What's new

Uh oh, we lost a game and the tank birds are starting to chirp up again
Since I'm the only one who's posted anything that can remotely be interpreted in this light, I'll just say I'm definitely, definitely not a "tank bird." I'm sure I've had HH and Numberica fuming at me several times this offseason and early season with my posts about how ineffective tanking is as a general strategy.

Let's just take the ups and the downs in good humor this year. Whatever happens, we're in a great position this season.

Vandy is shooting 50% from 3. Just park him in the right side corner.

He's only taking one 3 a game though, and nobody is going to respect his shot enough to bother to guard him out there, which will continue to clog the paint like it did tonight when he was in the game.

There is no need for us to tank. However, the timberwolves and worst of nets/76ers/rockets pick could be useful under certain circumstances.

This is a game where it wasn't so bad that we lost since it keeps the Wizards ahead of the nets and 76ers. Basically so long as we beat the nets, 76ers, rockets and timberwolves, I don't mind if we drop a couple of games here or there experimenting or trying new things.

However, I'm not really a fan of going full tank mode and it would disappoint me if we did. Also playing well helps to increase the trade value of our guys if we need to move people.

I guess a loss was inevitable. I blame Vegas for making us 4 point favourites. We need to be the underdogs.

Jokes aside, even if this was more on our defense, I'm concerned for the lack of 4th quarter touches for the bigs. I dont know if its Hardy diverting from our system with his adjustments, but it looks to me like the guards are playing more hero ball late in games.

Stats also support that. JC averages more field goal attempts in the 4th (4.8) than Lauri (2.8) and KO (1.6) combined. He also hits 3s at a much lower rate (28.6%) in the 4th (over 40% in other quarters).

Lauri is the type of guy who we need to step up big in the 4th of these types of close games. He is phased out by either the opposing defense or by our guards. Either way, its slightly concerning.

As of Lauri, he still might have not gotten used to bigger role, and might be endurance issue. He is having bigger minutes, more inside presence and rebounding than last season, and still on the sf position, and the amount of games we have had to start the season is big load.

It might be possible he just is not up to carry the offense in the 4th, yet. If he is still having this kind of efg% like now, and we do not see him having more role in the 4th after a month or two, then it is very concerning.

Naah he needs to establish himself. He needs to be active and vocal so he looks and sounds like a guy who wants the ball.

In Chicago, Lavine kept freezing him in the 4th because despite being less talented he felt like he was the #1 guy and Lauri never fought back. In Cleveland he wasnt in the media-established "big 3", so he often parked himself in the corner in the 4th almost like "to not get in the way".

Its a culture thing. In Finland being quiet and confident is fine. The coach will make sure you get the ball. In NBA, everyone is confident. You need a voice with some swag to be a leader.

I hope he has learned that. But it wasnt the first or 2nd game he disappeared in the 4th.

Remember when a bunch of us were using +/- stats to argue that THT was terrible?

Well now, after 14 games, with a bigger sample size, you know who the worst +/- player for the Jazz is?:

Jarred Vanderbilt (and Rudy Gay is somehow second best in total +/- and tops in per possession +/-; and THT has moved into the top 5 per possession among rotation players).

(still way too small sample size to really say anything much; +/- stats are only sometimes valuable over even a whole season)
THT haters are the lamest group on here

Agreed.

Clarkson is obviously having a very good season but he is taking too many bad shots in the 4th quarter which seemed to happen with this team last season too. Hardy sat him against the Clippers down the stretch and they won a close game because other guys were getting involved.
