Memo Excited About Playing With Kanter

When the Utah Jazz drafted Enes Kanter with the third pick in the 2011 NBA Draft it meant that for the first time in NBA history two Turkish players would play on the same team. Mehmet Okur who has been a member of the Utah Jazz for seven seasons, and the only Turkish player ever to win a NBA Championship and be an All-Star talked about the selection and other topics.

Memo13: What dou you think about the Jazz drafting counteryman Enes Kanter? What dou you expect from Enes and the Utah Jazz as well as yourself in the upcoming season?

Okur: As you know there are 6 Turkish players presently in the NBA. I feel that Zaza Pachulia is also Turkish as he has Turkish passport and he grew up in the Turkish system as he had been in Turkey since a very young age. If we count Zaza, with Hidayet Turkoğlu (Orlando Magic), myself, Ersan Ilyasova (Milwaukee Bucks), Omer Asik (Chicago Bulls) and Semih Erden (Cleveland Cavaliers) that makes six Turkish players. Now with the drafting of Enes this will make it seven players. I am very excited that we will be the first Turkish players to ever play on the same NBA team. This will be a major milestone. Since my first days in the NBA, I always hoped that Hidayet and I would play on the same team, and together perhaps win a NBA Championship. It was a dream of mine, and now hopefully we will get there with Enes. We have a very wide big men rotation. I think everyone knows this and everybody will come prepared to do battle in camp. As far as Enes goes, the adjustment he needs to make to the NBA and to Utah in general should be easier because not just myself but my entire family will be there to help him out. Enes has a home already in Utah and I think he is well beware of that. I finished my ninth season in the NBA and I believe that my experiences will benefit him greatly.

Memo13: I think that the general expectations were for the Jazz to draft a point guard. You have felt for a while that Enes was on the Jazz radar even though you had not seen him play. When you heard that he was drafted by the Jazz were you surprised?

Okur: I can honestly say that I was surprised and also not that surprised. I felt that looking over this draft that there would be a strong chance that he could be drafted first and be teammates with Semih Erden. When he lasted until the third pick I said to myself Salt Lake City here you come. It did not take that long to confirm this feeling. I was not the only one that had not seen Enes play. There were many people that had not watched him play in the last two seasons. He had not played any serious basketball in two years. However the word "potential has so much weight in the NBA, the Jazz felt that he had great potential, a great future. For an organization like the Jazz, things like work ethic, character, behavior, team concept as well blending in with the team, the organization, the fans and the city is so important I think that the general thought was that there would be no problems in these areas and they picked Enes third. This team was built with the vision, the sweat and the efforts of Larry Miller and Jerry Sloan for the last 20 plus years, and so you know these are important virtues. In Salt Lake City you need to be honest, be your self, and if you are friendly, modest, warm and gracious you will be loved here. It is very simple.

Memo13: How is your injury and recovery going. In a recent article with a major Turkish newspaper you said you missed playing basketball so much. Where are you now?

Okur: I have come a long way. I am getting better and better. Working out listening to what the trainers say. No matter how much I miss basketball I know now much better that you can't rush things and hurry back before your body is ready. My gola is to be ready for camp in the best shape I can be. I will go to the USA in July and start concentrating on the upcoming season. I have missed my team mates and my Jazz jersey so much. This year I plan on having the fans watch an excellent Mehmet Okur.

Memo13: Did you hear or read where Kevin O'Connor had said that big men in basketball are like the a pitching rotation in baseball. You can never have enough quality pitchers or big men? What do you think about this? Also many people in Turkey are wondering do you see yourself playing along side of Enes in a Jazz uniform? Do you expect a trade prior to the start of the season?

Okur: No I did not hear about that comparison but even if I had, I don't know anything about baseball so I guess it would not have registered up here. As far as our big men rotation Enes and Derrick Favors are 19 or so. Paul Millsap and Al Jefferson have very different qualities when compared to me. The important thing is to put together a unit that compliments each other and also fills each others weaknesses. I think that my qualities are pretty much known. I played power forward early in my career and have been plaing mostly center since I arrived here in Utah. We have 2-3 big guys who can play both positions. Al Jefferson and Enes can play both positions. To be perfectly honest I get excited thinking about the possibilities with this rotation. As far as trades and othe management moves that is not my job. It is irrevelant what I think. That job belongs to Kevin O'Connor. I know he will have the best team available to be succesfull in Utah. We have been talking about Enes, but please don't frget about Alec Burks. He is a 6'6'' shooting guard. Now if he is a real shooting guard and able to play that position with that size that is a huge difference maker in the NBA. I am sure that he will have some great input. He is also 19 years old I believe and I have never been on a team where there have been so many key parts who were so young. Gordon Hayward is 21 years old. I can't wait for the season to start with all these young and talented guys.

Memo13: Finally anything you would like to say or add?

Okur: I would like to welcome Enes to Salt Lake City and hope that he has a great career here. Same with Alec. It is not easy being drafted so high. It brings with it a lot of expectations and responsibilities. Enes is the highest drafted Turkish player in our basketball history. It won't be easy with the Turkish media and newspapers following your every step. I know how that feels. Hedo knows how that feels. For long, long years the two of us tried to represent our country, our country's basketball and our people the best way that we could. Now a new generation of Turkish players have arrived with Enes being the youngest amongst them. We hope that they will take the flag from us within time and take it to newer heights. I know for sure that Hedo feels the same way. We did it our way, and the time is near for them to do it their way. We had a great run. NBA Championship, NBA All-Star, Most Improved Player Award, a couple of NBA Finals, a few NBA Conference Finals. We have done our best and although we are not finished yet by any means, we are ready for greater things from the new generation of Turkish NBA players. All I can say to them is "Choose your goals well, work hard and if that is not enough work harder, never be satisfied or fullfilled, and always remember the team comes first.". Once again welcome Enes to Salt Lake City. Our home away from home.

Thanks for posting.

Memo has always seemed like a great guy, but that's an awesome statement.

Was that not the greatest interview ever!lol

Wow all his answers were dead on and right to the point without being too short

Great post! Anything Okur can contribute this year would be gravy. His experience certainly could be very valuable to such a young team. I do hope we can keep his minutes down; he's got a LOT of talent around him now, so doesn't NEED many minutes; could be a great role player off the bench for us!

I am confident that we are building a contender and I could see the benefit of keeping guys like CJ, Memo, and even AK around to help develop this young core. I would imagine it would work best at a discount (should they choose to agree to it). We do this because they have been instrumental in the transition of the franchise between two special phases of it.

I still think we would be a better franchise moving forward with Jimmer and not Alec (I now hate Sacramento more than the Knicks) but things really do look quite bright for everybody's favorite team. I think they'll be a contender before most people even on this board realize. The West is wide open. Give us a piece or two more in the next free agency period and the 2012 draft and we've got liftoff.

Watching some old Memo vids. A healthy Okur is pretty damn good. IF he can be truly healthy still. Plus, what a cool guy it seems.

Well beware, huh? Is that a welcome or a warning?

p.s. Memo is the coolest!

Memo=Stud Memo has been one of my favorite Jazz players of all time. He has some holes in his game but other parts are pretty strong to. He has always seemed like a great guy. I hope he can contribute at least somewhat this year, he deserves a break or two.

Memo Excited About Plying With Kanter

A great interview. Thanks for posting. It has humor as with his comments about KOC comparing big men to a starting rotation. LOL. It shows respect and devotion to a couple of men who made the Jazz. And the "Our home away from home" sentence? Well my eyes got watery. Why should I lie. Hope Money comes back healthy. I miss those big threes and despite all the bigs here, we don't have a guy who brings what Memo brings to the table.

I know a lot of Jazz fans love to criticize Memo's defense and lack of athleticism but he has one great talent. He can shoot. He can rebound a little but shooting is how he makes his money. Last year, one of the biggest problems was the lack of 3pt shooting. Many fans seem to forget how great Okur is at it. Instead they focus on his weaknesses instead of appreciate his greatness. The dude can flat out shoot. Two things the Jazz needed coming off the bench last year.

I really believe some fans really underestimate Okur's impact on our team. His out side shooting opens up the lane, forcing a center to guard him at the 3pt line. He also won several games with clutch shooting at the end of the game. The Jazz had no one to consistently shoot 3 pts or take the clutch shot during the season. The Jazz had to rely on CJ too much for bench scoring. Just think about our bench this year with Okur healthy.

Say the starting lineup is : Harris, Hayward, CJ, Favors, Jefferson. Our bench could be Burks at PG, Bell at SG, Millsap SF (remember he will be playing against backup SF), Kanter PF and Okur C. Now you are talking about a young team with some veteran leadership and a team with a boat load of talent.

Our second team may be better than the first if Kanter and Burks are as good as advertised. There are many other possibilities with this roster. I loved the article and have always been a fan of Okur. Yes I have been frustrated with his lack of athleticism but Okur always played hurt, is a tough matchup due to his 3 pt shooting, and his clutch shooting.

The fact that he is a nice person and loves everything about being part of the Jazz organization only reminds me how much I've missed him being around. I certainly hope he is healthy and can provide the scoring, leadership and rebounding off the bench that the Jazz so desperately need.

The future is bright just look at the potential starting 5 in a few years.

GS pick
Burks
Hayward
Favors
Kanter

Good post Cowhide. I too feel too many have forgotten what a great player Okur had been for the Jazz. I think he's too one-dimensional, but very much appreciate what he did very well.

I love the young look we have going on. When in Jazz history have we EVER been able to build a team in this fashion? No, seriously, I have no idea.

I was critical of prematurely extending Memo but wow, maybe his injuries and awful play won't mater because he'll make up for it by mentoring Kanter into a stud of epic proportions.

4 lottery picks in 2 years...2 of them #3 big men... two more coming next year, if not more with trades. (lets be serious the Jazz aren't going to be better than 12 again) This is how you build a team... I mean who would you rather have if you're trying to win a championship in the next 5 years

Dwill, Watson, Scrub
CJ, Scrub
AK, Hayward
Sap, Evans
Big Al, Fes, Scrub

or

Harris, Watson
CJ, Burks
Hayward, Evans
Favors, Milsap
Jefferson, Kanter, Memo

with 2 more lottery picks coming

There is so much depth to this team as it is... the first team is a 6 seed consistently, the second team sky is the limit... not everybody is going to fulfill their potential, but people are already calling Favors "Dwight-light"... we don't know what Kanter can do, yet. Hayward was playing like a lengthy Brandon Roy late last season, and Alec Burks could be Brandon Roy... and Devin Harris, Paul Milsap, and AJ are not out of their primes, and we know each can play like an all-star. I don't foresee playoffs this year, but that might be good for adding more young guys (Austin Rivers). This team could be the Thunder, in a year or two.

Im sure he will resign for a good deal with jazz cuz he always mentioned he wanna retire in jazz (anyway i wouldnt give memo more than 5-6 million a yr)

But here another interview he had yestrday, u wont understand anythng so i l translate

https://www.ntvspor.net/video-galeri/mehmet-okur-spor-gecesine-konuk-oldu

Enes in interview :

In the time that i didnt play official games, i worked hard together with coach cal n my teammates, i was always confident, i never stepped back, i always knew that i will play in nba one day n will be picked by a great team, now i feel great, and i appreciate ur support to me, my goal is to represent turkey very well here. (btw i felt that his turkish diminished since the last 2 yrs as well as his english improved by margin)

second part: I really feel great that i will play along with a good player like Okur, i think he is a great player n i believe its my second home there, becuz we r both Centers n we r turks, thats why i believe it will be a great benefit for me to be in his team.

The interview :

Speaker: As we saw, Enes did pretty well with the interview, some players were too nervous to talk somethng but Enes managed that part pretty well. What r ur opinions?

Memo: When i was in draft night, i dont even know what i talked, Enes talked at least in a proper way. That feeling is great, he was picked pretty quick, i waited till 30s.. so i can guess how excited he is, now i believe he is so happy, he is over the moon, he made first step to his dream, nba. Im so happy that we picked him, i was talking to Hedo for long yrs that it would be great if we played together with him, but now i got this chance with Enes, and as an elder brother i will do anythng to help him in and off the court.

Sp: Enes also told, u worked a lot to make Enes come to utah

Memo : I had a chance to make a long talk with KOC n he asked me about enes, i told that i didnt have opportunity to meet him in person but whoever i talked about him, made great comments so i told those positive comments to KOC, that he is a very hardworking player n he is very versatile, so im very happy if i had any effect on this decision.

Sp: What difficulties Enes may face in Utah ? u know Utah very well, what kind of difficulties a rookie may have in Utah?

Memo: Lets not make it utah, but lets make it nba, becuz nowadays its easier to go there but the difficult thing is to stay there long years. He is 19, very young, with a bright future, everythng actually depends on him, as much as he works hard n love what he does, he can stay there long years. But he gotta take care of his body very well, we play around 100 games together with the playoffs in a season, its a very long marathon, he is now a rookie...

Sp: Do they make fun of rookies ?

Memo: Not much in utah but i have talked to a couple of teammates, they told about some jokes they already did to him but now its not proper if i say it on tv .
I can advice only one thing to enes, i will also tell it to his face when i see him , its a long journey, sometimes he will play 5 min, sometimes he wont play at all, he already lacks game practise for a while, he has long years ahead, he shouldnt give up, he should always get himself ready, season is long, there r injuries, as long as he is ready he will find opportunities to play.

interval, comments about enes from corbin, calipari n KOC ...

Sp: As we listened, lots of praises for him, now lots of young athlethes are watching us, nba is an important spot in world sports for a player to achieve, enes did it, referring to urself n Enes, what are ur advices to young players? We have 6 players in nba, wer r second after France in intl base.....

Memo: Yeah its very tough, he gotta be ready always, im sure he will find chance to play, as i told it depends on him, when i was in detroit in rookie year, i couldnt take much play time, i was getting 5 mins, then when rebreca was injured n then i suddenly started to play 30 mins, n second season i started in 5. He is already talented, im sure he will do fine, he shouldnt stress himself, as long as he takes care of himself he will play long yrs in jazz,

Sp: Ure the only turkish player who was allstar, do u think Enes can achieve that too?

Memo : Everythng depends on him, he gotta put some goals, i had my goals at the start of every season, as long as u have ur goals n u work hard, then why not?

Sp: Is there a trade possibility for Enes , or is there such gossips that u hear?

Memo: i didnt follow the news too much, but its something out of players control, there s lots of capital going on, its a great business, every team try to make their move before the seasons starts, its a part of job, its a part of life, he cant do anythng about it

Sp: Regarding the upcoming euro basket championship, what r the possibilities he will play n what can he add to the team?

Memo : Its really important for him to play becuz i wont be able to play, Semih n Omer asik is also injured i dont know how much progress they made but there is an obvious shorthanddedness in bigman rotation, if Enes plays in national team, he may close the gap of not playing games for 2 yrs a little bit, and he may be more ready before nba season starts, also he can gain experience n make the national team better.

Sp : What u think about the lockout?

Memo :i dont follow that much but...

Sp : how long may it last if it happens, n players can come to europe in that games?

Memo : Now as far as i know, due to the rules brought by FIBA, the players who already has contract cannt play in europe but the ones whose contract expired. Now this is what i know but in the upcoming days some stuff may change.

Sp: There is a fan question for u, about the injury update. is lockout an advantage for u?

Memo : I couldnt play almost a year due to the injury, now i wanna play but i also learned from my mistake. When my achilles tendon was torn, i wanted to return asap, becuz i was never a player who sits on the bench n do nothing, this was the longest injury ever for me, i returned too early after 9 months, i wished i didnt return, cuz after i return , my left was weak and then the problem jumped to my hip, to much pressure on my hip, so now i wanna be sensibile about my injury, not even 99% but i would return when im 100% ready.
