(Possible Headline) Donovan Mitchell signs w/ NY Knicks?!!

“Donovan Mitchell has agreed to a three year $136 million deal with the New York Knicks, league sources tell ESPN.” AAAAAHHHH!!!! WTF DM?!!!

As Jazz fans, I think we’re all terrified of this moment and deep down know it will happen at some point if Dolan ever gets his head out of his @$$ and/or sells the team. So how long until Donovan leaves SLC for his hometown team (or the bright lights of some other major market) not dominated by white mountains, racists and religious wackadoodles? It’s cool the city gave DM a bridge and he just said he loves Utah and doesn’t desire a big market, but is it 5 years more until he’s tired of SLC and the lack of the national exposure he deserves?

Just look at what happened with Kawhi (I was a HUGE SAS fan), Anthony Davis, Paul George, Lebron, Hayward... The NBA so heavily favors the biggest markets, and given recent player empowerment and human nature, I think the days of guys like Timmy/Manu/Tony staying on one team are long gone.

So regardless of the Jazz winning a title or not, how many years are you giving DM before he leaves?

If he leaves, he leaves. It won't be for a lack of effort on Utah's part. Nor do I think Donovan takes a lesser deal elsewhere to get out of the 801. Mitchell is doing well on building his brand here and Utah is surrounding him with talent years ahead of schedule. The fanbase adores him and he seemingly adores Utah. He's more a Dame than a Kawhi.
 
Not a concern at all for me right now and wont be for quite awhile. Would neg this post if possible.
 
I think he is more likely to leave if we win multiple rings, like get the bling and accolades then close things out back at home. That or if we just don't go anywhere. I think if we remain competitive, maybe win a ring, maybe 2, and continue to field a competitive team he'll stay long term.

But my gut tells me he has more character and will likely retire a jazz man.

i mean he’s under contract for two years and restricted when he becomes a free agent... likely signs a five year extension next offseason so I think this thread is a little premature... in seven years we will be at war with the AI robot overlords. None of this will matter.

Will robot AI still be 6’0” and not practice? If so, I still like our chances.

So 2025 then? That’s reasonable. My fear is that DL is human enough (as the most managers of aforementioned teams) to not realize the guy wants out before he says he wants out. Lindsey failed to understand what was happening before selfish, b1tch Gordon left us high and dry. It was particularly in that space that Donovan became the city’s emotional and basketball savior, hence the additional overlove from all of us for DM.

Which is why I was so pissed Lindsey made ZERO moves to improve last year in free agency. And drafted wild child Grayson. He made ZERO attempts to surround Don with better NBA talent. Jazz now have a legitimate shot for two years. Woohoo the clock starts ticking...

Clearly contract commitments don’t mean $hit anymore from superstars’ perspectives. Which is why I pray DM really is who he seems like as a person. And doesn’t change that part of himself.

I do think there is a good chance Donovan one day goes to the Knicks. He seems like the kind of guy to go fix them. However, I think it would be way down the road. Like a 3rd or 4th contract thing after he has either...

A - delivered for us with nothing to regret (like Kawhi in Toronto)
or
B - we completely fail him in some way, shape or form.

One thing about Donovan is that he very transparent. If he is considering such a move, he will let us know well beyond the time. So long as we treat him right, he will stay in Utah. He is not enigmatic like Kawhi or a primadonna like LeBron or lacking social skills like AD. He is more like CP3 who while acerbic has always been upfront about his intentions.
