What's new

Sam Cassell

I didn’t realize Bobby Sura was that old. I remember his name would occasionally come up as a “shooter” when we (as fans, never the FO, apparently) we’re on the hunt for someone to fill the huge shooting void Hornacek left when he retired. It always baffled me because his shooting numbers always sucked. Not sure if being a white guard made people think he must be a shooter, but the numbers never showed that.
Time does fly as you get older.

He was the Matty Ice of his day.

Certainly better than Mark Jackson.
According to Andrew Bogut, he from the penal colonies, Mark A. Jackson has a propensity to elevate arguments from design, inflationary metaphysics, and related religiosity in the locker room. This may be detrimental to a multicultural, multi-philosophical team. Unity: It can be achieved through collective effervescence centered on Jazz symbols and related objects.

The Kings didn't want him as a coach. Nuff said.

Does the fact that we keep adding names to our interview list mean we don't like anyone we've interviewed so far or are we just trying to do a bunch of people favors?
Obfuscation

Agreed that he seems like a guy who wont take guff which seems like something we need. However, I dont recall him having a high basketball IQ as a player
I am beginning to hate the IQ talk to describe players. Feel or awareness seems more apt. Also the skill level and athleticism affect it a lot. Like I have seen Gobert direct offense and point players to their spot but he isn't considered high IQ player offensively because he doesn't have the touch or skills to make it more than a gimmick. Similarly, I have seen Jokic bust up plays before they even developed but he isn't athletic enough to be a consistent defensive factor.

About Sam Cassell, I don't think he had any issues understanding the game but I have heard his leadership was key to the teams he was on.

I wouldn't mind Jensen or Cassell.

I wonder if either possesses the Jazz-elusive skill of knowing how to sub players in and out at the right time?

Good point but still disagree. He had key roles that fit with specific teams in specific situations but IMO his decision making was frequently questionable. Not unique to Sam.
He's held his job security as an assistant for 10+ years from his experience, so there's that.

And yikes. I hate your/you're autocorrect on a smart phone lmao. I fixed it on the original post.

I consider this to be a serious development in the head coaching search saga. Danny Ainge is an old school relationship kind of guy or at least that’s my take, and he has some history with Cassell from his time as General Manager in Boston. Cassell played on that 2007/2008 Championship team with Doc Rivers as his coach. I feel also that Ainge’s relationship with Doc Rivers paired with Rivers’ loyalty to Cassell spanning years in LA and Philly together is also a huge plus. As indicated elsewhere I would endorse it as I have the utmost respect for Cassell.

That being said, I find the potential situation a bit problematic. First off, it would probably be the end of Alex Jensen in a coaching capacity for the Jazz. Politically speaking, Cassell would be a fool to retain him with his experience and rapport with players, staff and fans IMO. Secondly, I believe there are subliminal racial issues that need to be addressed before the Jazz hire another black man to a head coaching capacity. I mean did we talk derisively about Snyder’s BBIQ at Duke when he was being considered? Did we post hugely popular unflattering pictures comparing him to an ape? That second antic particularly, if discovered will get you suspended or even expelled in any American school district.

Folks, I really think that we’re better than this, and if we aren’t we better learn to be if as representatives of this community we hope to give our next head coach his best chance of success moving forward. Or if it’s a non factor with another candidate we need to address our own preconceptions to become better human beings. (I’m from your community and went through a bad patch at one point in my life where I even used racial epithets.)

Gets off soapbox dons flame retardant suit.
