It can be anyone they want. They’re just on the hook for any guaranteed money they give to them, or on an existing contract (via trade or waivers). The last few guys typically are generally expected to end up in the G-league as affiliate players.

Give him a small deal with a partial guarantee and let the young guys fight for a spot. If he shows out, you keep him. If not. . . cut your losses.
