News, rumors and buzz around the draft and free agency

@infection Look what ya boy is doing... going back on his word to join the Knicks...

The good news is he will likely be moved in season if he's an expiring on the Knicks.

man, can someone please explain to the knicks that you only have 48 minutes a game for each position, and pf is not an exception
They’re buying into the Bucks version of “tall ball” just play as many PFs as possible. Somebody is getting moved at the deadline.

anyone who was advocating for Marcus Morris is.................... hopefully ashamed of themselves.

Pretty rough... they traded Bertans to get him (in part). He just didn't show up for the physical a few days ago apparently. This is a rough look for him... its a business... I imagine if a team did this, without some injury discovered in the physical, that the player's union would be all over that team.

Not sure why NY is doing this... gives you a ****** name and what's the huge benefit... they have 14 power forwards... it's not like it'd be some amazing trade asset.

Not if you play 4 PFs at a time!

Looks like Heat and OKC might use Cleveland as a 3rd team for the Westbrook deal: https://www.google.com/amp/s/heavy.com/sports/2019/07/heat-russell-westbrook-trade-tyler-herro/amp/

"Sylvander also explains that Presti “isn’t being pressured to get back assets” in a Westbrook trade, but only salary cap relief, which also helps the Heat’s outlook."

I still think Exum and some minor picks and we get back Winslow is absolutely perfect. Saves Miami and OKC money. Gets us a player at a more needed position while also giving Exum a fresh start.

So they start
DSJ
RJ
Morris? Knox?
Randle
Robinson

Bring Portis, Taj, Bullock off the bench. I think Knox' best position is PF... This makes sense for exactly no one.

Why not just go into the season with extra space if you aren't paying Bullock... that might be more valuable than handing out 15M to Morris.

We'd have more money plus a starting spot. I don't know what JaMychal Green's priorities are, but I do find it funny how often we conflate something not happening with the idea that it couldn't have happened.

I recall debates about how important Favors was despite only getting 23 minutes and not closing games. Green played 23 mpg last year.

I do think we are in need of a bigger body that can play the 4, defend, and hit the three. There will be matchups where we will need that. And, yes, times where we will have to close with that on the floor. Not often, but a lot more often than the Favors/Gobert tandem closed. We lost a lot of games last year where we could secure a defensive rebound. Aside from Gobert, we didn't have rebounders on the floor because Favors didn't close due to spacing issues. Green rebounds just as well as Favors, but connects on 40.3% from deep on just under 5 attempts per 36. He plays defense.

If we don't want to view him as that important of a piece because he won't close games, then fine. But realize the comparison is Exum, who isn't closing games, and is valuable as a hypothetical.
I find it funny how often people assume we could just get someone. It's just a maybe.

The green we have provides what you described. We can also play one of our other bigs if we need to for certain matchups like Davis at PF.

Exum has potential to be a game changer. That's the difference. He potentially provides something others cannot. JaMychal Green is redundant to our Green.

Favors also provided something no one on the roster provided at times. JaMychal doesn't. He's just a nice role players that would be nice in addition but not a game changer.

I don't think it saves enough and I think it'd cost a first... which we can't really give a first until 2024 because of the protections on the pick we gave Memphis.

I think they could dump Winslow into Dallas' space and get better seconds than we could give. I would do an Exum plus seconds for Winslow, but I think we aren't giving enough value.

There’s an easy way around that tbh. Go to Memphis and tweak the protections on the pick that they will get.

2020 goes to Memphis if it’s 5-14. Goes to OKC if it’s 15-30.

2021 gets switched to a potential pick swap with Memphis (with some sort of top 10 protections) to align with the Ted Stepien Rule.

2022/23/24 pick (that’s likely to convey to the Grizzlies) has the same protections as currently stipulated. If (for some crazy reason) the pick gets conveyed to Memphis in 2020, the 22/23/24 pick goes to OKC with lottery protection for 3 years.

Conley, Mitchell, O’Neale, Bogdanovic, Jingles, Winslow, Gobert and Davis would be a really solid playoff rotation. Hopefully Niang or Mudiay can show out enough to earn some minutes as well.

That’s not easy and why would Memphis agree to a swap instead of just getting a pick in 2021... what are you giving them? It still ends up being a 2024 1st because Memphis won’t just take less for ***** and giggles... there is a reason they negotiated those protections... it’s really specific and I doubt they’d give up something for nothing.

It’d be easier to say we give a first 2 years after that one conveys... which would basically be 2024.

Could bring Demarre Carroll back into play, but I think Tony Jones said Jazz not interested
The DeMarre Carroll deal wasn’t dependent on Morris coming there. They worked out a sign and trade between Washington, SA and Brooklyn for that. Even if Morris backs out, they still have their full MLE - just not a lot of options for using it. Could split it up to use on two players. Kinda like having two of the Room exceptions.

That’s possible. I’m sure it would cost something, but there have been instances of teams adjusting protections. If it were me, I’d offer to remove all protections on the 2022 pick. It either conveys to Memphis in 2020 or 2022. Take 2021 out of the equation completely. That would increase the value without significantly adjusting the structure of the deal.
