See I thought part of the beauty of esperanto was that translation was supposed to be very straight forward, lacking idioms and figures of speech. Is that not the case?

As with any language/culture, there will be some things that get added.

There's definitely very few idioms and figures of speech, but there are a few.

FOR THOSE THAT HAVE INTEREST...

Ron Mexico and I are getting a small group of people (5 so far) together for a fun Esperanto meet/talking session on December 2nd at 2:30pm.

Esperanto now has 1,464,000 people learning it on DuoLingo... given that the entire population of Esperanto speakers has been estimated in the past as 2 million, that's pretty huge!
