2019 Draft Combine

Samanic is my guy at 23 until I see something better. I'd take him over Kabengele for example.

His hand pads and balance beam routine are ***... spare me the fact that he makes shots and is athletic... ain’t got time for that ****.

I actually assumed a lot of people would compare Lecque to Simons, but I didn’t like Simons last year and def am liking Lecque this year.

I think he’s more athletic and “mature” looking than Simons but Simons is longer, no?
Simons is more of a combo/2.

Lecque is a modern athletic 1

I agree. I wasn’t necessarily comparing the two as much as I was admitting that I hope the Jazz take more risks on young, athletic players with high upside in the draft. IMO - they “play it safe” too often and should take more risks. For what it’s worth. . . the guy I really wanted last year was Kevin Huerter (and I was pretty sure they’d have to trade up to get him.)

High upside takes into account a lot of things, such as IQ, heart/competitive, work-ethic, attitude, character, works and plays well, loyal... any of those things aren't there and "young and athletic" becomes "bust".

We can just enroll him into some proprioception enhancement classes... no worries.

He is one of a few guys I like... I like Washington, Williams, Thubulle and him... I think all of those guys rose higher than they are currently being mocked. If we stay at 23 I’d take any of the... regardless of hand pad strength.

His body has completely changed. He looks like a completely different person than he did 18 months ago. He looks like a real big now.

I wouldn't put him ahead of Kabengele at this point. The appeal of Samanic is that he can do a bit of everything, but he isn't explosive. He can handle a bit, pass a bit, shoot some, play with size inside, etc. The question is how many of these things will really stand out at the next level. If Samanic can be a plus-shooter, that becomes his calling card.

I might take Samanic ahead of Jontay Porter though, given Porter's health situation.

I mean if you can get him in the second I’d go all day... projects like that you kind of have to hope something clicks early and they are playable in year 2 or 3... otherwise those are guys you try to get after they’ve worked through some **** for a couple years... I wouldn’t use a first for him.

He pulled out of the games today so I’m guessing he has some interest that he likes. I could see him as a long term stars project.

I wouldn't overreact to one scrimmage at the Combine. Samanic probably goes late first/early second unless he shows that he's close to a knock-down shooter. I'm not sure he's a starter in the NBA.

Lecque has zero shot. Zero. And his form looks shaky. That would be very concerning to me.
I’d try to bring both Bazley and Lecque in for workouts. Have them run with some experienced players and base a lot of my evaluation off of what they do in that environment. I think that a mid-to-late 1st round pick like #23 would be enough to entice them to come workout.

I’m not wasting a 1st on one of those guys.

There’s like 3 guys I’m pretty sure are starters in this whole draft... so that’s really not the best evaluation. I think the nba has kind of let some of the euro guys slip in the last few drafts... I think there may be some market inefficiencies there right now.

All these guys are gambles so you hope you find the best bet and then watch it play out.

I wasn’t saying that. Guess I should’ve been more specific. Having a late mid-to-late 1st round pick like #23 should be enough of an enticement to get guys who wouldn’t normally look at Utah to come participate in the Jazz predraft workouts. Regardless of where you pick them, anyone perceived to be outside of the first round should be looking to change that narrative. It’s crucial for the Jazz to see these guys in person to properly evaluate them.

How many young US guys who've gone in the late 1st or later have gone on to do anything in the league? I'm of the opinion that the best strategy in that position is to look for under-appreciated older guys/internationals.
