What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

Gotcha...thanks for clearing that up. I think I'd like Terrance Ross over Lamb personally.

I think they'd both end up in the Quin's "AB Memorial Doghouse". Neither guy has a rep as a basketball genius. He could likely get over it if they were producing.

True... I think he could have had Love for a pick to last trade deadline. I think the first time he passed it was a misevaluation of what we thought we could get him for and driving a tough deal. I think we thought they'd end up settling for a second.

I don't think he feels the hot seat at all... I don't think he needs to win the press conference. I think Gail has made his job status very safe. Love would be such a panic move.
I’m not saying he needs to win the press conference. What I’m saying is that he’s more or less established what he thinks of Niko — a guy not worth trading a first rounder for. So signing him probably isn’t something that he sees as drastically improving the team. So the incentive to obtain him isn’t really there, especially as you can’t really put a lot of PR spin on it.

Regarding the hot seat, however, I do think he feels pressure but not necessarily about job. Gail wouldn’t (and shouldn’t) fire him, but I think he knows pretty well how he’s inadvertently painted himself into a corner while banking on flexibility. If he doesn’t spend this summer, that capspace magically disappears and we’re SOL to obtain talent in the future unless he pulls a miracle out of his *** (banking on miracles is a bad strategy but one not infrequently endorsed by some in the fan base). So his success and legacy as a GM very much depends on what he does... so he surely feels some pressure. He felt enough pressure to take all of his chips he has been hoarding and lay them on the table to exchange for Mike Conley. Worth repeating that if all the “maintain flexibility” supporters had known all along that it could result in Conley, they’d have been flabbergasted, but as they’d functioned as frogs in a slowly boiling pot of water, it never seemed that bad when we arrived there. Such is Love.

You are good at words.

I do think the reasons he hasn't traded for Niko are less about his opinion of Niko and more about his reluctance for change... particularly with favors.

I agree with the larger point though... you can only maintain flexibility so long and good options fall off as you wait... hopefully for better options... but in our case there is a chance we settle and it all becomes disappointing. Before people jump in and say I'm impatient... I was saying we should sign guys before Hayward left... we haven't had a ton of opportunities with our cap space since he left.

I still think there is an outside chance we land a Harris or Middleton, but am becoming somewhat concerned we make a bad panic move or essentially run it back without major changes.

How would you define running it back without major changes? I don't think there's any way he can bring back Favors and Rubio with some minor tweak here and there. I have a healthy amount of skepticism about Harris. Not that I'm on a Love bandwagon, but I do think one advantage of him is the fact that it seems we lose a lot of games down the stretch by not being able to secure rebounds. The games where Favors has closed for us (very few... were there even 5 all season?) were big because he always came up with timely boards. Our comparison with Love shouldn't be Favors. It's the fact that Favors doesn't see the floor due to spacing and we end up with someone who isn't a rebounder, and we basically have Rudy shoulder the boards all alone. The fact that we are afforded two rebounders on the floor while aso having a much more respected floor spacer is huge.

Anyway, I don't know. What I'd really like to see is getting Conley and signing Jabari.

Bojan Bogdanovic is my guy. I predict he'll be in a Jazz uniform next season.

Bringing back Favs or Ricky or both would be running it back. Like we get to July 7 and say we will bring back Favs on his option... Ricky realizes there ain't much out there so we get him on a cheaper one year deal and they convince themselves with all this flexibility they can make changes with trades... kinda like we did last summer.

I'd like Conley, think we could add Niko or Gay if we went that route... I will take Parker on a minimum deal, but I don't want him at any salary that is high enough that we need to rely on him to be a winning basketball player. The hate has gone a little far on him, but at this point he needs to prove it a little.

Love has health issues, can't create off the dribble, is a defensive liability, and has the worst contract in the NBA this side of John Wall and Nic Batum. There is a chance Love wouldn't get crunch time minutes because of defense. That is the hail mary, desperation move a team does when they have burned up all assets and have a star moving in the next 6-12 months (my prediction... Charlotte goes for him to maybe help convince Kemba they got him some help).

Who knows... I think we will have a lot to discuss in July though.

I've said DL is a top 3 GM and held that through our bad stretches the past couple years. I didn't really agree with fully running it back last year. If we ran it back this year, I'd lose all confidence in DL.

I'm on board with this. I'm not a huge fan of Mirotic. He's probably had a bit of a down year, but the games I've seen him play with NO and Milwaukee (about 6 or so) he didn't do much more than shoot 3-pointers. Obviously that would help the Jazz, but I don't think it outweighs what Favors brings with his offensive rebounding, pick-n-roll play and interior defence. I'd rather see a solid shooter at PG.
I think Conley would help a lot. He can create for himself and others, can shoot the 3, plays solid defence and from what I gather from Memphis fans is a high character guy. He should fit in very well. Yes, he's older, but I think the Jazz (and Mitchell specifically) would benefit from a veteran with a lot of experience on the floor regularly (as opposed to Korver, whom I love but is not a leader on the floor). How many times did we fall apart at the end of close games this year? Also, Conley's contract runs out when Mitchell needs to get paid, so that leaves some felixibility in the future.
I'm also fine with taking a chance on Jabari for reasonable money (around the MLE if available). Washington will not pick up his contract for next year at 20m (I assume) and his value should have dipped. The guy can score and can even rebound a little. A team like the Jazz, that has trouble attracting free agents, should sometimes take a gamble on a guy that can be had for less than established stars and hope this is the right environment for him to flourish. Look what the move to Brooklyn did for DLo.

But then again, what do I know...

Forgot to add that Mirotic has missed quite a few games this season and last, so is not much better than Love in that regard.

This year is the only year he's had injuries and it wasn't a knee or foot... it was an ankle and he broke his thumb... so contact type injuries. Last year he missed games because Bobby Portis broke his face in a fight... He is not nearly as injury prone and had been above average in games played prior to this year. He will also make a lot less than Love does over the next 4 years.

Kind of where I am... last year I thought running it back was in part for trade purposes... and we didn't make a deal. Still thought we could have added a Tolliver, Bjelica, or shooter with the MLE.

I do think he tried to make a trade

Yes they did, but didn't get it done... either because the assets weren't attractive enough or they didn't push hard enough. So if that was the plan... it failed. I realize it takes two to deal.
