What is Wrong with Donovan?

Donovan often dribbles too much, forces things, and makes dumb plays like dribbling behind his back when he's double-teamed, leading to turnovers.

Bingo! We won the game despite him having NINE turnovers? The Jazz picking up Clarkston was a fantastic move! Had we kept Rubio and Favors and added Clarkston and the other outside shooter we would be almost impossible to beat in a 4 out of 7 series!

When did we add Clarkston? I thought we let the trade deadline go without a move. Is he from the g league?

Snyder better start pulling Donovan after he commits too many turnovers. Sort of a tough love relationship. That's not gonna fly if it happens in the playoffs. We'd be swept easily if he did that every game.

1:47 left he hit a 16 foot jumper to put Utah up 123-116. He was going to his right, out of bounds and had two defenders on him including Pordingdong, who came to help.

I'd look for it on nba.com but i'm too lazy, lol..

My mistake. I was looking for a bad shot that he missed..... Yes, that was bad shot selection but I'm glad he hit it.

Or frankly get him to stop trying so much iso. It's like that is all he's trying to go, waving off screens and sending people to the corners. It isn't working because teams are bringing the double so quickly when he starts his move. Why doesn't he run a few screen and rolls and get into the lane and dish it off. You know, facilitate and not just play hero ball. Teams have caught on that is what he wants to do now like 80% of the time so they double and he coughs it up. Gotta change that strategy and get everyone involved.

I’m cool with mistakes... DM will get better. The turnovers came in part because he was trying to pass... toggling between aggressive scorer and playmaker is hard. I think he makes his mind up too early rather than reading and reacting.

Exactly. He is progressing as a playmaker. These tough times are hopefully going to help mold him into a better playoff performer for us.

As much as we would like to live off of our offense, sometimes especially in the playoffs, running an offense just isn't feasible. We need somebody with that special ability to break down the other team through shear will, athleticism, and special talent.

Donovan is a special talent. Have faith everyone.

Still thought Donovan looked a little out of it, even during the AS game last night. Maybe the dude is just a bit worn out after all summer playing basketball. He’ll be good for sure! Noticed he’s already back in SLC. Hopefully he just rests, sometimes I actually worry Donovan over-works himself. Man should have just taken a few days and went some place warm and relaxed. I really do hope he’s just resting the rest of the week, he deserves it and I think it’d be great for him.

Locke made a comment in a recent podcast that Donovan has mentioned since being named an all star he hasn’t been having fun playing basketball. All the stuff that comes as expectations with stardom are likely starting to weigh on him.

Dog days of the season too... a break is good.

The problem with Donovan is that we haven't adapted to the new players. For most of the first half of the season, he has played amazing basketball. He earned his All Star status. However, the addition of Clarkson and return of Conley has disrupted his rhythm. It's obvious. He's a very good teammate and willing passer. Well, Conley and Clarkson are ball dominant not even mentioning how Ingles can run the offense and Bojan can put his head down determined to shoot. Donovan is deferring to these guys too much.

If we are going to be a contender, it's on Donovan. Right now, I feel like we are screwing with his upward momentum because we are all over the place with what offense we are trying to run. When we slump, it's because we don't keep our identity and people panic. That includes Donovan sometimes too. We go from one streaky scorer in Donovan to sometimes 4 or 5. It's illogical to think we are always going to know when to feed the hot hand. Mudiay caught fire for a bit last night, and then he cooled off yet we kept feeding him. He doesn't have the skills to maintain scoring at that rate for 20+ points regularly enough to abandon the offense on his behalf. Clarkson is the same way although he is a better scorer than Mudiay for sure.

If we keep taking the ball out of Donovan's hands, we're going to pay the price. We aren't going to be a legit contender. Guys like Harden, Lillard, Westbrook, and many other elite scoring wings were relied on even in tough times early in their careers. They became elite because they were allowed to figure it out. We aren't letting Donovan figure it out when we throw him in a corner and abandon him for a guy who can't maintain scoring as well as he has shown in his still just 2.5 years in the league.
