The “I’m afraid” section appears to have plenty of nuance that you haven’t considered. Let human complexity wash over you a little, brother.
You also make some assumptions regarding “softness” and the position I’m finding myself in. It may not be softness at all. If I ultimately decide to walk away from this toward what I deem to be more interesting and rewarding questions and problems, then it will—in actual truth—be difficult to do. The softer choice, at that point, would be to stay in the same place out of habit, or to rationalize that Jazz-related questions and problems were an adequate use of my brain space for the roughly hour or two I gave them per day.
