Point Guards

Some of you who want DM to be a point guard need to really consider what's going to be needed of him in the coming years. I think it's fine for DM to get good at playing PG for the Jazz and having the ability to do it well, but no way you ever just stick him there permanently. He needs to score and it's what he's best at. I think developing his PG skills is great so that he can do it at times but no way you stick him there. Height wize he's undersized but Donovans arms are very long and he's very strong. He should be at the 2.

He can guard whoever the matchups dictate.. I just don't think we need to be so rigid positionally. If he is the pg it doesn't mean he is responsible for getting everybody in their spots and can't work off ball too. If you can add more size in the backcourt great. Either way DM needs to be a better playmaker.

PG isn't what it used to be... if you have CP3 then yes you have that guy handle and boss everyone around... but look at the spurs... who is functionally the pg there? It's Derozan... even though he is a "2".

I think if you list the things DM's back court partner needs to have that it lines up with a 1 or a 2...

1- Shooting
2- Defense
3- Creation/Passing Ability
4- Size would be nice

That could be Joe Ingles... Rod Hood checks some boxes... Brogdon some... Devin Booker some... Pat Beverly... Gordon Hayward... Brad Beal...

90s pgs are kinda out of style now... unless you get the Lowry, Conley, CP type and those guys check a lot of the boxes. DM has some positional variance... I think he was always a combo guard... mixing and matching how we use him is not an issue to me at all and I think long term we are just as likely to find a backcourt partner for him that is more of a SG than a PG by their traditional definitions.

Scoring point guards are a thing though. Dame, Steph, Russ, harden, etc etc.

Not the worst thing in the world for your point guard to be a scorer

Zactly... I wouldn't want a complete non-ballhandler next to DM like say JJ or Kyle Korver, but even that type of arrangement could work in short stints and would have value. Having Joe helps a lot too.

I’ve liked Naz when I’ve watched him with the Stars. NBA is a different game, but Naz seems okay to me as a backup to Neto.

As for the rest of it. I wouldn’t be surprised if Donovan is the starting PG. I don’t really like that, I think it’s added pressure on Donovan that he doesn’t need right now. I didn’t realize there were so many wanting him to run the point, but to be completely honest he’s not very good at it right now. He’s not better than Neto at it. It’s just too much to ask him to facilitate and be our offense, it’s too much and it’s unfair if you’re asking him to take you to wins over the next few weeks as your point guard and leading scorer IMO. If you’re okay with “practice making perfect” and letting him grow during this process without worrying as much about wins I think you have to decide which is more important at this stage.

If you want to make the playoffs and wins are the goal I think you have to find a way to keep Donovan away from being put in the roll of having to be PG and the leading scorer. You can’t ask all of that of him, not right now. If you’re cool letting Donovan develop his PG skills, then you have to live with the results which honestly haven’t been great when he’s ran PG during extended periods.

I’ll think at this point you roll with Neto, give Naz some time, and hope Grayson gets back to fill some minutes at the 2 as well, while giving Joe and Donovan some minor minutes at PG and hope Dante gets back in due time. The worry of course being, Neto is also someone who gets injured a lot and we’ll see how long he lasts playing extended time.

One things for certain, this is a very bad time to have injuries stacking up especially in the same positions.
I think right now you only play DM at PG if you also have Ingles on the floor... and have Ingles and DM basically alternate PG duties such as bringing the ball up the floor and initiating the offense.

Why increase Neto's minutes more than a nominal amount?

I see no downside of playing Mitchell 20+ minutes at the point.

I'll be really surprised if Quin doesn't go with a starting lineup of Mitchell/O'Neale/Ingles/Favors/Gobert, with Mitchell and Ingles basically sharing ballhandling duties.

Donovan is not a Pg. The only thing attributes he has as a Pg is his height. He had 1 assist and 7 turnovers against bucks. Another he looks so good when he gets going with his shot. The only problem is for eg he shot 8/24 against bucks. 6/12 from 3. Only 2/12 from 2. He's a sg though but I think he's going to be a streaky player in his career it all depends how his shots going on each game. He doesn't finish good enough around the basket. Unfortunately he's a 6'2 shooting guard that is streaky

but those guys dont play balls to the floor defense, watching DM45 match up against conley up close just one possession wore me out! Dude lays it all out, im firmly in the camp of not switching DM to PG

Why can’t he score if he all of a sudden jumps to pg? I think he’d score more as a pg because he’d have the ball more and stand in the corner less

Jazz aren’t hurting for a pg.

You can cross match him with whoever... most pgs struggle against bigger defenders... so against the Grizz for example put DM on Temple.

We are too shorthanded. Regardless of what position DM plays Neto will need to play 20-25 minutes. He deserves it... shooting well and can create a bit. Defensive matchups are honestly the biggest issue with him.

I’m not sure Rubio will be out a super long time... wasn’t hopping on one foot CO style... wasn’t comfortable but didn’t seem like he was dying... he just knew it was a hamstring cuz he’s been there.

We will see tomorrow... him And Thabo both going for MRIs... good news is DL had a two for one at the MRI machine... all savings will be reinvested in the program.

Rubio is going to be out until at least All-Star. You can't rush a hamstring.

Good news... basically what some of the smarter posters guessed would be the diagnosis.. hopefully no setbacks doe (like CP3)

This is good news, but let's be realistic - it would be unwise to rush Rubio back. If this says 2 weeks, I would wait at least 3. The All Star Break is 5 weeks away 2/14-2/20.

If we want the best for Rubio and the team, I almost think we need to shelve him until after the All Star Break unless he is 100% no doubt 100%. I know that seems like a long time, but his health is key for the stretch after the break. We have 16 games between now and then, but we don't need to bring him back unless we are seriously struggling.

[/ QUOTE]
For you really, it's not good news; Hypocrisy is bad.
