Trump’s Dividing of America

None of these opinions by "The Squad" actually started off with any of them saying "America stinks!" Did they? I don't think each started with "America stinks!", and I don't think they hate America. They are on a side that believes America is going in the wrong direction. Sometimes those Americans who stand up and point out what they regard as flaws in need of addressing, do so because they actually love America. Which is not to say conservatives do not love America, but that cartoon, and the president's tweets are deliberately designed to "otherize" those with different opinions. It's a deliberate attempt to say these congresswomen, and anybody who supports them, is un-American. And this is the crux of the problem. The president and his followers would "otherize" not just refugees, but their fellow Americans.

And I can just as easily point out, and I have, that Trump's tweets this past Sunday were as profoundly un-American as it gets. And it's telling that so many foreign leaders have spoken up and pointed out how disgusted they are with Trump's tweets, and how much those tweets diminish both Trump's office and American values. That cartoon is ridiculous in missing the point, and distorting those congresswomen.

Is this really the best we can do? Is this kind of cruelty really due to our border patrol not having enough resources? Remind me again how AOC was wrong about these agents?

At a Border Patrol holding facility in El Paso, Texas, an agent told a Honduran family that one parent would be sent to Mexico while the other parent and their three children could stay in the United States, according to the family. The agent turned to the couple's youngest daughter — 3-year-old Sofia, whom they call Sofi — and asked her to make a choice.

"The agent asked her who she wanted to go with, mom or dad," her mother, Tania, told NPR through an interpreter. "And the girl, because she is more attached to me, she said mom. But when they started to take [my husband] away, the girl started to cry. The officer said, 'You said [you want to go] with mom.' "

Tlaib's comments in context. Clearly she was talking about the calming feeling she gets when she thinks about the sacrifices her Palestinian ancestors made when creating a safe haven for the Jewish survivors of the holocaust.

The pattern continues to mimic Hitlers rise. Hitler was a master at "otherizing". Germans are still befuddled and embarrassed that it could happen to them.

One interesting contrast is that Germany was dealing with post WW1 humiliation and economic collapse(starvation, disease), which sowed the seeds of nationalism. We have nothing close to that to blame. One of the important seeds to Trump was our election of a black President.

So pointing out crappy policies is like Hitler now?

Wait... are you suggesting that Trumpers on this board are either purposely lying to spew disinformation about what Democratic Congresswomen actually said or unbelievably ignorant? I’m shocked I tells ya totally shocked.

Correct

And the rich conservative ruling class laid down, enabling Hitler because:

A. They could use him for their own (selfish) financial benefit.

B. The rich conservative ruling class thought they could control Hitler. Until they couldn’t. I know the Mercer’s, Kochs, Adelsons, etc think these tax cuts and judges are worth it. But the long-term damage they’re enabling will come back ultimately to bite them in the ***.

Until he took over the political, military, and media organizations. You can see that happening right now with Trump. He has politicized nearly every aspect of our lives, including holidays now. And this isn’t even limited to Hitler.

All autocrats follow a similar pattern. Create an identity crisis, find an outsider to rally against, gaslight, become the “tough guy”, and kill the democratic process in government of multi-parties and multiple views. His recent attacks on Democrats who have criticized his administration is just more evidence of him exerting authoritarian power. Rather than listen to their concerns he told them to leave the country.

Sadly, I don’t think we have learned as well from history as we should.

I don't really want to drive a narrative that compares Trump to Hitler in any kind of direct, or "two peas in a pod" way. I just felt, right from the start, that in times of severe economic dislocation, and when culture wars reflect a struggle between traditionalists and "moderns" or progressives, that is the time when a cynical demagogue can arise and attain power.

And I think we can see parallels in the fears and anxieties being played off by cynical leaders of such a type. For instance, German humiliation post WWI=Trump's refrain that all the world is taking advantage of America. America as victim. And the economic dislocation of the Great Depression=economic dislocation of globalization. So I do see similarities in the conditions present in German and American society that preceded the appearance of authoritarian nationalism. The issues Trump uses to drive resentment on the part of his base do bare comparison with the resentments driven in 1930's Germany.

Both Hitler and Trump represent authoritarianism and extreme nationalist views. And both "otherized" groups so their supporters were provided a focus for their anger. It's these things that caused me to be alarmed by the appearance of Trump. I have never said that, for instance, genocide is next on our agenda. I am saying that demagogues are a danger in a democracy. Leaders that beguile people by knowing how to tell them what they want to hear, when they want to hear it, namely at a time when those people are experiencing fear, anger, and anxiety in the face of societal and cultural change, do not always have their nation's best interest in mind.

A demagogue knows how to take the pulse of that segment of society, and marshal their support.

We have a resilient democracy, I suspect Trump has changed our political discourse for the long term, but I hope some kind of actual civil war is not the end result.

No, it's pointing out the fact that they have a similar approach to government -- authoritarian rule, and because of Hitler's immoral stance on the Jews, it led to the Holocaust. Similarly, Trump has an immoral stance to minorities and immigrants which is leading to his administration doing horrible things to them. Who knows where that will take him if we don't kick him out soon.

What a load of hyperbolic bull. Trump is Hitler? Pointing out the garbage policies that the "Squad" wants is what Hitler did?

You guys are ridiculous.
