Actually, yes I can. I’ve been there and am often there repeatedly still. I also deal with others in that position on a daily basis.

Cause they don't live in a vacuum. It would help them to be able to talk to the people in the country they live in and it would help the people of the country they live in to be able to talk to them.


Why is it a bad thing to learn the language of the place you live?

Also, making money isn't all that happens in a persons life. They might not need English to go to work and come home. But if they get into a car wreck they might need to know English to communicate with the other person involved in the accident.
What if they have a heart attack and need to call 911 but they can't communicate with the 911 operator. And a million other scenarios that happen throughout a long complex life where knowing how to communicate with people might be beneficial.

It also, unfortunately, hinders their upward mobility in a lot of cases. Basically we can all do more. But I find this whole area lacking.

That too.
The timing of this discussion is funny because twice in the last month my non English speaking neighbor who lives across the street has had issues that have negatively impacted her and the people of our community.

Her car that is parked on the street (which is not allowed in the winter when snow is forecasted but due to her lack of ability to speak and understand English she probably didn't know about this rule/law) was hit by another driver. Because she couldn't communicate with the other driver, or the cops, or the tow truck driver, what would have normally taken maybe an hour to get sorted out and cleaned up took much much longer. 4-5 hours. Traffic was backed up and the driver of the other vehicle couldn't get in with his life as quickly, the cops were tied up longer than necessary as well as the tow truck driver.

The other issue was one day she got her car stuck when she was trying to pull into her driveway. So I went to help her by digging it out and pushing. I asked if she had a shovel. She couldn't understand me. No big deal, I went and grabbed mine and dug the car out as best I could. Then I tried to tell her to get in and drive while I push since I'm pretty big and she us tiny so it would make sense that I push while she drives. She couldn't understand me and just kept pushing her keys at me and miming the driving motion with her hands I think, based on my ability to play charades, she wants me to drive.
So I get in and she just backs away rather than trying to push and I guess just expects me to be able to manuever her car out. But I can't. Cause it's stuck. I again try to get her to drive while I push but she just keeps shaking her head and won't take her keys.
So I go back into my house and get my wife (we leave our 2 year old unattended in the house, thank God nothing happened to her) and tell my wife she needs to drive while I push. Eventually we get her car into her driveway.


She is a tiny little Asian lady who knows no English. Sure would have been better for her and me if she knew a little English. Imagine if something horrible happened to my daughter while we were helping this woman get her car unstuck.

I like that neighbor btw. Never caused anyone trouble and keeps to herself ( I guess she has no choice since she can't communicate).

Speaking from personal experience, the vast majority of the ones I know would love to live in the United States. Maybe one or two of the twenty that we employ would prefer to stay in Mexico.

Some are better about learning English than others. I can say that I can see more effort from the English speakers here to learn Spanish to accommodate them, than vice versa.

Just my personal experience of hiring the same workers every year for the past 15-20 years.

You used a racial slur in your awesome post. You can't seem to avoid using racial slurs, referring to Muslims as animals, being misogynistic, using slurs and insults regarding the LGBTQ community. I can't think of any conservative person on this site that gets banned as much as you do. This has nothing to do with being a conservative or supporting Trump. You keep letting slip hateful slurs. People who wave the Virginia battle flag and claim that the confederacy “will rise again.” After 150 years they’re still living in a different country and time. People who build statues to traitors of our country who killed thousands of American fathers and sons. People who think blackface is funny or find the use of the N-word as acceptable language. People who think Nazism and the KKK are very fine people.

Why aren’t these people regarded as undocumented aliens? What makes them legal?

When will we put pressure on these aliens to assimilate?

In my opinion, the hardworking Hispanic who’s struggling to learn English but striving to provide a better life for themselves and their family have assimilated better into our mainstream American culture than those who brag about being traitors and fantasize about bringing others back into slavery.

I think that an immigrant who doesn't learn the language is doing themselves a disservice. They are excluding themselves from full participation in the society around them, and making things more difficult.

That being said, I understand that a lot of people wouldn't have the time, resources, and/or ability to learn a new language, and that's OK. I mean, I only speak 1 language fluently. I can curse in several more, however.

You're not wrong. I don't disagree with you. But is there evidence that immigrants today are learning English at a lower rate than the past? Why do we focus so much on immigration and assimilation when immigration is at historic lows, employment is at full, and millions of Americans (including several states) are completely disconnected from mainstream America?

Why was Alabama and Mississippi celebrating "Robert E Lee" Day on Martin Luther King Jr. Day? How "alien" is that? We all recognize who Lee was, right? He was a traitor to this country and butcher of thousands of good American patriots. He's responsible for thousands of murders and millions of dollars of economic dollars lost. His entire purpose in life was to fight to keep four million African Americans enslaved. DEPLORABLE! Why are so many states so alien, so out of touch, and so foreign as to commemorate that traitor and build statues of him?

When will those living in Alabama and Mississippi assimilate into modern American culture? They've had over 150 years now. Seeing that it's 2019 and they're still celebrating "Robert E. Lee" Day, I think it's fair to say that these states are making less effort to assimilate than your average immigrant from South America, right?
