What's new

2019 Draft Combine

If we're drafting at 52, go ahead and take anyone with potential. The last guys we've picked like Olivier Hanlan, Joel Bolomboy, that PG from North Carolina, etc. haven't stuck in the league.

I'm trying not to get attached to prospects this year. Got a feeling it's going to be a trade year. Putting all my love into 2nd rounders. Give me Chris Clemons as well.

What did Perrin say about Clemons that you liked? I just saw some articles say stuff like he has a body we'd all love to have, he has strength and length, and he needs to add a floater and be more of a pest on defense.

Said he could be a plus defender

I don't think we trade the pick pre-draft. Maybe when free agency opens, but I don't think we do anything meaningful before free agency opens unless we hear that we are out on Kemba and Tobias.

If we don't trade it on or before draft say they probably aren't trading it. A pick becomes way less valuable after it's used.

I'm looking for archetypes, players I know who can make an impact based on the match of their measurables and skills.

You can draft Nickeil Alexander-Walker and develop him to play like a bigger, longer George Hill. He's like SGA, except he shoots better and is less crafty off the dribble.
You can draft Talen Horton-Tucker and play him like he's Lance Stephenson, if that's something the system will allow. I'm intrigued by his age, measurables and ability to do a bit of everything.
You can draft Kabengele and play him like he's Serge Ibaka. I look at him as a 3D player, even though he's a big. But he won't put the ball down or make a play with a pass. If he gets the ball on offense, more often than not, that will be the end of the play.
You can draft Louis King and develop him as a finesse forward who can score 15 ppg, like a Rashard Lewis, but he won't contribute for a year or two from now, and he may never be more than a rotational defender.

The guy the jury is still out on is Darius Bazley. He's got real ball skills and good measurables. If he turns out to be functionally athletic and is able to create off the dribble, then he could be really good. He survived his scrimmage today, which is encouraging, considering how little he's played.

I'm not sure I would draft Luka Samanic, to be honest. Even though he's matured as a player, I think he comes out a bit as a tweener big. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think he's too big and too slow to play out on the floor, even though he tested great today. His role would be to sit out on the perimeter and wait for the ball to swing to him. We can get that from lots of different guys. Kurucs can play on the ball at the top of the circle. So can Saric. I'm not sure if Samanic can do that yet. It's worth working him out though. He'll be a rotation player, at least, probably in the role of a Jonas Jerebko.

Brandon Clarke seems like he's Aaron Gordon from Arizona, except he's 3 years older and doesn't have the ball skills. I have a hard time seeing where he fits in, unless he learns to shoot and plays 3/D.

Jordan Nwora looks like he could be a steal to me. If I were the Jazz I'd bring him in and see what he looks like trying to create with the ball from mid-range.

Kezie Okpala can play, but I'm not sure I see a boatload of upside at the NBA level. I'd work him out and see what he looks like trying to take guys off the dribble.

It’s true... I mean unless they can get a first next year I just don’t know what they trade it for... any trade with the pick would likely change salary stuff... the Conley deal is much more likely after July 1.

Maybe a team like Phoenix flips the Milwaukee pick next year for our pick... IDK... just don’t see the trade that makes sense right now.

Actually, let me check that take on Samanic. If he can play as a stretch 5, there could be something there, but that's going to demand a lot of him physically that he may or may not be able to handle. I think he's a guy you compare side by side with Jontay Porter.

Maybe we just need to take this guy if he's there. He's a John Wall or Russell Westbrook-caliber athlete who wants to play and be good. Maybe that's enough...
