I was calculating the current cap situation

Current Jazz cap
Gobert- 21.2
Rubio- 14.1
Favors- 11.7
Burks- 10.6
JJ- 10.5
Exum- 5
Jingles- 4.7 (cap hold)
Mitchell- 2.6
Hood- 2.4
Bradley- 1.4
Bolomboy- 1.3

Total- 85.5

Adding in non guaranteed contracts and cap holds
Diaw- 7
Neto- 1.4
Withey- 1.4

Total- 9.8
85.5 + 9.8 = 95.3

So our current total is 95.3 and the cap is 99.

Now for the estimated contracts
Jingles- 11.6 (+6.9 from his cap hold)
Sefolosha- 5.2
Jerebko- 4.1
Udoh- 3.2

Total- 19.4

19.4 + 95.3 = 114.7 total

Now if we take that 114.7 and subtract Withey's cap hold and Diaw's non guaranteed contract (8.4 total) we come to an estimated cap total of 106.3

It's a positive way to see it, and that's always commendable. I just think that when you go into free agency your main goal has to be to address your weaknesses, specially when they're as accute as Utah's after losing their only volume scorer. And as solid as these signings can be for the bench, none of them helps in that regard. It would've been nice to see at least one of them bring some scoring punch.

As for undrafted guys (or FAs playing overseas or in the G-League), guys like Perry Ellis or Robert Carter Jr. would be low-risk high-reward players that are still quite young and have proven to be able to score and shoot the 3 in their college years as well as in SL. There's nothing to lose by signing that type of guys to partially guaranteed contracts and see if they can pan out and provide some spacing and scoring for a team that will be very much in need of it.

He wants to prove in the NBA again he was 6th pick - it's good.
He can defend - it's good.
Good contract - it's good.

We will see how it works.

This is an interesting number. It looks like a contract specifically fitted for the bi-annual exception($3,290,000.00). Which means they've decided to stay over the cap and keep the full MLE.

Trade. It's coming.

Jokes aside ... I don't see it.

Withey is an unrestricted free agent

Our situation at 4/5 is super crowded with the signings of Jerebko and Udoh. Gobert, Udoh, Bradley, Favors, Jerebko, JJ, Bolomboy, and it's reported that the Jazz have serious interest in keeping Eric Griffin. That's 6 or 7 bigs + the unresolved Diaw situation. I doubt Udoh is leaving his situation overseas to warm a bench getting no minutes. Jerebko is likely expecting minutes too. I see a trade coming. Likely involving some combination of Favors/Diaw/Bolomboy in a deal that will send a 3 or 4 back our way.

I like this pick up
