Jazz Free Agency Summer of 2018

Somewhat out of the box idea... would you sign Marcus Smart to play PF for us? PJ Tucker on steroids type of PF defensively who can do more on offense...(not as good shooter obviously)

I think that Favors and Exum's markets will be poor. So we may be able to bring them back and get another impact guy for MLE or less. I am hoping for Hezonja, Blejica or Rudy Gay.

Aside from him not being a 4 by any stretch (especially the type of stretch where he can’t stretch), why would he be higher on the depth chart than Crowder, Thabo, Royce, Exum, or even Allen ad Mitchell at the 4?

Because he has a much better floor game on offense than Crowder, THabo, Royce and Exum... Better defender too... at any position, including the 4 and especially in the new small NBA.

I'd sign him at the MLE and figure it out, but I'm here for what you are saying in general.

I actually think Royce can play small ball 4. He rebounds, defends, and shoots well enough. I don't fear him getting backed down in the post... like would you rather have mirotic guarding 4s or Royce. Might be a matchup or two where he is at a disadvantage (griffin, aldridge, Melo?) but most teams aren't going that route... if we retain Favs we can go big.

I don't know what we need to sign if we essentially run it back, but versatile guys would help.

Smart likely gets a bigger than MLE offer doe and I wouldn't clear space for him.

I still think our best option is to trade for Deng and Kuzma today. Let LA dream about their big 3 while we build our future contender.

We still keep Favors for two years and keep Exum long term.

Standing pat and thinking 2019 space will get us a star is foolish.

What's the trade that accomplishes this?

They won't trade Kuzma to get rid of Deng. We also don't have the space to just take him in, which is what they would want to accomplish. IF there is a big Kwahi deal and SA wants expirings and picks instead of Kuzma and Deng then we can get involved, but are a 2019 1st, Bradley, and expirings enough?

I'll take Mirotic everyday of the week over O'Neale ,not even close ,better offense and rebounding by a large margin

Just on defense was the question... I understand that Niko is a better offensive player... was more referencing the type of idea.

My fake trade of the day that I kind of actually like...

Was trades Otto porter... he waves his trade bonus.

We trade Favs (s&T) starting at 14M per year and Crowder, plus our 2019 first.

Saves them $5M gets them two players and a pick, and they can duck the tax... they get the athletic 5 Wall wants. They get a pick on top of it.

I think Porter might be good enough to put us in the convo if we get enough internal development... and yes I start him at the 4. Guy is mega efficient... in Feb without wall he upped his usage and went 19 per game while staying efficient. Dropped a sizzling 29 and 10 both times he played against GS last year.

@stitches

Burks, Bradley, 2019 lottery protected 1st for Deng. Kuzma is acquired using a trade exception. This has to be done TODAY!

Why for LA - they can't sign LBJ and PG to full max contracts right now. They have $60 and need $65 (LBJ $35 PG $30). Also, any trade involving Kawhi would need a contract heading the other way. SA won't take Deng; Burks' expiring is more attractive. Also, LBJ is notorious for not wanting to play with young players. Lonzo cant be moved so its more important to get established players than grooming Kuzma. Lastly, LA could target 2 guys this summer and then add another next year if they cant get all 3 this year. Either way, Deng is in the way. Stretching him this year costs $8 million a year for 5 years. Stretching him next year is $6 million a year for 3 years. LA goes all in for now which Magic has made clear is the priority.

Why for us - Kuzma is our PF of the future but we still could keep Favors and Exum since we have their Bird Rights. Our finances are fine the next 2 years. We can afford Deng.

I got a feeling Exum is gone. No insider info, just looking at roster spots and cap space and games played and 3pt%

Nah... even if he got full MLE (I'm not sure he will unless Orlando goes there) I think we'd match. Honestly Orlando and Phoenix may pay him, but if they don't i think he sticks around on a 2/25-30 type deal. If he gets 4/48 that is the tipping point in my mind. I think Phoenix goes for Marcus Smart, then Fred VanVleet. Their GM is worried about being fired... needs more of a proven talent.

Orlando is a real possibility because their GM loves length and athleticism... so Dante at the PG fits his preferences. They only have the MLE though, and I think we match that. I think Orlando ends up signing IT on a one year make good deal unless LA misses out on all their targets.

I don't think they have any plans on getting under the cap. Leonsis looks like a willing taxpayer for a couple years. They wouldn't taken on Austin Rivers 12m otherwise.

If we get rid of Exum it's because the Jazz don't think he has it mentally. He's already showed enough glimpses to go all in.

They got rid of Gortat in that deal and save $1M... so you are wrong. They also never paid the tax until last year... If they stay in the tax this year they will end up in the repeater tax... for a mediocre team. They will cut some salary somewhere... this deal gets them two players they can use (one at a position of need).
