Dante has been out forever because he ded

DL is the Genie from Aladdin. He has all power, but an itty bitty living space here in SLC. He has some restrictions though, he can't make fans fall in love, and he can't raise players from the dead.

I think the frustrating thing is that he has looked like he could be really good before an injury.
At one point I was very excited to see him play and see him contribute.
The idea of his speed and size is nice, it just hasn't panned out... so the frustration and this thread makes perfect sense to me.

It ain't happening... we shoulda played hardball with him this summer and gotten him on a better value or let him walk.

I will reiterate my biggest issue with the Dante Exum Experience (btw much of this isn't his "fault"). The slow nature of this fail is what is most costly. We lose a season to tank for him... that's fine... picks don't work out. We never really commit to getting another guy because you need to have a route to playing time... so we spend on fill in options and make trades for guys that can be good while he gets there. We triple down and give him a deal that was probably like a 20% overpay at the time... if we could have gotten him at say 10% under market, so 3/18 or 3/21 with final year non-guaranteed he's a much better asset. If he got a big offer and walks that is fine. Now we have Favs looking like a great fit when Ricky isn't also on the court... we could pick up his option, but then wouldn't have meaningful cap space... unless we dump Dante for no salary (good luck).

So the Dante experience cost us a lot... but much of it could have been avoided by cutting our losses. Hopefully knee is fine and he comes back and looks fine... I am out on the guy though.

In the tech world the thing VCs hate is when failing ventures hit the brakes on the way off the cliff. The Exum bust (its what it is guys) has cost 2x-3x because we hit the brakes... sometimes patience pays off... I get it... this sucks for everyone.

If the Jazz can find a better way to use ~6 million per year*, they should use the stretch provision on Dante.

*his cap number would be ~$4.2 million over five seasons rather than $10.6 over two seasons.

I did this math today as well... sigh. I think his caphit is 9.6 though... so only 3.84M over 5 years. He missed on some incentives.

I do think you could flip him to a team for a 1 year 8-10M deal and stretch that contract to make it a more palatable 3M over 3 years.

The reality is if Dante can't be moved for no salary (it's tricky to even accomplish early in July) it will cost us one of the following things:

- Favs - Would need to waive his deal to get to max space. Could keep him if we didn't have Dante's deal and still have $26M.
- Korver - to get to 22-23M we could waive and stretch Korver's non-guarantee... I think he could be moved into someones exception is we really wanted to.
- Meaningful FA dollars... could keep Favs, Korver, and Dante's deal but go from 26M to 16M in space.

Could also move Crowder to create some space but he's a good rotation player... not sure that is wise.

So please don't tell me Dante's contract doesn't matter

Like I still think you could flip Dante to Detroit for Leuer (1 year 9.5M) or Porty for Meyers Leonard (1 yr. 11 M)

Could also be used in the inevitable Love deal...

We ain't getting Tobias or Brogdon cuz of his contract. Unless we wanna say goodbye to Favors, which we don't.

I wouldn't use a stretch provision, it's better to bite a bigger bullet short term than have a lingering 3 - 5 mil on the books for the next 5 years. I'd probably be more willing to dump my 1st this year to move Exum's contract if I was the Jazz and wanted to cut ties with him in the offseason, as you can also save money by not having to pay a rookie scale contract as well if saving $$$ is the priority.

But I'm not that high on this years draft outside of Zion + a couple of others so I'm content to not have a pick this year.

This guy isn't worth a roster spot. Dennis linsdey done messed up. Luckily his deal is only 1/10 of the cap.
