Then, out of nowhere, he turns his head, and I swear to you, he looked me dead in the eyes from all the way across the court.

Dead in my eyes.

It was like a movie. I froze. Everything kind of hit me at once, and it was like, Ohhhh, snap.

That was my Welcome to the League moment. I just kept telling myself, “Keep him in front of you. Do not let him dunk on you and yell in your face.”

Editor’s note: The first game, when Don walked out onto the floor and they announced his name, all the fans were standing up and cheering, and I was just sitting in my seat with my head in my hands, sobbing. I just couldn’t believe that we were really here. All those sleepless nights wondering, “Are we doing the right thing?” We made it here.

We <3 Mrs. Mitchell.

Could there ever be a superstar as grounded as Donovan Mitchell? In this day and age, how does he even happen?

I can't wait until he hoists the championship trophy. No one has deserved it more in a long long time. And I'm talking about his mom.

If Donovan said his mom needed some help taking out the garbage, about 300 Jazz would be booking airline tickets within 5 minutes.

There are some great parts in there about Utah and him wanting to leave a legacy. Also his mother is very happy he's here and not L.A., NY, Maimi etc.
I put money on him being a lifer and having a statue.

The attitude towards Utah is changing around the NBA - because of Gobert and Mitchell.

Mike Conley is the first drop in the bucket. I’ll be very interested in seeing which guys will be interested in playing here in the near future. Looking at guys who take minimum contracts, or less money to be here will be a big indicator.

It’s nice having him and his mom talk so positively about Utah, and the fans here.

Wow, words cannot express how much I love that article. Donovan's writing was fantastic, but his mom stole the show. I love LOVE LOVE her.

Her Kenny Rogers story had me literally laughing out loud. Donovan's story about his sister's text brought tears to me eyes. And this quote from his mom is one of the greatest things I've read all year:

Donovan is not going to like this, but I am going to be a mom here and get very emotional about my son. I think you can tell by now that I am not very impressed by all the basketball stuff. I still don’t really know the X’s and O’s, or a lot of the players’ names. What makes me really happy is when I hear the stories about Donovan going out of his way to help people that he runs into in real life — whether it’s the kid at the Apple Store who needed to fix his phone, or the person at the grocery store who was counting change, or his push to make his signature shoe be affordable so everyone can have a pair. All these stories come out about Donovan helping people, without ever making a big deal about it or posting it on social media. I know he’s going to be so embarrassed about me mentioning it now. But when I hear those stories, that’s when I know I did a good job as a mother. Because I raised a son who knows the value of money, who knows how hard it is for some people in this world. That just makes me so proud that I might go ahead and start crying right now, in fact.

That's not even to mention quotes such as these:

Donovan: If you watch the [draft day] tape back, Maria Taylor from ESPN tells me that I’ve been traded to the Jazz, and you can literally see me breathe a sigh of relief. It’s no disrespect to Denver at all, but it was a much better fit in Utah, and I absolutely fell in love with the city during my workout with them.

Mom: Honestly, I was thinking like any mother of a 20-year-old boy. I was just praying, Keep my baby far away from New York, L.A. and Miami! He needs a stable environment! I was very pleased with Utah. Very pleased.

Donovan: I know guys in the league say, “Oh yeah, I love X, Y, Z city.” But man, I genuinely love Utah. The way that the city embraced me as a rookie is something that I didn’t even think was possible.

I had some coworkers ask me yesterday who are my 5 favorite athletes are all time regardless of sport. I told him Stockton (I was short as a kid, rooted for Stock and he's why I'm a Jazz fan). Randall Cunningham (MNF play in 1988 and I was hooked), David Palmer (Alabama legend from the 90's), LeBron (don't attack me - I think he's comprehensive player, is a great man off the court, and endures way too much hate while holding his head high).

And I said lastly, and y'all are gonna think I'm crazy because he's only been around a couple years, but Donovan Mitchell. I said he's extremely talented, but extremely humble. Great man on and off the court.

Then today, this article comes out reaffirming everything I was trying to say. I've never been more excited about a professional athlete than #45. I'm so glad he plays for our Utah Jazz.

I just appreciate both of their courage and strength to even put this story out there. This stuff is personal, close to the heart, and the real journey. This stuff is not easy to let the world know about, and yet that is exactly what endears them to Utah fans, and NBA fans everywhere tbh. I couldn't be more happy we have DM and DM's mom and sister here. He definitely rubs off on the other players, coaches, and pretty much everyone he interacts with. Who doesn't like him, seriously.

Just got around to reading this. Wow. Truly fantastic. I have texted the link to just about everyone I know who I think will appreciate the read -- including several people who aren't even basketball fans. What an amazingly-grounded warm human being who just happens to have found the perfect basketball home. Thanks for sharing, TSoW! Just when I thought I couldn't appreciate Donovan more than I already do . . . . If he's not a lifer in a Jazz uni, something went terribly wrong.

Those same experts have Lakers,Warriors,Rockrts,Nuggets as better teams. Utah not even in the top ten Vegas odds for next year's chip. Only delusional jazz fans think they are a contender. BtW Jokic also better superstar. Not a media whore like a certain player in thinking about.

Gobert scared no one. No GM would even give up much for him but y'all think he a superstar.okay. Jazz maybe win a playoff series next year, that's their Ma x potential, not a Finals game or even a WCF game.

Donovan Mitchell sure does like to keep his name in the media. Give me a star like Joki C who is getting better instead of trying to be a celebrity
