What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

I think he's saying he won't take the supermax so that if Charlotte continues to be terrible, they'll be able to trade him.

Charlotte can't build around Kemba even if he stays for less. They are strapped.

Tony Jones q&a in The Athletic. Some highlights

Q: Hi Tony. Thanks for all your insight into the organization. What is your ideal starting 5 for the Jazz next year?
A: I think the Jazz' ideal starting five would include Mike Conley

(Tony also says Conley is a “Plan A move”)

Are there any free agents other than Harris/Russell/Kemba (or a Conley trade) to keep an eye on for the Jazz? Both as other higher level guys worth losing Favors and complementary guys who'd fit into the room exception/mid-level exception/cap space?
The Jazz are focused on plan A moves, moves that elevate them into the next tier. They will have plan B, but this is the summer they are focused on trying to acquire the next piece to a potential title roster

If we strike out in free agency, what are your thoughts on Kevin Love? What would it take to trade for him?
I don't see the Jazz trading for Kevin Love

What free agents do you think the jazz will get this summer?
Not going to predict. What I know is that they are in play for several free agents. I would currently put them in the top three for Tobias Harris

Do you think Harris will take a meeting with the jazz before he decides?
Yes. Absolutely. That is if the Jazz haven't already made a significant trade that would take them out of a big money free agent deal

So basically Harris’s first choice is Brooklyn and the jazz next
Nets and then Jazz/Sixers are right there

Is one of the jazz goals this offseason to acquire players that spread the floor to maximize the skills of Rudy and Donovan?
Two goals: One is to acquire a dynamic playmaker. The other is to acquire more shooting

Is there a mutual interest between Russel and the jazz?
Yes. But Russell has interest in the Pacers, and Mavs. There would be a line forming if Russell becomes an unrestricted free agent

Any non-free agents on other teams you think the jazz should target via trade if they strike out in free agency? Thinking guys like TJ Warren/ Aaron Gordon types.
Spencer Dinwiddie for sure

Any word on whether Korver is going to play another year?
My gut feeling says he will return for another season

If the Jazz whiff on landing a big FA & the trade market (I really hope that doesn't happen) do you see Pat Beverley as a possible fit with the Jazz?
I think there's more of a chance the Jazz make Donovan Mitchell their starting point guard

Do the Jazz have interest in trading for Danilo Galinari?
I would say small chance

Where is Dante this summer? SLC? Can you update on his condition? Types of workouts he is into at this point?
In between Los Angeles and Salt Lake. He expects to be ready for training camp.

Does the front office feel they can move the jazz within the top 3 of the West, while keeping favors? If so what are some avenues for that to happen?
Not sure if that is possible. I think most of the moves they can make that elevate them a tier would cost them Favors

I would think russel would like the idea of playing with Donavan Mitchell
Of course. The two are close

Is there a player in this draft that the Jazz have had a "Donovan Mitchell reaction" to and are willing to move up for to get?
I wouldn't say Donovan Mitchell reaction, but I think the Jazz like Edwards and Okpala

Do the jazz like Eric Paschall a lot? Seemed he had a good workout
I do. I think he's potentially an elite role player

Hey Tony, is there a lot of trade competition for Mike Conley?
Yes. Teams have incquired

If Harris signs with the Jazz, thoughts on trading for a PG like Dragic or Teague?
Dragic is a good player whom the Jazz like. Not sure the Jazz have interest in teague

How likely is a trade before the draft? Assuming that trade is for Conley, does that mean we have heard from other guys that they won't be coming here?
There is a definite possibility the Jazz make a trade within the next week. Right now, I would say Conley is the guy the Jazz want.

Are the jazz all even with the pacers and Mavericks for russel?
I think the Pacers lead for Russell if he were to become an unrestricted free agent

So basically if the nets get kd would you say it’s very very likely the Jazz game Harris? And if the nets get Harris that we have a very good chance at russel
Better chance at Harris than Russell. If Philly offers the max, Harris could always take the money. Russell will have a slew of teams offering him

So.... I think the Jazz goal in the next week is to complete a trade for Conley. And there's a strong chance that the trade involves the #23 pick going to Memphis. Tony Jones is pushing Conley talk hard and not hiding anything. David Locke is constantly looking at trade options involving 23. Walt Perrin has talked a lot about finding a guy who can make an immediate impact if we do draft a player. I think we see the bigger picture of the Jazz focus right now... They want something that will change the roster now, not in the future. I'm glad they are being aggressive. I wouldn't be surprised to see a deal for Conley get done in the next week.

Even if we're not getting anyone, it'd suck to be out of the running before the bonanza even begins by getting Conley early.

I would still love to have Conley but I'm skeptical if we have enough assets to get him. It seems there are a lot of teams that could beat our best offer.

Can someone smarter than me walk me through the advantages and disadvantages of trading vs free agency (assuming the Jazz get someone on their A list -- Russell, Conley, Harris)?

I assume in both cases Rubio and Favors would have to be gone. A trade would likely take extra assets, but might not lock the Jazz up finance-wise as strongly, correct? A trade would also allow them to operate over the cap, right (though I'm a bit fuzzy on the benefits)?

I'm presuming there are enough FAs out on the market that the Jazz figure they could make up for some of the losses from a trade fairly cheaply, but trading would not allow them the moral victory of bringing home a top-flight free agent.

Anyway, kudos to anyone is willing to take the time to lay out the general landscape simply.

The Jazz 'doing their homework' means contacting agents and seeing who they have a realistic chance at getting a meeting with. The 'tampering' is already well underway. If the Jazz make a Conley trade, it means they were told they had very little chance at even getting meetings with anyone they're targeting.

Boston’s most reliable reporter said Kyrie is preparing to sign with Brooklyn.

https://www.bostonherald.com/2019/06/13/is-kyrie-irving-already-gone-sources-say-hes-preparing-to-join-the-nets/

It has seemed from Danny Ainge’s comments last week and the general front office vibe that the Celtics have been very careful to leave a burning candle on the window sill for Kyrie Irving. But that light may be flickering — if, in fact, it hasn’t already been extinguished.

According to a source with ties to Roc Nation, the organization expected to become Irving’s new representative, the All-Star point guard is prepared to sign with the Brooklyn Nets when he becomes a free agent next month. A separate league source told the Herald that his team (not the Celtics) has received the same information and is operating under the belief that Irving wants to join the Nets.

Word is that the Celtics, meanwhile, had not been given any definitive indication from Irving as of Thursday afternoon.

To be fair to the situation, any story involving Irving needs to contain a disclaimer. While the two sources cited in the second paragraph are to be trusted, most anything involving Irving should be seen as a fluid matter. Nothing can be truly settled until a contract is signed, and that cannot take place until the NBA moratorium ends on July 6 at noon Eastern Time. And, as Celtic followers have come to know, Irving remains eminently capable of changing his mind.

I would only because the stigma of “It’s Utah” will linger. But as far as actual Conley. I think he’s nothing to be disappointed in. He will be great with Gobert in the pick n roll and can actually make the defense pay but hitting his shots. Plus he’s a good defender. I think Conley elevates the Jazz. Not my first choice but a good one.

I’m happy with any of Conley, Harris or Russell.

“Stretch 4”s kind of don’t exist anymore. They’re now just 4s, and we’re one of the last teams in the league to figure out that our way of doing things is bad.

What? Its not trending to have 39.6% of your team's salary and 4 roster spots committed to traditional centers?

Ive always thought Kemba was staying. And I still think Charlotte wants to do something aggressive to make him happier about coming back.

If I was the Jazz GM, and I knew I was striking out in FA. Then I would consider #23 and Korver for #12, #36, and one of Charlotte's many crap contracts preferably Marvin Williams.
