2019 Trade Deadline Discussion

BUT, the Jazz are in a unique situation with Mitchell in a rookie deal. Bringing in Griffin doesn’t hurt salary wise. It’s like you are paying Griffin 20 million and Mitchell 10.

now that's an interesting point. i wouldn't want to pay an Otto Porter that money, but Griffin and it doesn't risk Mitchell? Possibly.

The real annoying thing was (i) drafting Tony Bradley and then (ii) him getting hurt this season. Couldn't even put up huge #s in the g-league and pump up his value - bad draft pick (pointless since we have Gobert, Favors and Udoh... who needs 4 true Cs in today's NBA?) and bad luck. I'm meh on Exum and his contract, but having a hard time seeing it as a world ender like all of you mopers

What if... we had missed the playoffs last year... like we were a couple games away...

Would we have been as committed to continuity and not addressed our flaws?
Would have had a shot at SGA or Bridges (maybe not though... went a couple picks ahead).

I think our success kind of intoxicated us and helped us not move the direction we probably should have. I fell for it too, so don't blame DL.

Hard to kill DL for a late first round pick miss, but...

Had we gone for Hart, White, or anyone with a little value... that prospect plus our 1st gets us in the neighborhood for Saric or something a little better.

the rationale behind the pick never made sense to me.

You act like the Jazz have done this for 5 years in a row.

Jazz spent so many picks trying to get PGs in the past 6 years. They have made moves, big and small.

Jazz are going for the big game in free agency.
Yep, I don't get that panic in this thread.

IMO once it became clear that we don't be able to get Jrue or Conley, I actually preferred that we stay pat. No other player that changed teams this trade deadline changes the fortune of this team(Maybe except for Harris, but come on... 2 firsts, 2 seconds + Shamet for expiring is insane) and in fact taking on most of them, prevents us from pursuing players that might be able to be gamechangers going forward(in FA next summer and/or the summer after).

Now, I am worried about us not being able to utilize the capspace, too... and I too think that failing to utilize it in the next 2 FAs will be a failure. But IMO a bigger failure would have been to waste that capspace on players that doesn't address our biggest needs and at the same time all but eliminate us from addressing them in the following 2 years.

Both Kurucs and Shamet were available at 21... The point is, if you don't have your eyes set on the right guy, it really doesn't matter what position you are drafting...

I've been keen on keeping Exum, I'm glad he wasn't included in a Conley deal. He has been trending in the right direction when he's on the floor-he's one of the only guys in the league allowed to play defense against Harden, and he's showing an ability to get to the rim reliably. That's really what we need next to Mitchell.

However, I'm to the point where he better be getting consistent playing time, producing with it, and staying healthy by next year's deadline. Otherwise I say enough's enough.

It’s insane to me that such an intelligent group of minds as the Jazz brass end up:
-having a roster 10 years behind the rest of the league, while they
-let their only two stars drown in help defense
-choking out their own master plan in free agency by committing eight-figures a year to an obvious bust.
Apparently the Jazz AND Memphis dont' view Exum as a bust considering Memphis wanted him and Jazz said no. I think I'll go with GM's value of a player over a simplistic "hes a bust"

So no trades.... DL has done a GREAT job as GM. But this is the biggest L he has taken in a long time. Nothing worthwhile is going to be available to us this summer in free agency. This was the time to make a move. Whether it was to improve the team now or punt an opportunity down the road by picking up an asset.

We don't know that until we see what happens in free agency. DL doesn't make trades just to make them.

I'm the biggest pro trade guy in the forum, and even I have come to terms with this trade deadline already. We are a family and we aren't breaking up the family right now. DL committed to this roster when he was knocking on Favors' door right when free agency opened.

We ride this out. Good or bad. Whatever the result.

After the season, Thabo and Udoh are gone or are minimum contract guys. Rubio is 50/50 coming back, but it seems very obvious that Exum is the future at PG. And honestly, there is no reason for Rubio, Exum, Neto AND Mitchell as PG options.

The biggest factor will be Favors. Can we trade him during the draft? If not, we have to let him go. I will be pissed if we bring Favors and Rubio back. Pissed.

That is fine... what happens if he has another hamstring injury or ankle in the second half of the year? Is that contract movable? The value is in perception of upside... he's shown flashes for sure... it's a stretch to say those flashes are who he is.

He's on the brink of being a bust because of injury and play... and has a decent sized deal.

Satoransky or keeping Rubio.

Tobias or keeping Favs.

While also making a push for high upside players like Oubre and Portis.

That should be our summer strategy.

Where was it reported that Exum was the hold up. By the same people reporting contradicting messages and leaks from various agents and teams? Don't think I've seen it from any Utah reporter (or any reporter recently, to be honest). I'm no Exum stan, but people complaining about his contract and yet coveting Porter is hilarious to me

Oh God, Porter. That would have been a disaster.
