What's new

Mitchell won't defend Dunk contest title...

I wish he would have done it. This is still kind of a building year. I mean sure we want him ready, but our team isn’t quite there yet. The dunk contest is great publicity for him and the team. I’m a bit disappointed. Respect his reasoning, but it’s still good to promote yourself as much as you can. The Allstar voting returns should show everyone here that. He needs his name in people’s minds as often as possible.

I would rather see Joe in the 3 point shoot out. How epic would it be to have Joe out there trash talking guys and flashing his patented Aussie smirk!
I would like Joe in there too lol. If he'd be willing to do it, I almost feel like he may turn it down. He and his family usually vacation during that time. I wouldn't mind Donovan in it or the skills challenge. I know Donovan hasn't shot great from 3, but both those contests take far less preparation, and if you watch Donovan in warm up shots he rarely misses a shot. I think hed do decent as well. I would love to see Joe there though.

No one gives a **** about a mediocre dunk contest.

I'm fine with it. It would have been really fun to see him compete in the dunk contest again but I'm glad he's putting his focus on the season. Plus he won already. There's nothing left to prove for him in a dunk contest setting.

I also think he’s a better in game dunker... he has power and wows cuz he gets dunk you don’t expect with his size... not as good a trick dunker as guys like Lavine imo... not sure dm has much new he could show.

This is 100% the right choice... stay fresh for the second half.

It makes your name well known. A lot of people who knew Donovan overseas when he went knew him specifically because of the dunk contest. Publicity matters, the dunk contest matters, arguing otherwise is naive. I respect his decisions not to do it and see the reasoning, it’s an unselfish decision for sure.

Call me old school, but I’m disappointed in Mitchell not doing the contest this year. I miss the spirit of competition that was back in the day. Probably why I don’t get the same satisfaction watching sports today as in years past. Just not the same passion anymore. As a champion I’d feel a sense of pride and angst to prove I’m still the best. These qualities just aren’t traits you find in players these days. I’d be damned if I was to win something not to go back and keep my title

Your take is the opposite of old school. Old school is putting your team first which is what DM is doing. Good for DM.

What was good for Jordan and others isn’t good for Mitchell?

If we are being honest, I don't think Jordan was that impressive in dunk contests. He did the same two or three dunks the entire time.

#1 - from right of the goal he would jump, pump/shake/slightly adjust/whatever a little, then dunk

#2 - a little half windmill variation type dunk

#3 - dunk from stepping on the free throw line

Three of Donovan's dunks (off the other glass, off the side of the board alley oop over people and the Vince Carter) from last year were harder than any dunk MJ ever did.

Destroying the Thunder in game 6 was infinitely more helpful for his popularity.

Zach Lavine was part of the greatest dunk contest of all time, no one gives a **** about him. Is Aaron Gordon a big NBA name? People don't care.

A ton of the questions asked to him in other countries were in regards to the dunk contest. Yes you have to have the game to back it up beyond that, but All Star weekend and especially the dunk contest are great publicity that garners interest in you.

Not just Jordan. That's just how the dunk contest was back then. Dominiques dunks were all pretty much the same too.

This is true.
I think lavine is the best dunk contest dunket of all time. I think in a HORSE style dunk contest he could do more dunks that others couldn't duplicate and better than anyone else too. Don't think anyone could beat him.

No one cares though.

True, but I always was more impressed with Dominique because his size, power and his extended windmill. Jordan literally did the same exact thing two years in a row. And won. In today's social media world, MJ would not be MJ.

For anybody dissing Donovan from last year, I thought he did an amazing job considering it's so hard to create new ideas. His first dunk was on the first time, creative and flawless.

Hopefully, Korver or Ingles get the greenlight for participating in the 3 pt contest. However, it'll be a 50-50 chance for either of them accepting the invitation. We need some Jazz representation at least right?

100% agree. Well obviously people like it but in the grand scheme of things it's absolutely pointless. The smart thing to do is rest up and get back healthy for a championship run. That gives you more exposure than a pointless dunk contest. Like winning did **** for Jeremy Evans.

As far as Ingles I highly doubt he'd do it. He was talking about his leg being in pretty bad shape on 97.5 yesterday and how he was looking forward to getting it healthy again. Again way more important than a stupid contest.
