Quotes on the Donovan Mitchell Trade

This hurts the Knicks’ chances of getting Donovan Mitchell

My initial thought is that Utah is relying on Donovan Mitchell possibly leaving Cleveland in 3 years. For right now, this is a home run trade for Cleveland.

Unless Don is willing to sign the max extension in 2 yrs in Clev there's a fair chance hes back on the market in 2024

Pick swaps are overrated but if those unprotected picks are late enough they could be really good

Cleveland needed a number 1 for the playoffs and Mitchell gives them that. I think it’s a good trade

Mitchell in the east is pretty crazy

Call me salty, but the national perspective on the two trades of Mitchell and Gobert has me spinning.

3 years age difference, Gobert is a better player right now, asset packages are similar enough.

Mitchell deal = steal for Cleveland

Gobert deal = biggest overpay in history

Edit: I can’t do math

Overpaid AF. Kinda sick to my stomach being a cavs fan. We had a poor man’s Mitchell in sexton and we gave up the house.

Both are overpay as far as I am concerned but I am not criticizing either move because from the Wolves and Cavs point of view those moves are worth trying. A three times DPOY and a walking 25 ppg who is only 25 years old. With both respective team it's great

If it helps, I think the Gobert trade for y'all was a good trade for you and the Mitchell trade is a bad trade. I am higher on Gobert than most here and lower on Mitchell than most here. I think at least for the regular season the wolves will be pushing for the top seed in the west and I plan to stream a ton of their games as they will likely be for me the most entertaining team outside of my Denver Nuggets.

In total, here’s what the Jazz received for Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell this offseason:

7 first-round picks
3 pick swaps
Collin Sexton
Lauri Markkanen
Ochai Agbaji
Jarred Vanderbilt
Leandro Bolmaro
Walker Kessler
Talen Horton-Tucker
Malik Beasley
Stanley Johnson

They acquired an entire team of NBA players and an entire team of middle schoolers.

Danny Ainge is the goat

Danny ainge is a monster he different

Jazz championship this season easy

OKC and Utah about unload for Wemby

Back court defense is horrible but I guess it doesn’t matter much when you can just funnel guys into Allen and Mobley.

I think the jazz lowkey won

Crazy to think out of the Celtics, Bucks, 76ers, Heat, Raptors, Cavs, Hawks, Nets and Bulls one of them won't make the playoffs.

Literally every one of those teams has an argument to be made for winning over 50+ games

Presuming they go with a lineup of Garland-Mitchell-Okoro-Mobley-Allen, the Cavs' entire starting 5 is under the age of 25 and under contract through 2024.

gobert defense force was talking about how mitchell would get 'exposed' without gobert as an anchor, and then he gets traded to a team with mobley and allen LMAO

So what’s a Utah lineup looking like post firesale? Run Sexton at the one?

Damn.

Utah has pulled enough talent back in through the trades to legit compensate for what they've lost, and have the draft picks to keep stocking up over the next few years.

Mike Goneley

Bojan Boggoneovich

Jordan Clarksgone

Its weird. Because they actually still have an alright team, which means tanking won’t work great. But also don’t have a good enough roster to even be in the play-ins. They’re mediocre.

I can see Utah now making moves to get off guys like Conley and Bog

Watch out for a Bogdonavic & Beasley or Clarkson for Westbrook and LAs ‘27 and ‘29 picks, hopefully unprotected for Utah.

bruh mormons NEVER use protection

Wow jazz really bagged 10 FRP's for Gobert and Mitchell

The Cavs main 4 are all locked up for at least 3 years, Okoro 2 years. Keeping their 2023 and 2024 picks allows them to add depth before they have to spend on the core guys. Massive move

People don’t seem to realize this because they just see a bunch of picks. The way they’re setup with these contracts and the pick swaps coming later is why it’s such a good trade.

Ainge knows what he’s doing. He specifically asked for later year picks so if the Cavs crumble he will have great first round picks for multiple years. Same thing he did in Boston with the Nets trade.

This is literally what Ainge did with the Celtics. I’m not saying he invented it but seeing how well it worked for him and the Celtics it definitely popularized it so calm down dude.

Mitchell Could leave right when the second pick conveys. And they have no other assets to improve with now. They wont even get their own FRP this year either.

This is interesting. They certainly wouldn't have done it if they didn't have their core locked in.

The tankest of tanking tanks

utah got an absolute ****in haul this offseason

Now they milk Lakers for those 2 picks

The lakers basically paid this same price for AD who is a top 10 player when healthy. Damn inflation really hittin the league too…

That's a haul, folks

Can’t believe Rudy went for so much still

Both packages are basically the same value. Depends on how you value Gobert vs Mitchel

8th?! How? The Knicks picks offered were for 23 and 25. You have to expect they'd be pretty damn good during that time. The other picks were Milwaukee and Dallas in 23. Again, weak picks.

The Cavs picks are 25, 27, and 29, and include swaps in the intervening years. Yes the Cavs will be good, but will they be good for that long? The Jazz drafted Mitchell 5 years ago, and went through their full arc in that time period.

If the Cavs under-perform, guys start looking to play elsewhere. And you need to trade off them, rather than risk them leaving for nothing...

It makes sense to me why they'd rather have this package.

If the Knicks would've offered picks/swaps 4-6 years away I think they could've gotten the deal done, but all the picks they offered were nearly guaranteed to be pretty bad. And that's also with really no notable players coming back from the Knicks, just dead salary.

Mitchell still doesn’t have an all NBA and gets treated like a star cause he jumps high and shoots a lot

People want to be first to declare a winner of every trade. I agree that this one's fine and both teams got what they wanted out of it.

Half this thread is going to say that’s too much and the other half will say it’s a steal. Opinions on Mitchell in this sub are very divided.

Sexton gonna ball out in Utah

So lets call the picks even. Knicks and Cavs both had 3 unprotected and 2 swaps.

You're telling me that you'd rather have Markkanen, Sexton, and Agbaji than two of Obi/Grimes/IQ?

That actually makes sense and is a better offer. GG Jazz.

Mitchell is not a 5 pick player but they got that. Now will Danny Ainge actually use all these picks this time around lets see

Bold of you to assume the Cavs (or any team really) will be good in 5 years.

3 unprotected and 2 swaps? That’s the next 5 years of the franchise gone. Only superstars cost that much

Yeah, but apparently Ainge wanted unprotected firsts - with CLE sending 3 unprotected picks and 2 swaps, there is the potential for 5 picks going to Utah. Plus Sexton is a way better player than anyone the Knicks could have offered

Utah about to make Colin change his name to Soakton or Sexnot.

Some of you are nuts, they got a haul

They got this years 14th pick

A 20 ppg guard

A floor spacing starting big

And 5 picks

Oh lord **** Utah

Holy **** the East is about to be a bloodbath this year.

Ainge with the fleece as always

So Cleveland has the best defensive frontcourt and worst defensive backcourt now?

This seems like a terrible trade for Cleveland. Basically 5 picks and 3 good players for a one dimensional guard that can't play defense doesn't make sense to me.

Steal for Utah (with 5 first rounders). Stupid Knicks not giving up enough

Ainge for 3 picks and 2 swaps, and the 14th pick from this draft I think he's sleeping just fine lol

Lmao Ainge robbed them big time

Brutal return for Utah wow

seems like Ainge valued Sexton the most? Because we could have sent this in picks

EDIT: Sexton is expiring and I doubt Utah extends him? Seems like this was because Ainge valued Clevelands picks over ours

EDIT: They extended him, Ainge values sexton obviously

Twin towers at the front with Mitchell and Garland is gonna be scary

WHATT?? What happened to the knicks?

Mitchell's going to need therapy for depression after living in Utah and now Cleveland.

Utah is the new OKC

Wow out of no where

NO ONE UNDERSTAND WHY THIS HAPPENED, BUT IT'S HYPE

Gonovan Mitchell

Man really went from Utah to Cleveland. Fun times lol

Draft picks are meaningless in todays NBA Lmao

It’s going to be wild when the entire first round of the draft is OKC, Houston, and Utah taking turns.

Goddamn Danny you ****ing legend

THAT’S IT?!?! Someone post the suicide hotline for Knicks fans

This trade is crazy because even with Donavan Mitchell Cleveland to me is at BEST the 5th best team in the east lol. But I guess the plan is have Mitchell lead them into the growth phase?

Idk man this feels risky

Imagine sending the proverbial troops to Utah recruiting Donovan to NYK for years, get into negotiations and on the last inch before the finish line you decide to play hardball. Big L for the Knicks front office. Donovan's going to win in CLE, anyways

Also a huge LUL to New York media and the general NBA media for running down the street naked screaming all offseason and even longer trying to get Donovan to the knicks. Suck your narrative nerds

Cavs shouldn’t give up so much to try to make playoffs. They need assets when Allen, Mobley and Garland start to enter their prime

Utah won this trade without doubts.

Terrible, TERRIBLE trade for Cleveland. How is a backcourt of Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland going to even work....

Danny Ainge is on GM Mode, bruh

Utah is cashing out this offseason. They're going to have like 5 first overall picks just in the 2023 draft

In 2020-21 Sexton scored 24 PPG on .571 TS%

In 2020-21, Mitchell scored 26 PPG on .570 TS%.

Interesting choice by Cleveland to not develop Sexton and keep their roster.

Mitchell on the cavs makes way more sense than him on knicks

This is more like ****TheKnicks from Ainge

So the Jazz trade a 6'1 shooting guard who in his 22-year-old season averaged 24/4/4 on 43/36/81 splits and plays mediocre defense, and get a 6'1 shooting guard who in his 22-year-old season averaged 24/4/3 on 48/37/82 splits and plays mediocre defense, AND a haul of picks/swaps and a really solid young 7'0 stretch-4??

How does this make sense for the Cavs lol.

My favorite drug is Knicks fans suffering, and I’m high as **** right now

“This is more like ****TheKnicks from Ainge.”

After waiting all Summer for the Jazz and Knicks to hammer something out and then have this surprise two days after the Barret extension - don’t F with the DA!

Back court defense is horrible but I guess it doesn’t matter much when you can just funnel guys into Allen and Mobley.
Well they aren't the defenders that Gobert is, and we saw how that worked with a true generational defensive talent, so.....good luck with that plan Cavs!

Funny way to look at it. We traded 2 guys for essentially nearly 2 full teams worth of players and picks. Crazy!

Mike Goneley

Bojan Boggoneovich

Jordan Clarksgone

We can only hope!

Oh and LOL that's funny right there.

bruh mormons NEVER use protection

It was why we valued Mitchell so much, we aren't worried about defense.

Sexton gonna ball out in Utah

I am afraid of this.
