What's new

Rudy has Covid 19

testing is expensive as hell here. I’m hearing accounts of $500-$600 with insurance and $1,500+ without.

and that’s if you meet the criteria of:

recently traveled abroad and/or been in contact with someone who has been confirmed sick with it.

ridiculous. Soooooo many more people are sick with this thing.
At those prices I know I won't ever get tested voluntarily

Sorry I have trouble feeling bad for Rudy after his douchy rubbing of the microphones.
Even if he doesn’t die I read that the severe cases can have long recoveries and have long term effects on lungs... which given his profession would be not good. Hope like hell he and the other team personnel are healthy. This **** is scary and people taking it lightly very well may end up feeling as dumb as Rudy dies for the mic joke.

The odds of his contracting it from those microphones is like a million to one. Which means it's probably much more prevalent in the NBA as well as the general population than anyone realizes.

He was already feeling better. He wanted to play tonight. Everyone knows when you get a flu the first part is the worst, the stuffy nose and sore throats are just annoying.

I’d wager the amount of minor cases is significant and you have to look at the underlying reason Rudy was tested was because of technicalities and not because of medical necessity, evidenced from him being ready to go if it was negative.

There’s a bit of a selection bias of tests are being reserved for those with high suspicion of having the virus — you’ll expect a higher proportion of positive tests than if you’re randomly testing people. People like Rudy and Tom Hanks are found positive not because the virus has a predisposition for the rich and famous, but because they’re rich and famous they’re being tested.

tl;dr this is already here, and because the scarcity of tests, only those with high suspicion are getting tested.

tl;dr x2 lots of mild cases out there that aren’t reaching the level triggering testing.

Yesterday, only 8 people were tested for corona:

Rudy being positive for corona isn’t really the problem. Lots of people out there with it, Rudy just happened to have the backing of the league office of a top 3 national sport, so he got tested with mild symptoms.

We are currently testing over 100 people a day at work, there are 3 other similar clinics in Melbourne. With more to open around the country.

The broader economic consequences could be huge. Im likely going to have to close my bar for a period of time, still have to find 2k a week to pay the rent while we're not trading. Not a massive problem for us but other businesses in the sector who can't afford to shut for 1 or 2 months will likely go to the wall.

Why did you have to say "dies for the mic" doe?

It sounds to me there are actually two tests. One local test that is fast, another test that is sent to CDC for confirmation and/or further study.

Rudy was tested in the lockerroom or hotel. Then a test sent to CDC?
