Hero Ball

We do have a great second option, but it's not Rudy. You need your second option to be able to score from anywhere. Bogey's waving hi.
I don't know. Isn't your big man down low good for a 70% scoring percentage? Highest percentage shot in b-ball is big man down low. I ain't no Red Holzman, but it's kind of obvious the big man down low is a pretty stout option.

You have to take into account the ball travelling to the player. Neither Bogey nor Royce would have had a truly open shot. The respective defenders on those two would have been there in time.

Jeff green is wide open at the time of paint penetration. Giannis with his strides would have made pretty good ground, but it' still at least a semi-wide open shot.

If Mitchell wanted to pass to Royce for example, it could not have been a straight line pass. It would have needed to be a lob over the top, meaning ball travels slower.

EDIT: And to add, there's a clear passing lane to Jeff in the corner, a fast paced pass would have been possible.

EDIT x2: Actually you're right, Royce is open. It would have to take clear knowledge from Donovan that he is open, as he is behind him.

Don only had to look to see he was surrounded. Royce had a clear opening (look again-a pass to Royce causing Royce to slide a foot to Right would leave him wide open with farther for Giannos to recover than Green, and if he did, Green would be wide open...)with Giannis leaning and facing the wrong direction, making it a tough recovery.

One thing my college coach taught us was to look which direction defenders were leaning, and find the open player in the opposite direction. Worked wonders once you built awareness to see it.

No you're completely right, my bad. Royce was open. It would have been a somewhat harder pass to Royce than the corner to Jeff, but Don has made tougher passes than that before. It just shows he doesn't have 'pass' in his mindset whatsoever during that play. It was a completely one track mind. Lopez just made a good play.

^I don't know if it's coach or what, but it seems like late game situations and Mitchell just gets tunnel vision to score it himself which isn't always the best option IMO.

The problem is that we go Iso Mitchell even when he isn't the hot hand. It's just too predictable as he very seldom considers the assist, even to Rudy in those situations.

Basketball is a TEAM game. The idea is to find the open man with the easiest shot closest to the basket and get him the ball. If your point guard can do that you will win most games. If you bury your head in your lap and drive to the basket with eyes wide shut, you will lose most of those games. Finding good 3 point shooters is also key!

Oh my God what some eye roll garbage. Here’s the bottom line everyone. It’s Donovan’s team. It’s Donovan’s future that matters the most to the franchise. You know why he gets the ball isoed every situation like that?.....Because that’s what you do with your star, and despite what some of you seem to think...our guy is still a 23 year old kid going through the growth of becoming the best player he can be. He should get the ball every single time in every situation like that. Period. And whatever decisions he makes is what you live with. Sometimes it will work, sometimes it won’t, but you always go with your best player and your star. Every star has missed shots or made wrong decisions. So honestly....if you have an issue with whatever decision he made last night?......Sorry but stfu. You had no issue with the 6-7 plays before that he made to drag the Jazz back into that game in the last 5 minutes. Pointing out only the negative is just whining BS.

It’s like Lebron in the finals “he should have taken the last shot not passed to Korver who missed”.....y’all will never be pleased if it’s an L despite what decisions made.

But!! New York...

But!! New York...
He’s going to be here for quite a while. His prime will be played here. His future and continued development into the super star he can be is the most vital thing to the franchise. Anyone whining about him playing hero ball needs to stfu. He is the hero the franchise needed, now let him be.

Walt Clyde Frazier is our announcer and he always talks old school about how to handle hero ball situations. Keep it simple -- the hot hand. Make plays for, look for the hot hand. The guy was doing it all game under pressure, why look elsewhere for the final shot?

Odd thing about those final hero ball shots is everybody knows the guy is going to get the ball...yet, they still can make the play and sink the shot. Your best player (or super hot hand for that night) can make those shots. Let them take it. Come on, Kawhi's four bouncer on the rim to win that playoff series...you knew, everybody knew, that was the guy who had to take the shot. It went in.

Hot hand? Mitchell was 7 of 17.

Bojan was 9 of 15.

Mitchell is one of my favorite players, but he seriously needs to improve at getting good shots for his teammates.
He has, basing your opinion off some late clock situations where he absolutely should be doing what he’s doing is ridiculous. He has had some of the most amazing passes and plays for teammates of the season. So let’s stop with the charade over a missed basket after he drug the Jazz through the last 5 minutes of that quarter.

I am ok with Mitchell going hero on the last posession. But he shouldn't do it for the half of the last quarter. Engage Bogey and others more during that time. I am talking in general not specifically the last game.

Okay, so here's the point I'm trying to make: as I said earlier with my reference to Doc Rivers, good coaches have multiple options (and go to players) at the end of games, we have one. And I might add, that one is a 6'1" shooting guard, that to my way of thinking has to work a little harder to get himself open for the shot. (Is there another player at that height in the NBA with a similar usage rate at the end of close games?) And as I said earlier, none of this falls on Mitchell in my view, this is Snyder's coaching scheme. Am I wrong to suggest that this highly respected coach may have some flaws in his designs?

This year, in a very small sample size, we are eighth in close game wins - this is not representative in my view. Last year however, through the course of an entire season of employing our late game Iso Mitchell strategy we came in dead last in close game wins https://www.teamrankings.com/nba/stat/win-pct-close-games?date=2019-06-14 .

Every coach in the same position would do he exact same thing....give your star the ball and let him do what he does. Some of you are just being too impatient with DM. He’s 23.....this is still season 3....and some of you guys expect him to be super star status every second of every game. Don is still developing. And the correct answer for that development is to let him make some mistakes and learn from them. Quin does exactly what every good coach would do. Give the ball to your potential super star talent and let him make mistakes, win games, lose games. Let him become what he’s going to be. His playmaking has been great in a lot of situations this season. It’s not going to be perfect every time, but he deserves the opportunity to have the ball EVERY SINGLE LATE GAME POSSESSION. The Jazz hopes of winning games or a title are on how good Donovan becomes not if we lose a game in November to Milwaukee short-handed. You show that dude you have full confidence in his ability to take you there. Quin gives it to him and draws up the play for him every time or let’s him iso and go to work and he should continue to do so every time. What’s good for DM is good for the Jazz in the long run.

Ok. I hope ur saying this couse u got only one eye. Bb is team game(exept u got Janis in team),otherwise pass the fricking ball if u cant get decent look..
He got a decent look like 7 out of 8 possessions in those last 5 minutes so....

The fact remains that we finished dead last in close game wins last year, and that our designated late-game iso player measures a mere 6'1" tall making it more difficult to get his shot off than say a Lebron or a Giannis. We need more wrinkles and options down the stretch, and Bogey definitely needs to be in the final equation IMO.
