What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

Of the players I listed first he is lowest, but I would be happy to get him. I dont think he is worth the max but we will have to overpay to get a solid FA. Walker seems like a possibility as well and I would prefer him by a decent amount.

Longer deal. We could bump it down a few million and give him 4 years.

We’d have to waive him to do it... hope he doesn’t get claimed and that he wants to negotiate with us. If he had other opportunities in the same price range I’m sure he’d go that route.

The market for center could be pretty bleak... I don’t think I’d spend more than 8 or 9M on a center that wasn’t a huge difference maker. Some teams will overpay but I don’t see it as a wise allocation of resources... so who knows... maybe Favs gets crunched in a tight market.

The thing to watch on Russell... if they don’t move Allen Crabbe around the draft then they don’t have max space for Jimmy unless the waive Russell’s caphold. It is rumored Jimmy may go there and it makes some sense.

If they move Crabbe they have no issue... if they don’t then Russell could become unrestricted.

I personally quite like the idea of running it back with Donovan, Rudy and a cast of characters.

Jingles
Royce
Seth Curry
Al Farouq Aminu
Looney
Beverly

Its an option on his contract right? So we are not waiving him we are just not picking up his option. That would make him a FA right away. Yes, he could go else where but I assume if we talked to him before he might agree. Favors is a difference maker. He was our 3rd best player and was arguably our best player in the playoffs. He can play the 4 and 5 for us. Him and Rudy arent the best fit but they can play together well if we have a PG that can shoot. He was our best rim protector statistically this year and our best big at guarding outside the paint.

If we can get a big name FA, then by all means let him go. If we can figure a way to keep him as well even better. But dont let him go to pick up meh players. He is worth more than that in a trade later.

I dunno, after watching the warriors last night, I honestly think you can only have one traditional big man on your roster. The rest need to be highly specialized for varying looks depending on what offense you’re dealing with. I’d kill to have Looney and Jordan Bell

He is unguaranteed... not an option. You either waive him or his contract guarantees at the full amount. We wouldn’t have bird rights or any of that... if after he cleared waivers he wanted to negotiate a deal with us we could use cap space... I’m guessing we’d have to slightly overpay his non-Utah market to make him happy.

Love the guy but we aren’t making a meaningful change if he is around next year.

You don’t have to kill anyone we could sign either guy.

You need a backup center but they are plentiful... the playoffs get smaller and more skilled as they progress, but I don’t think you can play that way night in and night out.

Well, if that is the case you waive him and talk to him ahead of time. He likes consistency. If another team makes him a big offer or picks up his contract, best of luck to him. But again, he a really good player and if we can pick up a PG that can actually shoot he can play more with Gobert. We can win with him. He was better than Gobert in the playoffs this year. According to almost every advanced stat he was our best player in the Playofffs this year by a decent amount. Plus again he is worth a decent amount in a trade if we keep him, plus we would need his salary for trades anyways. If we cant pick up a good FA its just plain stupid to waive him.

Right that is why I said pursue them and if you cant get one of them to commit, then keep Favors. Some of the tier 2 we might be able to get if we restructure Favors deal.

I agree. A Tier 2 player will create a much better chance to keep Favors. But I still wonder what is more important to the jazz, a stretch 4 or a creative point guard?

Agreed. Favors is a true talent, and should be used to acquire another one.

Basically center has the same value as a running back does in the NFL. The top few guys are worth it, but if you don't have one of those guys, it doesn't make sense to invest heavily into the position.

Top guys are worth the max... average starters don't pay more than 10-15M... backup $5m or less...

Watching last night when the game is superfast and average guys like Looney and Bell were causing problems when Portland went small. Rudy would have absolutely murdered them. GS is a little different, but you can do more on the perimeter with the guards if your center can actually influence guys in the paint. There will be matchups where he is less effective, but the narrative that he can be played off the court is a bit much.

Russell should be the target. If we get him, we can build from there. We don't need to piece together the PG position anymore. Conley is great, but his impact would be temporary.

Russell
Mitchell
O'Neale
Gobert

That is our core going forward. Hopefully, we can add to that too.

I'd rather go after Kemba, Conley or Brogdon at point guard over Russell, and I'd rather have Tobias over any of those guys and just roll with Donovan/Joe running the point. Russell's inefficient and as great as Donovan is we all know he's not the most efficient player in the world either. I just don't think it would make for a good pairing in the backcourt. Russell's also had some character/immaturity issues, doesn't have the "Jazz DNA".

Fortunately Conleys contract runs out the same time as Dons and Gobs
