Coronavirus

This ain't going to magically get better in 2.5 weeks. You'll see some states improve while others will get worse.

Governors will ultimately decide what's best for them anyway. Telling people to do whatever they want for Easter means we'll see a huge increase at the end of April and prolong this madness.

As someone not from the US and with no dog in your internal political fights, I am baffled by the response of Trump and even more baffled there are people defending his actions. WTF is happening?

It looks like Trump's doing pretty well. Especially for how unprecedented this pandemic is. I have no doubt that Biden or Sanders would have been a complete disaster during this crisis.

We've gone to a 6 month shut down here and i think we're doing a much better job of managing this than you guys. But look you've got a point, its also about how much you value human life as a society.

I'm curious:

You in Australia?

When did the 6 month shut down start and when does it end?

You realize the US just in the beginning of the curve, right? There is no overloading of the hospitals... yet. NY is projecting to hit the peak in 2-3 weeks. Then others will follow. Do you think this just will magically pass you by? Especially if you relax the measures for Easter... cuz... you know... people need to go to church for Easter and all... This is ludicrous.

The question is more about if we should shut down driving for 40k lives. Now, I’m not suggesting that “lol 40k lives, who cares, lol,” but the fact that it would be a legitimate solution and it’s a question we haven’t asked, and one we’re comfortable not asking and ignoring because we wouldn’t want to live with the inconvenience it would cause to daily life.

Question is what can we do regarding public policy: make safer cars, lower speed limits, driver training, revoke licenses.

There is no decision point where one person driving or not driving can overwhelm a system and cause deaths to others, as will be happening in our hospitals over the next month.

So it is apples and oranges

I did not say any of that BS. This is unprecedented. We have 5x the population of Italy so the numbers must take that into consideration. The President hopes the country can get moving again by Easter and will consult his medical consultants to see what can be done.

I would also add that New York has been a disaster with people partying in the streets as recently as last week and the spread of the disease there will be their own fault.

I think you have a units problem 10 per capita would be ~4 billion respirators and one for every citizen with nine left over.
Per capita is measurement meaning per 100 000 people. You have 35 respirators per 100000 people.

Article from a day ago:

US was more prepared for pandemic than any other country, Johns Hopkins study found
https://www.foxnews.com/politics/us...r-pandemics-johns-hopkins-study-found-in-2019

I can see why you are so negative and confused too. 99% of the coverage for the virus is negative. You can barely find any truthful/balanced articles on google right now.
This was from a 2019 study about a possible pandemic. Reality has shown that several other countries have handled it better than the USA.

We might have done better if our federal government had made decisions based on science and caring about people instead of reelection and stock market fears.
