How To Use Burks' TPE

The trade as announced is contingent on us getting below the cap. It's perhaps possible we could rework details with Memphis and restructure it somehow, not sure.

Only way is if Indiana will do a three way trade for Rubio... then we use their space. We'd have to make it worth their effort... and I am not sure the numbers or year would line up.

Also, we are like 300-400k away from having enough space to do the trade as it has been reported. Not sure if that mean Bradley will be moved with no $$$ coming back, or Neto gets waived, or if we really aren't keeping Favs but want to make it look like we can if we want to (for trade value purposes).

The salary cap number hasn't actually been set yet as far as I know. So neither we nor the Jazz actually know anything on that fine of detail at this point.

K... but where it is projected I believe we are short... if anything it will come in lower... its a manageable amount and maybe we send Bradley too to make it work... just something interesting that I don't think anyone has talked about.

If TPE disappear, it's just another clear way rich teams prosper over under the cap teams.

Think about it - a team over $109 gets a $9+ exception. A team under $109 gets a $4.7 exception. What kind of stupid logic is that?

Incredibly stupid. I had this exact conversation with a co worker yesterday.
You get punished for being smarter and more frugal about your finances.

I'm pretty sure the players association pushed for that. They want teams to spend money on players.

The Jazz should have it available until they renounce cap holds - the problem then is making sure to have enough cap space to complete the Conley deal with space if they use any more. Another reason they were unlikely to trade for a 1st round pick yesterday. Their rookie hold would’ve counted against the cap right away. 2nd have be be signed on minimum deals or into exceptions or existing cap space.

A TPE only exists as long as the team is over the cap. I believe that when Rubio's contract (and Thabo et al) comes off the books on 1 July, we go under the cap, and this TPE vanishes. Also, we cant use the TPE before then if the incoming salary would keep us over the cap, as we can only make the Conley trade if we are under the cap.

Yep.

TPE stands for traded player exception, and exceptions are used by teams who are operating above the cap. Therefore, you can either use cap space or your exceptions, but not both.

Except for the exception to the exceptions (room), which the NBA added to just try and confuse the situation even more.
