What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

Maybe Tony talked with someone inside the organization recently and they told Tony a new talking point.

That's possible but seems pretty dumb. Why would we send out a message that we don't want Exum now but we did a couple weeks ago? Why would we want to lessen his value?

The logical thing to do is tell everyone that we still believe in Exum and that he's in our plans.

You’re right. There is sometimes good logic in lying.

But how much longer will that last, but isn’t Holiday a much better defender?

Don’t know... neither does anyone... it’s likely that Jrue plays better than him going forward, but that’s why he’s on sale for a price we can pay and Jrue can’t be had for all of our movable assets... there is some risk there... the reward is definitely there too.

He’s prolly just telling the truth now... it isn’t like they are advertising this or they told Tony to say it.

Tony likes Dante. "Sadly"

Good PR (and group manipulation) makes it so people believe they reached the conclusion before the leader/boss/organization made the decision.

Also good PR to leak a bit of info to test the audience response while you can still back off, and let the rumours stew because most people today overeact in negative ways when facing new information.

Do people know that Mike Conley was better than Jrue Holiday last year? Just curious.
Meh, I don't think Conley's slightly better regular season over Jrue is enough to outweigh Conley's health/contract situation and Jrue being a much more versatile matchup tool when it comes to playoff time on the defensive end. We saw him literally take Lillard out of a series on the way to sweeping the Blazers for example.

Speaking of Conley though

I haven't done the cap calculations yet but does anyone know if there's a world where the Jazz could sign Tobias outright and then trade for Conley?

Health doesnt matter for Utah PGs. The position is cursed, so whoever is PG will get injured no matter what.

Financially, it could happen.

Renounce/waive Favors, Rubio, Neto, Thabo and Udoh.

Sign Tobias ($32.7 million max)

Guarantee Korver's contract because it would be needed to make the salaries work with Memphis better than his nonguaranteed $3.5.

Trade Exum, Korver, Crowder, and Bradley ($28 million) for Conley ($34).

We might also have to waive or trade Niang ($1.6) to fit all this, but it does seem financially possible.

So we’d have Gobert, Harris, Ingles, Mitchell, Conley and Allen?

No matter who we get this year, it’s still not enough to win a title. At the end of the day, our chances of winning it all fall completely on if Dennis can pull another rabbit out of a hat in the draft. I wouldn’t deal a single a pick for any player. Exum is completely dealable IMO

Those misses on Burke and Exum have been so costly. Just Brutal. Not only did they cost us 3 1st round picks on them, 2 of them lottery picks, but then had to spend another lottery pick on George Hill for a year, then another pick for Rubio for 2 years because neither Exum nor Burke panned out... and now we are about to spend one or two more picks for Conley for another year or two. What a disaster... and we still have nothing to show for it and no long-term PG solution. In essence we might spend 7 1st round picks on PGs and none of them would start for us for more than 2 years.

But if we hit on Burke or Exum it likely changes the course if the franchise to where we might not get Mitchell.
