Ron Mexico's write-up

I have 3 elite defenders starting to go with Dirk and a solid defender in DWill. Bill Walton will come off the bench to defend Shaq if he becomes a problem, Walton can body up Shaq pretty well. Shaq will be a beast on offense but on defense he will be a huge liability. He cant keep up with anyone on my team and will wear him out chasing players around. Prime Dirk is a huge issue to deal with. Plus we will put shaq in the pick and roll every chance. As far as the other positions go I have a pretty big advantage. Giannis will take care of Durant. Drexler and Butler are a huge advantage. As far as benches go I have a great mixture. I have a beast in Glen rice that can make it rain from 3 and one of the best shooters of all time Dale Ellis. Bob Pettit was the greatest PF when he retired and put up huge numbers. Including 50 points in the closing game of the finals against one of the best teams of all time.

Honestly Spy's team has so many head cases it would be hard for them to come together. This is a pretty toxic team Rondo, Hayward, Ron Artest, Lamar Odom, Bowen...

Starting Rondo, Artest, and Lewis in an all time tourney is death. Not even Shaq can make up for that.

I think you can make a case for Artest. Maybe even Lewis if the need for a stretch 4 is just that important and the rest of the roster is stacked. But couldn’t Durant just have been that?

Finally: Rondo is trash. I’m sympathetic to Spycam cuz he’s a great poster and usually is a step ahead of everyone on these things but I know that shouldn’t influence my voting.

Also; I would be wary of selecting Dirk in a contest like this, and I don’t think in most cases you can consider him a center. But interchangeable next to Giannis? Sure. That’s ****ing bad ***.

Then again... who the **** is guarding Shaq?

Super tough for me. Shaq would destroy Dirk and presumably Giannis if Ron tried throwing the latter on him. On the other hand, Shaq couldn’t guard Dirk. But I think you could maybe try Shaq on Giannis who isn’t a great shooter and throw Lewis on Dirk. I don’t know. That probably wouldn’t be effective either.

I think I lean spy because I think he’d basically be impossible to stop. Giannis or Dirk would likely get into foul trouble. And Shaq was a very good passer who’d have three really good shooters one of whom is a legit stud in Durant. Plus Dirk and Deron sort of suck defensively. Shaq was average I’d say. Maybe slightly above but everyone else there is pretty damn good or great.

Spy has more championship experience too I think. 6 guys who’ve won it all. Ron has just four.

I’m worried about Durant stealing Shaw’s thunder the way he dominates the ball but as I’m writing this I remember Kobe played with Shaq, and that worked after a few years, thoughts? I’m stumped on who to vote. I need help. You two idiots need to work for my vote.

Shaq is an issue for Dirk and Giannis to guard. But if the matchup is hurting me more than helping it's easy enough to throw Walton on to him.

WTH is Walton going to do? Lol
I dont know but I think a NBA MVP and finals MVP who was the rebounding champ (14.4) and blocks champ (3.2) could do okay for a bit. Shaqs strength and size is hard for anyone to handle, including a skinny Walton, but Walton had good length and was a great shot blocker.

"Bill Walton is the best player for a big man who ever played the game of basketball." Opposing team coach Philadelphia 76ers Coach Gene Shue said after Walton won the finals MVP.

What a great finals win that was against the all-star studded 76ers lead by Dr J. Walton had 15.2 Rpg and his passing abilities were amazing.

Injuries really hampered his career but he was amazing in his peak.

No one is stopping Shaq. But Shaq was awful on defense and his FT shooting really hurt in tight games. Having to guard elite offensive players and being put in tough pick and roll situations would really hurt him a lot and wear him out. Plus I have really great help defenders to bother Shaq.

Walton was going up against some pretty good bigs at the time and holding his own. He beat prime Kareem in a series sweep and played pretty well. He beat out Kareem for the MVP at his peak. He also had the best defensive rating by a lot his MVP year. That was 89.5 which is amazing for that time and now. This years best was Giannis at 96.3. All time best defensive rating was 87.4 by Ben Wallace. Waltons was top 10 all-time. He also lead the NBA that year in defensive box +/- at 3.7, which is a top 25 performance all-time.

Giannis > Durant

In this matchup I have 3 elite wing defenders starting to throw at Durant as well. Butler, Giannis, and Clyde Drexler. Having those positions match up against Rashard, Metta, and Durant is a run away for me. Plus DWill >> Rondo.

Yes, Shaq is better than Dirk but not by a lot. Dirk was amazing.
