For all the nonsense talk of AK staying to "help us win" and being here for "the right price" I think we've misplaced this and that Memo is really the one who not only should we keep at the right price when the time comes but more than likely will come at the right price in addition to actually being capable of not only taking a lesser role but being okay with it. There has been a lot of Memo hate ever since the contract extension. I think it's good to look at our team for the past 5 or so years. Despite having some problems, we really were a good team. Let's look at some of the players we've had over that period of time...
Carlos Boozer
Andrei Kirilenko
Matt Harpring
Deron Williams
Gordan Giricek
Devin Brown
Milt Palacio
Keith McLeod
Jarron Collins
CJ Miles
Kris Humphries
Greg Ostertag
Derek Fisher
Paul Millsap
Ronnie Brewer
Araujo
Dee Brown
Kyle Korver
Ronnie Price
Jason Hart
Fesenko
Raja Bell
Morris Almond
Brevin Knight
Kosta Koufos
Wesley Matthews
Memo
A couple people were left off this list but for obvious reasons. Now, we can take this list and distill it down to players who would actually fit in to a really good team concept and bring positivity and aren't selfish players:
Matt Harpring
Jarron Collins
CJ Miles
Derek Fisher
Paul Millsap
Ronnie Brewer
Kyle Korver
Ronnie Price
Brevin Knight
Wesley Matthews
Memo
On the above list, you have a few exceptions in there that technically fulfill criteria but may not be applicable for reasons such as aren't in the league (Harpring, Knight) dont' fit criteria for a negative but also don't fit criteria for a positive (Miles) and then those fit criteria but lack talent (Collins, Price). This reduces this to:
Derek Fisher
Paul Millsap
Ronnie Brewer
Kyle Korver
Wesley Matthews
Memo
Despite the way he left, I think Fisher was a huge positive for our team (off the court) while he was here and I think a big part of our WCF run. Millsap is on our roster currently, so it's not necessary to discuss him. Ronnie Brewer is a pretty positive guy and I think he makes a positive impact on a team with regard to chemistry and attitude. Kyle Korver ditto with Brewer. Wesley Matthews is gone. If you throw in guys from this year like Jefferson and Harris then that can also be evaluated as to what they bring. Jefferson, I think, fits more into the mold of a CJ Miles in that he's not a negative for chemistry by any stretch of the imagination, but he's not necessarily leading or setting an excample, either. Hopefully we see more this year. I know little about Harris. Sounds like he could be a positive guy.
Anyway, I think it's doubtful Memo gets traded since the only way we deal him is if we're receiving more salary in return (since that's why he'd be valuable). I think he's the perfect guy to bring back since I think he can actually be productive in a limited role (shooting) and can be a positive guy with real experience off the bench. I don't share any of these feelings about Kirilenko.
A few positives about Memo:
-Before his recent injury problems he was always our healthiest guy.
-He's never played for his stats.
-He's never complained.
-He's never been anything but positive.
-Whenever Boozer was out he always stepped up big time (in '05-'06 he put up 18/9, the next year 18/7, '08-'09 17/8)
-Deron and Memo were the only guys we had that would always come through in crunch time.
-Outside of Nowitzki there is no other player his size that can shoot the ball the way he can, a skill that I doubt is going to decline much with his age.
