What's new

A Nobel Prize in Medicine was Awarded Today...

I don't have a lot to say about that, but it's sad. It's sad that we're gonna talk about all the political BS we talk about every day and most of us don't care about any of the details of the Nobel Prize in Medicine.

Simone Biles did some crazy stuff in gymnastics, some of it is stuff she is the only person to have done and has now done it again, and it's going to be named after her. It's absolutely amazing and beautiful. Human gymnastics has been elevated to a new level. But we're not talking about her, there's no thread about her.

Anyway... Back to politics...

What if you don’t believe in science? Or medicine?

Getting the right amount of oxygen into a cell can be important for certain therapies.
I understand it has applications in developing new cancer treatments.

“The Canadian scientist James Peebles has been awarded half of the 9m Swedish kronor (£740,000) prize for his theoretical discoveries about the evolution of the universe.”

What is a theoretical discovery? Isn’t that just a guess that something is out there?

I guess he guessed and he was right ;-) in another article it's more detailed:

Winnipeg, Canada-born James Peebles was honoured for his contributions to the understanding of the evolution of the Universe and Earth's place in the cosmos.

With others, he predicted the existence of cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation, the so-called afterglow of the Big Bang.

By studying the CMB, scientists have been able to determine the age, shape and contents of the Universe.

"Cosmic background radiation was discovered in 1965, and turned out to be a goldmine for our understanding of how the Universe developed from its early childhood to the present day," said Mats Larsson, chair of the Nobel physics prize committee.

"Were it not for the theoretical discoveries of James Peebles, the wonderful high-precision measurements of this radiation over the last 20 years would have told us almost nothing."

Did she win a Nobel prize for gymnastics? So confused.

The Nobels are great, bunch of winners have worked at my work, used to walk past the medal every day which is on display in one of the labs.

I don't know what your job is but I hope you're not a guinea pig..

Hence, theoretical.

Perhaps a guess no one else has made, yet supported by current understandings and borne out by experiments.

Maybe the name of the website should give you a clue, GF. Go to a gymnastics forum. Maybe there's an AMA site as well.

Today Justin Trudeau won a second term as Canada's PM.

A new Emperor took the throne in Japan.

Who knew?
