Deal restructuring almost never occurs. I actually can't think of one off the top of my head.
I found this little tidbit which is interesting:
Player contracts may be renegotiated beginning on the third anniversary of the signing of the contract, or the third anniversary of any subsequent extension of the contract.
A player contract may not be renegotiated from March 1 through June 30.
If a player contract is extended and renegotiated simultaneously, then the amount of the player’s salary in the first season of the extended term may decrease by no more than 40% of the player’s salary (as renegotiated) in the last season covered by the original term
So they I guess they could renegotiate Melo's deal to make around $16-17 million this year instead of $28. But honestly, I think the best chance Melo has to play with LeBron is for LeBron to go elsewhere and Melo join him in 2019.
