I like Lee kind of… but Detroit gave us cash considerations equal to Lee’s salary… so that tells me he isn’t a sweetener but an add in. They will likely look at him through camp and if he plays well he may not get cut but as of right now I think he’s #1 on the chopping block.
Point guard is a position of need, I think he stays UNLESS he sucks eggs in camp.

Jazz have to give Udoka one more year to show if he's worth keeping
This is his final year under contact

Surprised you guys reckon they'll move on from Butler so quickly, that said he hardly set the world on fire last year.
He lacks quickness and explosion and can’t generate his own shot. Man closest to the door IMO.

Said it in another thread: Butler, NAW and Johnson. Love to see the Jazz bite the $ bullet and waive Gay to save either NAW or Johnson though.

i'd even take forrest over bolmaro. at least forrest got perimeter D that translates. none of bolmaro's skills translate to the NBA. waive bolmaro and bring back forrest

Ken Clayton mentioned on twitter that the Jazz will have to decide in 5 weeks whether or not to guarantee Dok's 4th year, and if they do it would give him an 80% pay increase. I think they end up waiving him along will Johnson and then whoever has the better training camp between Butler and Lee gets the final roster spot and the other guy gets waived.

On a completely unrelated note, I hate when you can't see who voted for what in these polls. I forget to check the little box when I made the poll, and it wouldn't let me edit it after.

It will be whoever it's cheapest to waive, since the contracts stay on the books. I'm guessing Butler, Johnson, Lee.

Cheapest to move on from, assuming no trades.

If they stay on the books then why does being the cheapest matter?

Yeah, I've never understood this idea that you cut the cheapest contract. You still end up paying the same salaries regardless. Just keep the players you prefer to keep.

Why would we have been so eager to get/cut Westbrook if we're shying away from cutting Gay because his contract is bigger than someone else's on the team?

(And yet I keep seeing things on Twitter and elsewhere that seem to suggest that maybe owners don't think this way -- that cutting a larger salary is somehow more painful to them than cutting a smaller salary. ... I don't get it.)

At least one of Lee and Butler will most likely get cut. Both have contracts that expire after this season.
Stanley Johnson could be on the bubble. His contract is only partially guaranteed.
I'm sure the Jazz would *love* to unload Rudy Gay, but he'll probably hang around as a throw-in for a future trade.

Funny how we all went from being so excited about Butler before the season last year to thinking there's a good chance he gets cut this year. Even the media was really high on him last year, I remember the press conference with Quin during pre-season when he snapped at the reporters and said that so far, they'd asked him twice as many questions about Butler as they had about Rudy and Donovan combined.

I'm curious what kind of player you think Bolmaro is. I've been under the impression that his perimeter defense is his calling card at this point.
Bolmaro’s defense BPM was -0.7 last season. Forrest by comparison is +1.2.

bolmaro is jack of all trades expert at none type of guy. OK at a lot of things but not really good at anything.

He could become the MVP of European league or Chinese league one day. But at the NBA he simply has zero skill that would translate

At this point, who wants Gay as a throw in? I mean, I can see the theory. But he has negative value with his contract, and that seems unlikely to change. What kind of deal opens up for us with Gay that is unavailable without? I'm having a hard time thinking of realistic scenarios.

That’s an interesting observation and why this season though flagged as a “no contest” is going to be so interesting (for nerds like me anyway). What in the hell did we have to be excited about preseason last year? We had two journeymen signings in Gay and Whiteside and a second rounder that had won the MVP in his team’s championship game. As fans I think we all clamored around Butler because what the hell else did we have to be excited about? How did management think that that collection of misfits could move the needle for us. Whereas, any of Fontechio, Beasley, Vando even THT would have been a welcome addition and we haven’t even addressed our new potential double digit earning Stars.

After a massively underwhelming summer league campaign, that's what you get.

Quin was right.

Forrest is a better prospect than Butler and now he has a pretty decent chance of making the Hawks final roster.

Sometimes an utility guy who only specializes in just one or two things is much more desirable than supposedly the “star prospect” who does everything for his team in lower competitions. When they go to NBA and find out they aren't “the guy” any more, then guess what? Most of them will struggle mightily.

Please don't tell me you're trusting BPM as the arbiter of defense between these two guys with limited playing time early in their careers.

(By the way, I was pro-Forrest, so I'm not trying to knock him. I'd have been happy for the Jazz to keep him, but given the circumstances, it was just not to be.)

I don't really know where the jack-of-all-trades kind of assessment for Bolmaro is coming from. I have him pegged very differently: very aggressive defender with lots of perimeter defensive potential (may need a bit of refinement, but he's only 22 with limited NBA experience); great potential guarding anyone from 1s - standard-sized wings. OK at playmaking (though I think his pre-draft reputation was higher here than I think he's shown yet). Severely lacking in scoring ability at the NBA level at this point (so becoming a non-NBA league MVP seems like a real stretch, since scoring often factors heavily into that award).

To get to the question of the OP:

I'd probably be inclined to cut Lee, Gay, and NAW/Butler (probably NAW since we have such a SG glut and Butler's a bit younger).

But I hope Hardy has no preconceptions going into the season and just ends keeping whoever he thinks is best for the team based on camp. There's a bunch of guys that are really close in my mind.

"potential" is the other word for "in development" i.e "not good enough". until bolmaro shows some stuff that is good enough for the NBA, he will struggle seeing the floor.

We got paid Lee’s entire salary this year from Detroit so I am guessing he likely gets cut.
