So I had a weird epiphany tonight. I was using my VR system that I've had since Saturday and I was standing on the side of a mountain bathed in sunlight... at 4:23am.
I think I might be way less crazy in the coming months. This is a weird thing I'm experiencing right now. Could it be this simple?
I doubt it. This is probably the beginning of the end.

So full disclosure, I ordered a Valve Index VR system early December. They were backordered but I got mine a few weeks ago.
VR is weird, for sure.
I've had some interesting experiences but I agree that VR needs some big titles to sell units. I hope Half Life Alyx is that.
I'm playing stuff, but not sure anything is really there to hook me.

**** is weird. It's about 10% poker, 90% spoiled rich kids trying to figure out how to put the lighter in the ducks ***.
I need to write Valve an email to tell them to make a unit that can deliver the correct light to people deprived of daylight. But I had another cool idea that they should make a VR coaster with a cup so that if you're trying to drink a beer (or whatever else) while playing, the cup shows up in your VR headset.

Problem with VR is that it isn't interactive. Video gaming is surprisingly a very social thing, especially at its most popular. Think Fortnite, Overwatch, whatever. MMOs are king right now, and then party games aren't too far behind. Hard for VR to compete with that.
My main game is pokerstars VR, it is 100% interactive. Probably why it's my main game.
But once Half Life Alyx comes out... I don't know. That might be enough.
I had an experience tonight playing pokerstars vr. There was a guy at the table playing guitar and singing live. I guess it's hard to explain, but this was just a random person who was supposed to be playing poker but instead was taking requests and singing and playing guitar. The table was extra into it. It was fun and different. I'd say here was a solid b level guitar player and a c level singer.
One guy was getting so into it he ****ing fell down with his VR headset on. Funny ****. The whole table was dying for like 5 min. You could hear his like "ough" whatever noises he was making as he hurt himself and see his avatar drop.
It's a trip man. Poker has been my most used game, but I've played several others. I also really like Space Pirate Trainer. It's like a VR version of Galactica. Gorn is something I use if I want to burn a few calories. I don't like it because the motion makes me a little sick. I was hoping I would be immune to VR sickness, but man, I'm WAY not. I've never been car sick, six years Navy not once sea sick, even when taking a fairy or whatever from the ship to shore, but put me in a VR driving game or something where I have to move around... Instant motion sickness. Like 0.05 seconds of that and I'm woosey.

I haven't gamed since my early 20s. Doom and this is rekindling my desire. I'm looking to build a pretty spiffy rig (2500$ or so). Time to find some joy in life again.

Don't you basically have to build something on that level to play with a valve index or is it overkill? Also seems that in order to play games like Doom Eternal on high/ultra settings you would need something equivalent to a rtx 2080ti ($1000). I also have a widescreen monitor with 144hz So I just figure I'll go stupid and splurge and hopefully I won't have to upgrade for 5+ years.
You will never know addiction until you fall in love with football manager. New Mount and Blade 2 is out Tuesday, im pumped.
I built a seperate PC specifically for VR. I think I spent about $1600, but I already had a case and very good power supply.
I've always favored the xx70 level Nvidia graphics cards. I've always felt the premium for going with a xx80 or xx80ti was too high. I was concerned that for VR it would be necessary, but I'm playing everything, including Half Life Alyx at the "experimental" 144hz refresh rate and having no problems at all. If I did have issues I was going to try to hold out for the 30xx series of graphics cards which are coming in the next month or two, but I don't think that will be necessary at all.
Specs for the system I built are:
3600X AMD Ryzen 5 (I haven't built an AMD system in at least 15 years but I'm very happy with this one)
RTX 2070 Super (factory overclocked)
2TB NVMe M.2 SSD Intel 660p (not the best, but very good and very affordable for a 2TB true NVMe M.2 SSD)
ASUS AM4 TUF X570 Plus motherboard
16GB (2x8) 3200MHz DDR4 G.Skill Ripjaws V
You could certainly go a little bigger or newer in a few areas. I would wait for the 30 series Nvidia stuff if you're going to spend big on a graphics card, word is that with more competition from AMD the prices will be about the same as the 20 series stuff.
