What's new

News, rumors and buzz around the draft and free agency

We've not seen this much activity before the draft before... good sign **** gonna be poppin.

Paschal and Carroll would make me happy. Demare’s numbers are similar to Jae’s. Mostly better even. He even looks a little like Jae so would be the perfect replacement.

Carroll just isn't durable... but I'd be happy with that combo... would allow Paschal some PT... now DL... go get em.

Scoring 18 ppg efficiently without a decent PG and then getting to play with a triple double guy who moves the ball ….yes I think they will be

He's kind of an iso guy... not sure he provides a lot of synergy there.

Demarre Carroll should be Utah’s top target in free agency. Would fill the same role as Crowder did, but is a slightly better shooter.
I’ve had a bit of a closer look at him and I’m not convinced he and Crowder aren’t the same person. Even their jump shots look similar.

It's not synergy that Dallas needs moreso than a 3rd scorer. With Doncic ,Porzingas and Warren there will be a lot of points put up and in the Western Conference that's needed. Of course they don't have him yet .

Offer him the room exception day 1 of free agency. I think it is enough to get it done.

I think we may have to waive Favs though... we have some holes to fill... backup 2 or 3... pg could be an issue if Neto and Exum continue to be dead all the time. I'm all for Caruso, but I doubt he's a guy we pursue.

Not sure we can get anything useable at the 2 or 3 with a minimum contract.

How much will Garrett Temple get? that might be my room exception candidate. Can guard 1-3 and can fill in as we need. Great defender, solid shooter, amazing guy.

Waive Favors and get one of the 25+ guys we've talked about. I don't care who, just get one. Then, if we're fortunate enough, pick from Danny Green or Trevor Ariza. More realistically, go get DMC, Caruso, Temple, Ed Davis, Tyson Chandler, Seth Curry, etc. kind of guys and call it a summer.

More to come.

Part 2

Assuming the Jazz either waive Favors to make cap space, or pick up his option and trade him who are some stretch/playmaking 4’s the Jazz could go after? Which one would you like the Jazz to get most?
Depends on what's available to them in free agency. A lot of this is going to be done in real time.

I’m a Favors fan. I love the starting 5 now with him there. You think it’s more likely the Jazz keep him thanks to the trade? DL was pretty firm on believing in the Rudy/Derrick front court.
The Jazz absolutely love Favors. That being said, they are going to weigh their options in the first few days of free agency.

Would you say this offer was “better” than Utah’s offer at the deadline last season?
Yes, because Crowder and Korver weren't on the table in February

1) Do you think the Jazz consider waiving Favors for two quality depth pieces (e.g. Trevor Ariza plus Garrett Temple)?
2) Which Jazz role players will benefit most from playing with Mike Conley?
1) It could be a possibility, depending on what is available
2) Shooters who can defend

If the Jazz do buy back into the early second round, do you think they’ll do it before the draft hoping someone they like is still around or are they more likely to wait and see if someone falls to a range they can get to?
Can go either way. A lot of that is done in real time. Example: The Mitchell trade

Any chance the Jazz work their way into the first round tonight?
Very very slim

Do you think the Jazz have a better shot at getting the best undrafted prospects on our summer league team now that we have a few roster spots available? May be a chance to find a Van Fleet, Wes Matthews.
Yes. Absolutely. This is a great point

Are the Jazz currently in talks for trading up or is that something that comes up later?
A lot of that happens during the draft. They have a willingness to move up and are looking for opportunity

Chance of the Bulls trading up?
Not sure. I know a ton of teams are trying to get that No. 4 spot

Do we still have the 4 million dollar trade exception that we got in the Korver trade with Cleveland?
Yes. Have that until December

Any word on what Memphis plans to do with Crowder?
Not yet. Should be interesting

Is Vince Carter a realistic target for the Jazz?
No. Not realistic

Do you think this trade pushes Korver into retirement?
No. I think it pushes him to Los Angeles where he will play for the Lakers (my opinion)

Would Jazz prioritize a shooting wing or a shooting 4 with the MLE? Not think of any names in particular, just position.
I think they will prioritize best available, as long as he can shoot and defend

Can you see the jazz trading up for one of Philadelphia’s pics in the second round?
I wouldn't be shocked....

I am reading conflicting reports... does Conley have an Early termination option on his contract... is he possibly going to leave after one season? If he does excercise his ETO, does the Jazz still have his Bird rights?
He does, but very very very small chance he leaves 30 million on the table, so count on him picking it up, unless he absolutely hates his experience....

Who is Utah’s closing 5?
Ask me when the roster is set....but right now I would say Conley, Mitchell, Ingles, O'Neale, Gobert…...but long way to go yet

Wouldn’t the jazz target someone who can play right away in the draft?
Yes. They want someone who can come in and play instantly

If Jazz are trying to move up tonight, what assets do you think they would include? Just their late 2nd and cash? Or any future picks?
Future second round pick and cash

would the jazz be intererested in JaMycheal or Noah Vonleh? i think they'd be good midlevel targets
Green, yes, Vonleh, no

What about Kevin Love in Utah? 1) is itpossible? 2) do the Jazz have interest?
Not possible. They no longer have the assets

When you say the Jazz need shooting & defense, a lot of us assume that means a stretch 4 that can defend. Is it possible to move Joe and/or Royce to play stretch 4 minutes if the Jazz get a 3 & D player that plays the 2/3? I didn't realize that Royce and Jae were very similiar is hieght and weight.
Royce can play the stretch four for - ahem - stretches....Ingles isn't a stretch four at all. Doesn't rebound well enough at that spot

So was the jazz the leader for Harris?
I think so

When you say "future second rounder and cash" being used to potentially trade up, does that mean they want to keep 53 this year as well?
Not sure. They possibly could include 53 as well. Depends on what other teams ask

It seems like Conley was most effective with shooting big men on the floor with him (Gasol, Jackson Jr.) to play a trailing forward. He would drive, and just kick it out to Gasol above the break on fastbreaks. Don't you think Portis is the perfect fit for that style?
Portis isn't likely an option for the Jazz...He's a restricted free agent, and not sure why Washington would allow him to walk

If the Jazz did renounce Favs to go after Harris (or another FA), could they turn around & re-negotiate a new contract with him? If that is legal, is it feasible?
No. They would no longer have his bird rights, which means they would have to be under the cap to offer him a contract. Simply put, if the Jazz renounce Derrick, he's gone. There's no coming back

There is a rumor out there that Otto Porter has been made available in trade talks. Have you heard any rumblings of this and if so would the Jazz be interested?
Haven't heard.....He's a good player, tho, so if I were the Jazz I would at least explore

The crazy thing about this draft, is it seems like the player the Jazz had their eyes on at 23 could very well be available around 40-53. Is that the vibe around the league?
Great point. That's exactly how the Jazz feel

I think the value in FA is in the guys that are clearly better than minimum dudes but not quite MLE types... we have roles and space to get a few... I think it could be a successful strategy. Could also land a bigger piece like Lamb then add a couple other pieces.

I think Conley will help everyone in the starting group including Favs, but our depth will be an issue with that amount tied up in Favs. Is he a better trade chip than the mess of other players?

I'm not convinced Favs is back.

You sir are a hero... many thanks.

What’s the next big trade u see happening?
Bradley Beal will be somebody everybody has an eye on. Chris Paul is still someone people will keep watch on with how weird this Houston situation appears from the outside. Derrick Favors will probably be on the move at some point. I think the next big name though that actually gets moved is Gordon Hayward.
