What's new

You're the GM this offseason. What do you do?

If the Jazz can put a rotation on the floor with Conley / Mitchell / Royce / Tobias / Gobert, plus Exum and guys like Garrett Temple or Ed Davis coming off the bench, that's a pretty nice two-way line-up.

Well, what happened is that Gordon Hayward left the Jazz in free agency and prevented the Jazz from signing another offensively skilled player. So DL pivoted, decided that defense was our identity, and he brought in guys like Royce, Thabo, Udoh and Jerebko. Prior to that, the Jazz had offensive talent like Hayward, Hill, Joe Johnson and Rodney Hood. That first year after Hayward left, the Jazz's offense was like 22nd in the league, and we started relying almost entirely on Joe Ingles and Donovan Mitchell.

We've been recovering from that ever since.
I know, mean more since then. Because we became a very thin offensive team but really good defensive team, we felt that we needed to just keep doubling down on defense at the expense of offense. For example, we did nothing to address offense last summer, despite the fact that we knew (or should have known) that it was a problem, regardless of our hot ending.

The challenge is to improve the offense without hurting the defense much, if at all. That's not easy to do, and the moves we make have to be surgically precise. That's one reason Conley is such an upgrade. He puts another shot creator and 20-pt scorer on the floor without hurting our defense or compromising Mitchell's freedom. The points Conley will add, plus the ball security he brings, puts the Jazz in a higher tier than they were with Rubio.

Yes, but I think when it comes to the question of Favors people tend to panic. Favors isn’t the best perimeter defender, and that’s where most the fours are playing. I think people struggle with the idea of the defense “getting worse” even if it’s negligible in the big picture. I don’t think there’s going to be a drastic drop off that f we have Harris, or Niko, or whoever.

I think the Jazz have more or less come to the conclusion that they can't become a 60-win team if they pay a guy like Favors $18M, don't use him more in the offense, and don't play him consistently more than 25 minutes. Ultimately, Gobert and Favors get in each other's way, and we don't have the cap room to pay both of them their market rate.

To be really competitive now, a team can't afford to have two non-shooters on the floor at the same time. OKC has this problem too.

I think the net rating with Crowder on the floor has been better than with Favors on the floor. This was also the case with Joe Johnson at the 4. Net rating considers both offense and defensive rating. The Jazz know they can maintain a very similar defensive rating without Favors and have the potential to improve their offensive rating by several points. Jae Crowder is known as a fairly middling offensive player. It wouldn't be too hard to upgrade from him. He was just a value contract.

In order for the Conley trade to work as constituted, they would have to renounce all rights to Udoh. I also get the sense that he feels a little burned by how the last two years played out for him here. He was an incredible luxury to have as a 3rd string center.
If he is willing to re-sign for the minimum though, the Jazz could keep him

I hope the Jazz don't waive him now. Just to see you all bitch and moan and pretend that you know better than the FO. Lol at all of you that think the defense won't be affected. You are lying to yourself if you think that. I get that in "your opinion" Favs doesn't fit. But that's on the offensive side of the ball. What about the defensive end, where he does fit? With that said, the question becomes, what's more important to the coaching staff and the front office? Do you trade a #1 defense for a tad bit better Offense? And I do mean "a tad bit". I'm just going to trust the Front Office to make the right decision based on the fact that THEY know what THEY'RE talking about...

Ultimately the situation with Favors is a catch 22. I'm positive that the Jazz have had a lot of the same discussions internally that some people have posted here about why we should move on from Favors. I think they see that paying him 16/17 million a year to essentially play backup minutes isn't ideal. I think that they also see that the offense needs more pop than last years team provided and that better spacing is critical. But the catch is finding a move that actually makes us better if we let Favors go. Because despite the issues we have with Favors.... he's still really freaking good. And I think the addition of Conley complicated the decision further because Conley upgrades our offense and our spacing more than any addition we've ever made to this current core. So they have to ask themselves if adding Conley is enough of answer for our offense that it makes keeping Favors work for us or not.

I'm interested to see the decision they come too. A lot of us feel like the decision is black or white. But I see why it's tough.

would Old-School rep this.

This is a fun game, I think I keep Favors and try and sign Avery Bradley and Wilson Chandler for vet min. Then use the Room exception on JaMychal Green.

But I also think those prices are off on a bunch of players but wow would that be great to get those three and keep who we have.

Conley Exum Neto
Mitchell Bradley
Ingles Royce Chandler
Favors JaMychal
Gobert Favors Bradley

Fill in our our 2nds and whoever else makes the team.

This is a good example though that lots of good players will go for much less. Teams will tie their cap up quickly with the big names. Lots of good players for cheap on here.

Also I know Middleton will get the max but that is a bad contract. 4 years 190 million is way too much for a borderline all-star.

I like Kevon Looney as a backup 4/5. He actually has some shooting ability that he didn't get to show at Golden State, imo. I also like Terrence Ross as instant offense.

Something that Favors and Gobert frontcourt allows us is to be able to not be so much exposed by stretch big, especially stretch-5, as we could see Favors getting them outside (or if they force Gobert out, there's still Favors rim protection).

Not as if we are trying to be able to face (on the playoffs) teams that may have AD, Jokic, Gasol, Lopez...
