Poor Jazz Roster Construction

While I love a lot of what Lindsey and Zanik did with the Jazz roster this summer (e.g., adding shooting and playmaking with Conley and Bogey, replacing solid backup center play with Davis)... I think they refused to provide any kind of athletic depth at the 4 - the Jazz will be quite short there (Jingles, Bogey, Royce, Green, Niang lol). Defense and rebounding with size and athleticism at that position was not only neglected, it seems it was completely ignored.

Clearly the modern NBA is more positionless and centered on shooting than ever, and traditional power forwards have mostly been replaced by nimble tweeners that can play more on the perimeter. But it’s also about having flexibility with wide varieties of combinations to adapt to one’s opponent. And the Jazz have only one style of 5-man (defensive-oriented and 0% perimeter threat), and only one style of 4-man (undersized, and relatively unathletic shooter). It makes us one-dimensional in that respect IMO.

What small-ball lineup could we ever possibly put out there against the Draymond’s, Horford’s, and AD’s of the NBA? Who on the team can hold against bigger forwards, lock up guards on the perimeter AND protect the rim and crash the boards? A 33 year old Jeff Green??? If you’re depending on him for anything you’ve already lost - that’s why he’s making the min. And the FO spent their final roster spot on ANOTHER non-athletic 6ft8 shooter, this one from a second-rate European league. William Howard very well may be a diamond in the rough, but he’s entirely duplicative of the rest of our 3-4’s.

In addition to the questionable backup PG options, I’m afraid this oversight will be costly at some point this season in their pursuit of a title. That’s compacted with the FO never recognizing the value in leaving a single roster spot open for buyouts/additions. Many teams are way too roster shift-happy, but it takes far too much for this FO to realize a mistake and change ANYTHING midstream.

You can't eat a cake and have a cake. In order to improve our obvious deficiences we had to make some sacrifice. You couldnt get Bogdanovic and keep Favors at the same time. I think everyone sees the potential risk. But how would you adress it? Whom would you get for a vet min in place of Jeff Green? You want a player who can "hold against bigger forwards, lock up guards on the perimeter AND protect the rim and crash the boards". That's a long wish list.
I don't know if leaving open spot on the roster would give us real advantage. Apparently FO believes it s worth to give it to someone and hope we will find another Royce like player. I think anyway we will be able to improve by making some trade if we see a real problem.

Who’s the stretch 4 with size and athleticism who was attainable?

I’ll wait.

And please spare us the Blake Griffin response. Dude misses about 40 games every year outside of last season and even if that wasn’t an outlier, we don’t know he was available, didn’t have the assets to get him anyway, and even if we had, it would’ve completely gutted our roster, leaving us the thinnest team in the league.

I have no choice but to ask the question, why are you choosing right now to be frustrated, and is this post a joke? You criticize the most successful off-season in Jazz franchise history. Where were you when we traded 2 draft picks and a 27 year old Alec Burks for a 37 year old Kyle Korver? Or when Gordon Hayward spent two years hinting that he was going to leave the Jazz for Boston and we ended up letting him walk for absolutely nothing! Bypassing multiple opportunities to recover talent for our investment which instead we got nothing for! Where were you then?? Now you want a voice?? Now you have questions???

You ask what lineup would we be able to put up against Draymond, Horford, and AD? It's called a Stifle Tower, or we bring in Ed Davis and let him go to work. We don't need a power forward to stop them. We've failed at advancing deep in the playoffs because of our lack of putting the ball in the basket and we've fixed our problem while not taking a dip in defense.
The real question is, How are the other teams in the NBA going to deal with a Utah Jazz team that's at least 2 deep stuffed with talent at every position including players like, Mitchell, Conley, Gobert, Bogdanovic, Ingles, and Davis?
Why am I explaining this to you? Better yet, Why are you spending 90% of your time on less than 10% of the problem?? LMAO, this is the roster that you decide to become worried about the Jazz future!!!??? Are you ok!!??? LMAO!!!!

Mr Slapper. Thank you.

Jeff Green chose to come to the Jazz over the L.A. Lakers, so let's give him a standing O for doing what no player has ever done in NBA history. Chose the Utah Jazz over the Lakers. What's wrong with a 33 year old?? He's not a 38 year old Kyle Korver that we gave up 2 draft picks for and Alec Burks, I never heard you talk about that one.
I'm sure you're probably 18, and 33 seems ancient. I'm 36 and I know I could still clean someone's clock if I had to, young or old. (You may not get that metaphor, ask someone who was born before 1988 what it means).
We're not going to need someone to chase our offensive rebounds/misses, because we got guys that can put the ball in the freaking basket!!! Besides we're still going to be fine. We replaced Favors with Ed Davis! Do you know what this guy can do!!???
Ok cupcake, it's past your bedtime. Put on your footie pajamas and go to sleep. When you wake up, try to not say as many stupid things as you did the day before.

Jarrell Brantley tho.

Athletic.
Big wingspan.
Big body.

Plus a guy like Royce who is athletic. Plus a guy like Bojan who is a scoring 4 with toughness. Plus Niang who is a sharp shooting 4. Plus Jeff Green who is an overall athlete at the 4 with size. Plus William Howard who is like a bigger Niang.

I wouldnt call all these dudes one dimensional duplicates of each other.

I’ve kinda only skimmed this, and while I acknowledge the lack of a starting quality 4 is a weakness, I’ll just leave this here:

I think we have done quite well. You can't always just "throw the most talented guys out there" and let them figure it out. The thing with us is our top guys all have value without the ball... good shooting, good defenders, so I think the talent will build. I'm prepared for nights we don't rebound well and drop a game or two because of it, but I think we win 55+ games and I am more and more excited about our chances.

We have backup pg issues potentially... but you can fill some roles during the season...Bucks added Hill, Niko, during season...Raps added Gasol during season... like we can make some low key additions to the roster with buy out guys if we have an obvious role/opening. We are super solid top 7 and have guys that can fill roles like Green, Niang as 8/9th men. If we are healthy during the playoffs we are a problem.

The only cherry on top for the offseason would have been Caruso and Marcus Morris.
