What's new

(Possible Headline) Donovan Mitchell signs w/ NY Knicks?!!

“Donovan Mitchell has agreed to a three year $136 million deal with the New York Knicks, league sources tell ESPN.” AAAAAHHHH!!!! WTF DM?!!!

As Jazz fans, I think we’re all terrified of this moment and deep down know it will happen at some point if Dolan ever gets his head out of his @$$ and/or sells the team. So how long until Donovan leaves SLC for his hometown team (or the bright lights of some other major market) not dominated by white mountains, racists and religious wackadoodles? It’s cool the city gave DM a bridge and he just said he loves Utah and doesn’t desire a big market, but is it 5 years more until he’s tired of SLC and the lack of the national exposure he deserves?

Just look at what happened with Kawhi (I was a HUGE SAS fan), Anthony Davis, Paul George, Lebron, Hayward... The NBA so heavily favors the biggest markets, and given recent player empowerment and human nature, I think the days of guys like Timmy/Manu/Tony staying on one team are long gone.

So regardless of the Jazz winning a title or not, how many years are you giving DM before he leaves?

I never said Wade was a bad defender. I simply said Donovan potentially is a better defender. Hell, Donovan was drafted as a defender 1st and then we stumbled across his comprehensive skill set.

I'm not sure I see how Donovan is potentially better. So far in their NBA careers, Wade has been a much better defender. Donovan could be good yet, but Wade had just as much potential coming out.

Donovan is old school. Just look at the type of music he likes. And he values loyalty above everything. I think the OP has a very poor read on Donovan’s character. I think it’s highly likely Donovan never hits free agency, at least not for a long time.

I do think there is a good chance Donovan one day goes to the Knicks. He seems like the kind of guy to go fix them. However, I think it would be way down the road. Like a 3rd or 4th contract thing after he has either...

A - delivered for us with nothing to regret (like Kawhi in Toronto)
or
B - we completely fail him in some way, shape or form.

Is Dolan dead by this point?

I'm going to make a bold prediction: not only will Donovan stay in Utah, he'll turn down the super max and sign for less so Utah can keep a contending team together.

I think the pressure he gets to leave will be from Adidas. He's obviously their poster boy now and they'd probably like him to star in a bigger market. But isn't it great he's got his own shoes and gets the joint advertising gig with Marvel? I guess he could let celebrity go to his head. We'll just have to wait and see.

Dolan has been running the Knicks into the ground since 2001. He is a known alcoholic and drug addict and has stated countless times over the last 15 years that he's not selling the team. During his time as an owner he has never done anything right. He couldn't even seal the deal with KD and Irving of who the Knicks were attached to in the media as acquiring during this summers free agency. The Knicks have also spent the last 2 years rearranging their team and team salaries to prepare for this summer's free agency of which they failed at. They have continuously failed over almost 2 decades because of Dolan. "Deep down we know it will happen at some point?" I am more confident that the 2nd coming of Jesus Christ will happen before the day comes that Dolan pulls his head out of his a**!
Dolan count't close a deal with Mitchell it was signed, sealed and delivered by Jesus himself.

Wade was drafted for his defense and known for that coming out of college. He dropped a little because of questions about his offense.

He won defensive player of the year in college.

Donovan's character has NOTHING to do with him staying with the Jazz.

Nothing.

This is straight up crazy talk. Donovan will be like "no thanks, I'd rather not have several tens of millions of dollars more, money that I absolutely deserve due to my impact on the game and my marketability, please pay me less."

Donovan can be the best person on the planet and still expect to get paid his value. We all get that, right?

I've heard way too many people say they think Donovan is so awesome he'll be the one to suggest he get paid less. Welcome to planet earth, that's not how this works, that's not how any of this works.

LeBron and Wade took less to make Miami happen. Durant and Kyrie just took less to make Brooklyn happen.

Anything is possible. I see Donovan taking more than what any other team can give him but not 100% of what we can give him. So let's say max is $30 million plus 5% raises should he sign elsewhere or $30 million plus 8% raises here. I think he signs something like $30 plus 6% or 7% raises.

It's still max. It's still a ton of money. A small gesture like that just seems like his personality.

Unfortunately there are 2 teams in NY and one of them is pretty competently run.

A player taking less isn’t actually unheard of. I just hope by the time that comes around they’ve addressed the super max so it doesn’t impact a teams cap as much as it currently does. The super max will likely be changed by then anyway.

I’m sure Adidas would like it but they have no issues with Dame in Portland and he has one of the best selling NBA players shoe.

Donovan's character has NOTHING to do with him staying with the Jazz.

Nothing.
I mean I agree to an extent, but things surrounding what happens surrounding it when it happens do tell me something about a dude.
