Jazz sign Hassan Whiteside

Funny that Blancote has arrived.

As a player, honestly he’s not that bad. He is a legitimate force at the rim on both ends. He just has to stay there.

I think he’s a better basketball player than Favors fwiw.

Our backup center really isn't the problem. They were just victimized by the fact that our guards couldn't stay in front of their guys and our forwards couldn't secure the defensive boards behind when the center left the painted area to help cover defense. Whiteside is alright but we still need a big wing defender who could rebound at the 4 spot.

I think the signing of gay and Whiteside go well together coming off the bench because gay can add offense as well as being a decent defender with Whiteside being a dominant defensive player

Less offense than Favs but more defense. Especially with Rudy off the floor.

Whiteside is a better offensive player than Favs if he’s not doing post up BS. Favors looked like a corpse last year. He was really good just a year ago playing with the Blazers.

The Jazz are fully committed to a style and philosophy of play that is hugely benefited from rim protection. Evidently that is not changing. It is why the Favs pick up made a lot of sense to me but clearly Favs was not his old self and it was a bad move.

This feels like an Ed Davis/Jeff Green signing.

I was also hoping that having a backup center whose entire job wasn’t to cover for the perimeter’s lazy defense might incentivize anyone besides Royce to build some good habits.

Would prefer Kaminsky. We could do worse though. I’m just tired of our stagnant, lazy, regular season mentality. Guys like Rudy and Whiteside get played off the court (or should be) way too frequently in the playoffs.

Lol Whitesides stinks on D. Blocking shots and defense aren’t the same thing.

“ask his coach to put him in at the end of the game”

I don’t think that’s really the case, though. Favors is a fine player, but he’s not the same type of player as Rudy at all and he’s not really a rim protector. This was obscured in the past because we played with the super lineup that had a lot of defensive advantages. I always advocated Udoh because he’s the type of player we need, but people got so lost on Favors being an all-around better player that they lost sight of what we need from that spot, or at least assumed he was a better rim protector because he was all-around better.

Regarding Whiteside, I know there’s a lot of argument that he doesn’t really protect the rim. I haven’t really watched him play to know one way or the other, but he grabs a lot of rebounds. If we can channel some of this stuff then he should be perfectly fine for a bench role.
