I’m not saying he needs to win the press conference. What I’m saying is that he’s more or less established what he thinks of Niko — a guy not worth trading a first rounder for. So signing him probably isn’t something that he sees as drastically improving the team. So the incentive to obtain him isn’t really there, especially as you can’t really put a lot of PR spin on it.
Regarding the hot seat, however, I do think he feels pressure but not necessarily about job. Gail wouldn’t (and shouldn’t) fire him, but I think he knows pretty well how he’s inadvertently painted himself into a corner while banking on flexibility. If he doesn’t spend this summer, that capspace magically disappears and we’re SOL to obtain talent in the future unless he pulls a miracle out of his *** (banking on miracles is a bad strategy but one not infrequently endorsed by some in the fan base). So his success and legacy as a GM very much depends on what he does... so he surely feels some pressure. He felt enough pressure to take all of his chips he has been hoarding and lay them on the table to exchange for Mike Conley. Worth repeating that if all the “maintain flexibility” supporters had known all along that it could result in Conley, they’d have been flabbergasted, but as they’d functioned as frogs in a slowly boiling pot of water, it never seemed that bad when we arrived there. Such is Love.
