Is the solution to a forum that allows racists to post to just ignore the racists? Really?

For clarity, Dutch’s ban now is permanent. He joins one other person in that status. My apologies for the continued disruptions around him (and others) but I’m a fan of less moderating than perhaps other forums. Anyway, I too hope Bulletproof changes his mind but didn’t appreciate the manner he chose to take this time.
 
pretty sure OP just said he wants the permaban if dutch doesn't get permabanned.

would've been nice if Jason decided to permaban dutch before he deactivated gameface/bulletproof
 
Now that Dutch is gone, I hope Bulletproof reconsiders. Forums are just not the same without you, buddy.

No, bulletproof made it very clear that he didn't care to wait to find out what Jason decided to do about dutch. Made no sense to me, and I didn't care for his melodrama either.
 
Count me among those who are shocked that everyone doesn’t have Dutch on ignore. And also among those who are shocked that he hasn’t been permabanned at least a dozen times.

He's reconsidered after a ban by drunk posting, would accomplish and still come back. Old habits die hard.

After a permanent ban for dutch rudder, how do you feel about DR's time here? Do you think you'll follow the same model in the future?
 
I think you have to be careful. Suppressing opposing views is a tough call. Dutch was over the top in many respects but it wasn't like he was constantly posting things like "**** all the n-words" and stuff like that. So where is the line drawn? Tough call. One way would be to simply make a blanket rule like "no political posts of any kind" or "no discussions of anything related to protected classes, like race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, etc.". I think if you want a robust and vibrant forum you will end up with some stuff like that from Dutch, which really was mostly borderline and hyperbolic, and then moderate as you can. Or you can always eliminate general discussion and stick exclusively to sports talk. Tough call.
 
Also, go back and read Dutch's final post and tell me what is racist about it? I just dida and honestly, what I read was him calling out what he saw as hypocrisy regarding reactions to the recent black face stuff, not that black face should be allowed or is fine. How was it racist? Seriously someone explain it to me, as I'm sure there is something I am missing.

Giving such a topic any type of attention gives it power. I never saw race. Wasn't ever a deal while I grew up, other than history class. Hard for me to relate to the ignorant people simply because I could have easily been born somewhere else, with different opportunities and paths.

It wasn’t that post in my mind. It was a lifetime achievement honestly. That post that had GF all bent out of shape with blackface was a bit trolling but add that to the history and ... well GF/BP got his way. I must be dense but I didn’t see the outrageousness in Dutch’s final post like some did. It was literally just a straw on the proverbial camel.

And thank you for admitting, honestly, that moderating is hard lol

And finally to Harambe, I don’t know if this is a change in practice. Probably not. We have been fine for 20 years with the current approach IMO. Two permabans that stick is a good ratio. Maybe, again, I’m dense.

Eh, it's a Utah jazz forum. If you act like a stupid douche all the time and everybody hates you and are annoyed by you then you should be banned.

You don't have to be careful about suppressing opposing views on a freaking Utah jazz forum.

Acknowledging that I've been a dick to the staff in the past, I also appreciate your apprehension to dramatically change in any "broad strokes" way. Thank you for answering honestly. In your shoes, I am pretty certain I'd have more than two permabans in 20 years, and perhaps you're on the right path.

Or you could be dense. I'm certainly not in a position to say.

I don’t agree. And like Log said, Dutch sometimes would just analogically make a statement that to me would sometimes have its merits but oftentimes didn’t because of his general blathering idiocy, anti-lib blinders, and 74 grammatical errors that made him seem dumber than he probably is. If that’s even possible.
