2019 Trade Deadline Discussion

We were murdering teams last year during this period with Rubio. Also murdered a team in the playoffs with Rubio.
We played well to end last year, but we didn't murder OKC. We squeaked by OKC because Roberson was hurt and they relied on Melo. That played right into our hands allowing us to play Favors when really he might not play that much this year against Grant and Roberson. Oh, and let's not forget Rubio wasn't there at all in the 2nd round.

Rubio is a great dude and decent player, but he isn't the difference of making us a title contender or not unless he decides to move to the bench and takes a team friendly deal.

Heard that New Orleans will prioritize keeping Randle over Mirotic and they believe they will only be able to keep one. Also said that Mirotic isnt well-liked by his teammates.
He was unpopular in Chicago too. Even though he was the one who got punched by Portis, when Mirotic said they couldn't both be on the same team and Portis had to go, the players sided with Portis. Doesn't make him sound like someone who the Jazz want in their locker room.

Latest news from Memphis is that Gasol and Conley have had a meeting with their owner and that trades are impending.

Latest news from Washington is that the Wizards do not want to get future assets and cap relief for Otto Porter. They want to continue to contend for playoffs...

With those in mind... here's my idea for a trade:

It's a bit complicated. Brace yourselves!

UTA trades 2 1st round picks, Dante Exum, Derrick Favors, Thabo Sefolosha, Ricky Rubio
UTA gets Mike Conley, Otto Porter

MEM trades Marc Gasol, Mike Conley
MEM gets 2 1st round picks from the Jazz(put whatever protection would make sense), Ian Mahinmi, Derrick Favors, Dante Exum

WAS trades Otto Porter, Ian Mahinmi
WAS gets Marc Gasol, Ricky Rubio, Thabo Sefolosha

Why for UTA: Utah replaces 2 starters by 2 players that better fit the roster. In essence this is an admission by the Jazz that they are not likely to get anyone better in free agency than those two and decision to use the capspace on those 2 players. Starting lineup of Conley-Mitchell-Ingles-Porter-Gobert gives a great balance between offense/shooting and defense.

Why for MEM: they decide to finally break up their aging duo and start over by getting a young guard in Exum, and 2 1st round picks, Derrick Favors can also be flipped for more if they decide they wouldn't want to keep him past this year

Why for WAS: The latest news is that they don't want to trade Porter for future assets and they want to continue to contend. This one gives them a better center than they've had recently and a starter at the PG while Wall returns. They also get depth at the wing in Sefolosha. All those are win now pieces. Clearing Ian Mahinmi is just welcome a bonus

Thoughts?
Actually a really interesting trade idea. I think Memphis says no, they'd need more compensation from Washington for taking on Mahinmi's contract and all reports suggest that Memphis just wants to get the owed 1st to Boston done with so I'm not sure how inclined they are to actually do a deal unless their hand is publicly forced. But even if it's forced they have no reason to swallow Mahinmi's contract without Washington giving them something like a protected 1st or a couple of 2nds. It also seems like too bold of a move for the Jazz to actually do and I have the same concerns over Conley that I have with Griffin and Love regarding his injury history.

One of the better fantasy trade deals I've seen ITT tho.

Doesn't seem like Mirotic would be good for a locker room. Gets punched in the face in Chicago and now his Pelican teammates can't stand him. No thanks

Certainly a theme there. I’m not sure if it is his attitude or the fact that he has a very punchable face.

The two targets I like the most for the Jazz are Jaylen Brown and Otto Porter Jr. I think they're both great fits but I'm not sure what we would have to give up to get them. I would say that I prefer Brown over Porter but both would be great additions as long as we don't have to give up too much to get them.

I also like Terry Rozier from Boston who is a combo guard that already has a great relationship with Mitchell since they both played at Louisville. He is very underrated since he has to play behind Kyrie and with Bostons loaded backcourt but he's extremely athletic, plays good D and can shoot the three. Big fan of his game.

We (the front office and fans) need to be honest with ourselves. I don't think we can win the title this year. I don't care if we get Beal, it's going to be hard as hell to even win a game or two off of Golden State.

So what is the best way for us to compete once hopefully GS breaks up this summer? Is it to continue to throw the same product out there or is it get an important asset now for the upcoming years at contention?

I think we need to trade a combination of the huge expirings of Rubio, Favors, and Thabo and even picks to get some piece that helps us over the long term. I don't even know who that is. Do we try to get Bridges from Charlotte? JJJ from Memphis? DSJ from Dallas? Saric or Covington from Minny? Jaylen Brown from Boston? Winslow from Miami? Russell from Brooklyn? Harris from LA?

Beal would also help over the long term, not just right now, fwiw

Beal big? I agree.

Trade Favors and/or Rubio big? 50/50.

I don't even think that has much chance.

I think if anything happens it will be similar to the Burks trade. Thabo or something.

But I don't think anything will happen tbh.

I don't see Beal as a possibility but you never know. I think we could get Porter for maybe Favors and Exum with draft picks involved. We'd have a good stretch 4 in Porter and Rubio would stay the starting PG. Utah would always have four solid three point shooters on the court rotating Porter and Crowder at the four which would open up the lane for Mitchell.

Rubio - Neto
Mitchell - Korver
Ingles - Sefalosha
Porter - Crowder
Gobert - Udoh

I think Miami is a team to watch. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.su.../fl-sp-ira-nba-column-20190119-story,amp.html

"That element of the equation seemingly would have Justise Winslow, Josh Richardson and Bam Adebayo as the priorities going forward, although, again, hardly off limits.

Which means . . . if there is a way to acquire future flexibility with the remainder of the roster -- be it cap flexibility, draft picks or an infusion of youth, then just about everything else should be on the table in advance of the Feb. 7 NBA trading deadline."

I really like Olykyk and Winslow. Miami is only $6 million away from being under the luxury and they have goals to be players in 2020 free agency. Olynyk and Winslow combine to make $26 next year which is the same as Porter and less than what Harris, Middleton and others will get this summer.

Winslow is the type guy who could make us a matchup nightmare. Imagine a starting lineup of DM, O'Neale, Ingles, Winslow, and Gobert. 3 different guys would initiate the offense. 4 can shoot the 3.

The lineup is extremely exiting and intriguing on both ends of the court.

Who says no to this trade:

Grizzlies get Waiters and Ellington
Heat get Parsons, Favors, Utah's 2019 1st
Jazz get Winslow and Olynyk

Grizzlies get to dump Parsons, save $12 million next year, and get two guys who help this year.

Heat get to dump 2 long term deals they don't want (Waiters and Olynyk). They would have loads of 2020 cap space. They also get a 1st rounder.

We get Winslow who is still only 22 and could be part of our core for the long term. Olynyk is a guy who can who could give us a stretch 5 option.

I don't think we'll make a big move. First of all I don't see a possible trade that the other team would accept AND would entice DL enough that he would pull the trigger. Second, we are on a little winning streak. We all know Jazz management is notoriously trigger shy when things are going well. I don't buy into the idea that things have turned around and that we are back to being the contenders we were last year. I still think that we have significant issues. But I wouldn't be surprised if the front office doesnt see better options out there on the trade block and just tries to convince themselves everything is okay and stands pat.
