The Reason Why NFL Ratings Are Declining

Yes, the NFL has a lot of power, I guess a lot more than you think.

They can can players, they can help investigations. They can not protect players who have broken laws. They can take care of their ex players and their medical issues.I All things they don't do.

They do sweep many many serious issues under the rug to protect their brand. Money is more important to them than ethics or moral. Thank goodness for phones and social media to bring attention to some of the terrible things players are doing. The only reason they stepped up slightly with suspensions is because of public outrage.

The only reason owners are wanting to stop protests is because they are think they are losing money or going to lose money. They were on the players side earlier.

U just described most major billion dollar corporations. Lol. I'm not discussing players just the NFL. I'm arguing that they, the NFL isn't sweeping DV under the rug at all. The law didn't find Zeek guilty of anything and still got hit with a 6 game suspension, and as powerful as the NFL is it still has to contend with the NFLPA. All I'm arguing is the NFL isn't ignoring or letting offenders get away with anything when it comes to DV. I'm not arguing anything other the DV for the last time.

[tinfoil]It's all a ploy. It's not kneeling that's the problem, it's donnie contributing to a controversial, chaotic US landscape.

Why would donnie do this? He's got a buddy that used to run another american football league. Word is, he wants to bring back the XFL[/tinfoil]

Yep, I disagree with that. They are sweeping it under the rug when possible and when they are forced to deal with it they are giving out wrist slaps. 6 weeks suspension is a slap on the wrist for DV.

If you are I get arrested for DV and our employer knows about it we dont get a little 6 week suspension. We get fired. Maybe we get a second chance in society by working hard and doing things right but we dont get our old job back and especially not after 6 weeks.

Everyone doesnt deserve a second chance. Everyone especially doesnt deserve to walk back into their multi million dollar job after 6 weeks. 2nd chances are earned and take time to work your way back and that often is not getting back to where you were. A second chance means you get an opportunity to prove you can be a contributing member of society and can be forgiven. Not a silly timeout for 6 weeks and you are back to where you were no questions asked.

Yes most corporations function that way. Many corporations dont care about ethics or morals just money and I also think that is wrong. I dont operate my business that way and I expect others to not operate that way. Just because other people do it does not make it okay. I would be opposed to any business who has a known domestic violence offender that they just gave a 6 week suspension to and then let them come back.

Would you still do business with a person directly that you know was a DV offender? Would you let them be your kids teacher, your loan officer, your bartender and so on? Or would you chose to do business with someone else?

People talk about the NFL ratings going down; but ratings for many sports have had a downward trend.

TV ratings for NASCAR are in freefall - and at a much faster rate than the NFL. I don't watch NASCAR but my guess is they don't have a problem with folks kneeling during the national anthem.

For the most part cable tv is slowly dying out. And these days people watch shows when and how they want to watch it instead of during a designated time in front of a television. This includes sports. The entire ratings system will need to be re-examined.

My bet is 20 years from now it will all be about E-Sports anyway. Football, basketball & baseball will all take a back seat.

The nerds are coming.

Good call. I'm not sure I agree with your last sentiment but another major reason that ratings are down is due to alternate viewing methods.

It doesn't take a genius to recognize having your brain bashed around the inside your skull isn't optimal for health. I see a day when the NBA is the #1 sport in Amurica - NFL has too many flags, commercials, and they need to revisit their pass completion rules.

The NFL needs to do something about the concussion and brain trauma issues, period. And it needs to trickle down to all levels where the game is played. Before high school kids should no be playing full contact football period. Needlessly dangerous. It could be argued that even in high school it should be limited, but really at all levels it is nothing but destructive to the player's long-term health.

I work in an office of Trump supporters. Many have been involved in a football pool for several years. I never heard talk of the boycott until Trump waded into the fray, but now many of them have stopped watching the games. Most are still involved in the pool, though some have dropped it.

My sister, brother-in-law and nephew also stopped watching the NFL after Trump's involvement.

So apparently all these Trump supporters do not hold strong enough convictions about the NFL players' boycott to have stopped watching games because of it previously, but they now do because Trump told them to do so. Crazy.

I personally watch few games because I don't find them that entertaining anymore. I watch more college football. I will watch Tom Brady, but I don't get a lot of Patriot games.

Let me preface this by saying I didn't vote for Trump. I did stop watching the NFL even the Superbowl. He had every right to do it, but I had every right to stop watching due to my disgust for his actions. So let's not pretend that everyone just blindly followed the President's lead here and stopped watching after his comments. I am sure there are many more out there that gave it up when I did too.

I do enjoy watching competitive fighting games. Professional Street Fighter is crazy.

eSports are just what they sound like, electronic sports. This is already a huge thing in places like Japan, China and S. Korea. There are high end computer games that are built for teams of up to 4 or 6 compete in video games. Real Time Strategy (like StarCraft 2), first person team shooters (Like Call of Duty or Overwatch) and sports games (Fifa) are three popular genres.

They have leagues, prizes, trophies, official competitions and world rankings. North American and European teams are starting to appear along with Asian based teams in the elite rankings. It's growing and fast.

That's likely true. All I pointed out is that everyone I know who is boycotting the NFL did not start it until Trump was involved.

Is that what Hayward does?

Like everything, it goes in cycles. Football saw its high over the past decade. Basketball might see a surge now. Basketball likewise saw a golden Age in the 80s and 90s then dropped off to football in this century. Basketball will probably take over for the next decade until football recovers.

Those trying to make a big deal out of the kneeling are just trying to score political pts. No one has honestly turned off football over that stuff. Hell, 90 percent of the time You don’t even see the kneeling anyway.

Hayward is not good enough to play professionally in league of legends but he does play that game. It's like me playing basketball, in not good enough to be professional but I enjoy playing it.

Yes, no one turned it off even though about ten different people were mentioned by posters in the last handful of pages of having stopped watching and I personally know of at least two who stopped.

If not for fantasy football I would probably never watch nfl. I do love fantasy football ball though

i tried fantasy sports. never found the appeal.

also fantasay nba did never really take off.

but for some reason fantasy footbal is HUGE. never got the appeal though

Did you actually read this thread or skip to the end? This has nothing to do with scoring political points for me. I stopped watching the moment Kaepernick started kneeling and the league along with the 49ers didn't punish him. He had every right to do it. The team and League had every right to punish him for doing it on their time and breaking League rules. They didn't. I decided to punish all involved by not watching or buying anything NFL related.

I had 2 Grandfathers that fought in WWII and Great Grandfather that fought and was gassed in WWI. Any protest involving the flag disgusts me even if it is perfectly legal. Others will undoubtedly feel differently. If you want to discuss social injustice with me then do it without disrespecting the flag. You're much more likely to get me on board and listening to you. Kneeling made me immediately turn my back on you.

Exactly what rule did he break? Just curious.

Pages A62-63 of the league rulebook:

“During the National Anthem, players on the field and bench area should stand at attention, face the flag, hold helmets in their left hand, and refrain from talking. The home team should ensure that the American flag is in good condition.

It should be pointed out to players and coaches that we continue to be judged by the public in this area of respect for the flag and our country. Failure to be on the field by the start of the National Anthem result in discipline, such as fines, suspensions, and/or the forfeiture of draft choice(s) for violations of the above, including first offenses.”
